[Ab] Abstract:BACKGROUND: Percutaneous testing (PT) is preferred to intradermal testing in humans for the in vivo identification of allergen hypersensitivity, but the methodology has not been well described for use in dogs with atopic dermatitis. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To identify the irritant threshold concentrations (ITC) of eight aeroallergens using a commercial prick test device in normal dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty healthy, privately owned dogs. METHODS: Percutaneous testing was performed using the GREER Pick System (Stallergenes Greer; Lenoir, NC, USA). Five dilutions of glycerinated extracts of Bromis inermis, Sorghum halepense, Chenopodium album, Ambrosia psilostachya, Salix nigra and Acer negundo, as well as four dilutions of Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus were included. Glycerinated histamine (6 mg/ml) and glycerin/Coca's solution were used for the positive and negative controls, respectively. Orthogonal wheal diameters were measured for each test site every 5 min for 25 min. Reactions were considered significant when the average wheal diameter was equal to or greater than the mean of the positive and negative controls. RESULTS: Significant reactions were noted in five of 20 (25%) of dogs. The ITC (≤10% of dogs reacting) were 1:20 w/v for B. inermis and S. nigra, 1:400 w/v for D. farinae and 1:200 w/v for D. pteronyssinus. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: These results suggest that the pollen allergens evaluated in this study can be used for PT at their undiluted concentration (1:20 w/v) with a reasonable assurance of few false positive reactions in dogs. Dust mites require dilution for testing at the ITC.

[Ab] Abstract:Cocaine is an alkaloid extracted from the leaves of the Erythroxylum coca plant that emerged in the 1970s as a fashionable drug among members of certain social backgrounds. Cocaine abuse is a problem of current interest, which is mostly hidden and under-diagnosed, but dramatically widespread among all socioeconomic strata, and with an incidence which is increasing at an alarming rate. There are 1.5 million cocaine consumers in the USA. In Spain, the prevalence of consumption among the population between 15 and 65 years-old is higher, reaching 3.1%. Because of this, it seems important to understand and recognize all the mucocutaneous manifestations of cocaine abuse which have been reported in the literature in order to clarify and help dermatologists in their daily practice. In this article, we describe the principal mucocutaneous manifestations of cocaine abuse and we review isolated case reports which have been published in the literature. Because the dermatologist may deal with an unknown problem as well as with an already well-known history of cocaine abuse, it seems logical to separate the mucocutaneous manifestations into those which are frequent and highly suggestive, such as those caused by vascular injury, damage to mucosal membranes, infectious diseases or neutrophilic dermatosis, especially when suffered by young people and in consonance with other systemic manifestations and, those which have been reported in the literature as isolated case reports. We also summarize the main aspects of its pathogeny, principal pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics, and diagnostic tools. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

[Ab] Abstract:BACKGROUND: The extent to which participants act to clinically verify research results is largely unknown. This study examined whether participants who received Lynch syndrome (LS)-related findings pursued researchers' recommendation to clinically verify results with testing performed by a CLIA-certified laboratory. METHODS: The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center site of the multinational Colon Cancer Family Registry offered non-CLIA individual genetic research results to select registry participants (cases and their enrolled relatives) from 2011 to 2013. Participants who elected to receive results were counseled on the importance of verifying results at a CLIA-certified laboratory. Twenty-six (76.5%) of the 34 participants who received genetic results completed 2- and 12-month postdisclosure surveys; 42.3% of these (11/26) participated in a semistructured follow-up interview. RESULTS: Within 12 months of result disclosure, only 4 (15.4%) of 26 participants reported having verified their results in a CLIA-certified laboratory; of these four cases, all research and clinical results were concordant. Reasons for pursuing clinical verification included acting on the recommendation of the research team and informing future clinical care. Those who did not verify results cited lack of insurance coverage and limited perceived personal benefit of clinical verification as reasons for inaction. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest researchers will need to address barriers to seeking clinical verification in order to ensure that the intended benefits of returning genetic research results are realized.

[Ab] Abstract:Crack is a central nervous system stimulant extracted from the Erythroxylum coca plant. It is considered the most potent and addictive form of cocaine, and its euphoric effects are attained within a few seconds after consumption. Alteration of biological markers of oxidative stress and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) could be related to the severity of crack withdrawal symptoms in patients undergoing rehabilitation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate if the crack consumption and the drug detoxification process during 14 days in hospitalization regime was able to modify the oxidative status and BDNF levels, in male crack-abstinent patients. The crack detoxification process increased the glutathione (GSH), total thiol content (GST), nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, and reduced the mean BDNF levels. Moreover, a positive correlation was found between the number of hospital admission days and SOD values and between the GST levels and crack-use time after 14 days of detoxification. Furthermore, a negative correlation between the frequency of crack use and NO levels on the first day of hospitalization was also found. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that crack consumption causes increased oxidative stress in drug users and that the detoxification process during 14 days was sufficient to improve oxidative parameters and antioxidant defenses of the patients, which could positively contribute to rehabilitation process. In addition, we also observed a great variability in the BDNF levels of the patients during the detoxification process, resulting in a reduction in the mean values of this neurotrophin.

