[Ab] Resumen:Noncoding RNAs have drawn significant attention in carcinogenesis. In this study, we identified a novel gene named nickel-related gene1 (NRG1) associated with nickel-induced cancer. By using rapid amplification of cDNA end PCR, we obtained the full length of the cDNA. The sequence was analyzed by using related bioinformatics software and comparative genomics methods. The results showed that NRG1 was located on chromosome 2q12, within intron2 of ADAMTS6, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs. And, NRG1 had a high level of homology (76 %) to rat LINE1 sequence RL1.3 (long interspersed middle repetitive DNA). What's more, there was no continuous open reading frame present in NRG1 sequence. Taken together, these data demonstrate that NRG1 is a novel noncoding RNA, and we predicted it may be a transposon-like gene. The identification of NRG1 emphasized the potential role of noncoding RNA in nickel carcinogenesis.

[Ab] Resumen:Fetal malignant tumors are rare. We present a case of intrauterine diagnosis of a diaphragmatic tumor presenting with fetal hydrops at 32 weeks' gestation. The sonographic findings were bilateral pleural effusion, ascites and skin edema. A large right-sided diaphragmatic tumor was identified. Owing to the findings on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging a solid malignant tumor was suspected. The pleural effusions were drained and malignant cells identified. Because of rapid tumor progression Cesarean section was performed and a hydropic female newborn was delivered at 34 + 0 weeks' gestation. There was no sign of metastatic disease. Postnatally tumor biopsy revealed an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Therapy included chemotherapy and secondary surgical intervention. After a good primary response with complete remission after 6 months, the rhabdomyosarcoma relapsed at 12 months with cerebral metastasis. The prognosis was poor.

[Ab] Resumen:A 29-year-old man presented to his local orthopaedic service with a mass in the medial aspect of his left thigh, present for 1 year. It had not changed in size, although he complained of increasing tightness in the region. He denied any systemic symptoms or history of local trauma. Extensive imaging performed at his local hospital was thought suggestive of a musculoskeletal tumour. The patient was referred to our tertiary centre musculoskeletal tumour clinic. Review of external imaging and further investigations revealed a fluid-filled intramuscular mass containing an echogenic focus consistent with foreign body. Ultrasound-guided aspiration yielded fluid which grew Staphylococcus aureus. Only when presented with this information did the patient vaguely recall sitting on a wooden kebab stick 30 months previously. At surgery, a thick-walled abscess with a central foreign body was identified and drained. At follow-up 1 month later, he was well with no recurrent problems.

[Ab] Resumen:Primary skeletal muscle lymphoma accounts for <1% of all lymphomas; a fraction of these arise within the abdominal muscles. Here, we describe the case of an 84-year-old woman who presented with multiple painful abdominal masses that proved to be diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and we discuss the main features of the disease. Clinical differential diagnosis from soft tissue sarcoma can be extremely difficult. Therefore, accurate pathological diagnosis including optimal tissue processing and immunohistochemical staining is vital to ensuring proper treatment.

[Ab] Resumen:BACKGROUND: MRI is the diagnostic mainstay for detection and differentiation of musculoskeletal tumors. However, a projection regarding the biological dignity of lesions based on standard MRI sequences remains difficult and uncertain. This study was undertaken to analyse whether diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) can distinguish between benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumorous and tumor-like lesions in pediatric patients. METHODS: MR examinations of 44 consecutive pediatric patients (26 girls, mean age 11±6 years) including standard sequences and DWI (b=50/800 s/mm(2)) at 1.5 or 3 Tesla were retrospectively evaluated. The study group contained 10 patients with non-treated malignant tumors and 34 patients with benign lesions. Size, relative signal intensity and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC, unit ×10(-3) mm(2)/s) were determined in one lesion per patient. RESULTS: Mean ADC was 0.78±0.45×10(-3) mm(2)/s in patients with malignant tumors and 1.71±0.75 ×10(-3) mm(2)/s in patients with benign lesions (P<0.001). Relative operating characteristics (ROC) analysis showed a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 91% for malignancy, based on an ADC cut-off value of ≤1.03. On logistic regression, mean ADC and lesion size accounted for 62% of variability in benign vs. malignant tumors. For malignant tumors, the signal intensity ratio was higher on DWI than on T1w post-contrast images (P<0.002). Two cases of local tumor recurrence were diagnosed by DWI only. CONCLUSIONS: DWI shows promising results for determination of biological dignity in musculoskeletal tumors. Mean ADC ≤1.03×10(-3) mm(2)/s is a strong indicator of malignancy at the first diagnosis. The use of DWI for early diagnosis of tumor recurrence in comparison with standard MRI sequences should be evaluated in prospective studies.

[Ab] Resumen:Lipoma is the most common type of benign soft tissue tumor. However, lipoma containing bone or cartilage is very rare, especially a tumor containing both of these components. We encountered a 59-year-old woman who had a benign lipoma of the infraspinatus muscle that contained both osseous and chondral components. Histopathological examination revealed the presence of chondral and osseous elements mixed with mature adipose tissue. To the best of our knowledge, there has never been a report of benign lipoma containing osteochondral tissue at this location. Therefore, we report the first case of an axillary lipoma with bone and cartilage components. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE V: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.

[Ab] Resumen:Tumoral calcinosis, a rare benign clinical condition resembling a neoplasm, is characterized by calcium deposits, usually located in the soft tissues around the large joints. It can be primary or secondary to renal failure and hyperparathyroidism. This report describes an unusual case of recurrent tumoral calcinosis presenting as a huge mass infiltrating the skin and muscles of the lumbosacral area. The patient underwent wide excision and reconstruction with bilateral V-Y advancement gluteal fasciocutaneous flaps and at this writing remains disease free 4 years postoperatively. A concise review of the pertinent literature focusing on the diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive measures also is reported. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE V: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.

[Ab] Resumen:This report describes a 31-year-old woman with a 23-year history of a right buttock mass that was otherwise asymptomatic, but was proven to be a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (a fully malignant soft tissue tumour with a potential for distant metastasis). This case illustrates that a long-standing tumour does not necessarily imply a benign pathology. A vigilant approach should be taken for any tumours that are of significant size (larger than 5 cm).

[Ab] Resumen:The diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer is in 50% of the cases not made until the metastatic stage. Distant metastases commonly involve the adrenal glands, the liver, the bones and the central nervous system. Metastases are very rarely seen in skeletal muscles. We report a case with a 47-year-old man, who suffered from strong pain in his right shoulder. The symptoms turned out to be the initial presentation of a disseminated lung cancer. A magnetic resonance scan showed skeletal muscle metastases to m. subscapularis and m. infraspinatus. Metastases to skeletal muscles are rare but should be kept in mind as part of the differential diagnosis in cases where atypical shoulder pain is the only symptom.