[Ab] Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Aim of this investigation was to study the temperature-dependent in vitro enamel erosion of five acidic drinks and citric acid under controlled conditions in an artificial mouth. METHODS: The erosive potential of Orange juice, Coca-Cola Zero, Sprite Zero, two fruit teas and citric acid (control) was investigated on bovine enamel specimens at temperatures between 5 °C and 55 °C. The pH values and total calcium content of all test drinks were determined. Specimens were immersed into an artificial mouth to imitate physiological oral conditions for 60 h. Cyclic de- and re-mineralization was performed, imitating the intake of six drinks in six h followed by a six-hour remineralization phase, where only artificial saliva ran over the specimens. Total erosive enamel loss was determined by contact profilometry. Differences in substance loss at different temperatures were tested for statistical significance (p-values ≤ 0.05) by means of ANOVA. RESULTS: Rising liquid temperature did not result in a considerable change of pH. Highest substance loss was observed for citric acid (33.6 ±â€¯6 µm to 38.7 ±â€¯6 µm), while only little erosion was induced by fruit tea (0.8 ±â€¯1 µm to 5.9 ±â€¯1 µm). Rising liquid temperature did not result in significantly increased substance loss for citric acid, orange juice and Coca-Cola Zero. Sprite Zero and both fruit teas, however, caused significantly (p < 0.001) more enamel loss at elevated temperature. CONCLUSIONS: Not all investigated drinks showed a temperature-induced change in erosivity. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: For some erosive beverages it can be recommended to keep the consummation temperature as low as possible to decrease the risk of erosive tooth substance loss.

[Ab] Abstract:The predictive validity of various corpus-based frequency norms in first-language lexical processing has been intensively investigated in previous research, but less attention has been paid to this issue in second-language (L2) processing. To bridge the gap, in the present study we took English as a case in point and compared the predictive power of a large set of corpus-based frequency norms for the performance of an L2 English visual lexical decision task (LDT). Our results showed that, in general, the frequency norms from SUBTLEX-US and WorldLex-Blog tended to predict L2 performance better in reaction times, whereas the frequency norms from corpora with a mixture of written and spoken genres (CELEX, WorldLex-Blog, BNC, ANC, and COCA) tended to predict L2 accuracy better. Although replicated in both low- and high-proficiency L2 English learners, these patterns were not exactly the same as those found in LDT data from native English speakers. In addition, we only observed some limited advantages of the lemma frequency and contextual diversity measures over the wordform frequency measure in predicting L2 lexical processing. The results of the present study, especially the detailed comparisons among the different corpora, provide methodological implications for future L2 lexical research.

[Ab] Abstract:Food additives generally used in carbonated drinks, such as 4-methylimidazole (4MI), caffeine (Caf?), citric acid (CA), and aspartame (Apm), were measured by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) using nanometer-sized particles of iron oxide (Fe O NPs). The quantification of 4MI in Coca Cola (C-cola) was carried out. In order to improve the reproducibility of the peak intensities, Fe O NPs loaded on ZSM5 zeolite were used as the matrix for quantification. By using 2-ethylimidazole (2EI) as the internal standard, the amount of 4MI in C-cola was determined to range from 88 to 65 µg/355 mL. The results agree with the published value (approx. 72 µg/355 mL). It was found that MALDI using Fe O was applicable to the quantification of 4MI in C-cola.

[Ab] Abstract:A 65-year-old woman with a history of pylorus-preserving gastrectomy(PPG)for early gastric cancer visited our hospital because of vomiting. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large bezoar in the anastomotic site of the stomach. Because the bezoar was too large to be collected orally, the dissolution therapy with taking Coca-Cola®was continued. On the 3rd day after hospitalization, she felt acute abdominal pain with vomiting. Computed tomography revealed intestinal obstruction by a mass with air bubbles inside in the ileum. Emergency operation was performed under a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction due to the bezoar. The black brown bezoar sized 80×35×30mm was extracted through an ileotomy. The delayed gastric empty is considered to involve in the bezoar formation. Therefore, the appropriate education of diet and periodic endoscopic screening are necessary for patients with large amounts of gastric residues especially after PPG. In the dissolution therapy, physicians need to be careful of intestinal obstruction by a bezoar.
