[Ab] Abstract:This study investigated the effect of treatment of guar gum coating coupled with essential oils. Harvested unripe green mangoes (UGM) were preserved using edible coatings containing essential oils of Nigella sativa, Coriandrum sativum, Foeniculum vulgare and Laurus nobilis derived using two different solvents (methanol and ethanol) and stored at refrigeration temperature (10°C, 80-85% relative humidity). Physiological and biochemical parameters that assess the quality of fruits were determined. Microbiological analysis was also performed at the start and end of shelf life. Generally, it was observed that ethanolic essential oils supplemented coatings conferred a greater retention of fruit quality as compared to both controls. Bacterial counts were significantly reduced in fruits that were coated with ethanolic essential oil edible coatings. Secondly, the coatings supplemented with ethanolic and methanolic essential oils extended shelf life up to 24days whereas treated and untreated control decayed after 10 and 6days respectively (P<0.05). These results suggested the application of these edible coatings for preservation of unripe green mangoes during cold storage.

[Ab] Abstract:The wheat bug, Nysius huttoni L. is an endemic New Zealand pest. The seedlings of forage brassicas are highly susceptible to direct feeding damage by this insect, and this can reduce plant establishment. Prophylactic use of pesticides is the usual practice for N. huttoni management. These practices have been linked to environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, and pollinator population declines in brassicas and other crops. Habitat management of the bug utilizing potential trap crops can be a better option for its management. A series of choice, no-choice, and paired-choice tests were conducted in a controlled-temperature room to evaluate the pest's preferences on seedlings of eight plant species. Kale plants (Brassica oleracea) were used as a potentially susceptible control, and seven non-kale plants were compared with kale as potential trap-plant species. These were: Lobularia maritima (L.) Desvaux (alyssum), Triticum aestivum L. (wheat), Phacelia tanacetifolia Bentham (phacelia), Fagopyrum esculentum Moench (buckwheat), Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), Trifolium repens L. (white clover), and Medicago sativa L. (lucerne). In choice tests, wheat was the most suitable followed by alyssum, buckwheat, and phacelia, all significantly more favored than kale. In no-choice tests, alyssum was significantly more favored than kale and the other plant species except wheat and phacelia. First feeding damage was recorded on alyssum in both the above test conditions. For paired-choice tests including kale, wheat, and alyssum were significantly more suitable than brassica. These findings are important for developing agro-ecological management strategies. Alyssum followed by wheat were the most suitable trap plants for N. huttoni. These two plant species can be deployed in and around brassica fields either independently or as in a multiple trap-cropping system to reduce bug damage, minimizing or avoiding pesticides, and delivering a range of ecosystem services.

[Ab] Abstract:BACKGROUND: Dietary factors play a key role in the development as well as prevention of certain human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. Currently there has been an increase in global interest to identify medicinal plants that are pharmacologically effective and have low or no side effects for use in preventive medicine. Culinary herbs and spices are an important part of human nutrition in all the cultures of the world. There is a growing amount of literature concerning the potential benefits of these herbs and spices from a health perspective especially in conferring protection against cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to provide information on the recent scientific findings on some common spices that have a distinct place in folk medicine in several of the Asian countries as well as on their traditional uses for the role they can play in the management of heart diseases and which may be useful in defining cost effective and inexpensive interventions for the prevention and control of CVDs. METHOD: Systematic literature searches were carried out and the available information on various medicinal plants traditionally used for cardiovascular disorders was collected via electronic search (using Pubmed, SciFinder, Scirus, GoogleScholar, JCCC@INSTIRC and Web of Science) and a library search for articles published in peerreviewed journals. No restrictions regarding the language of publication were imposed. RESULTS: This article highlights the recent scientific findings on four common spices viz. Greater cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.), Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), for the role they can play in the management of heart diseases. Although they have been used by many cultures since ancient times and have been known to exhibit several medicinal properties, current research shows that they can also be effectively used for the prevention and control of CVDs. CONCLUSION: Although scientific evidences supporting the benefits of spices in maintaining a healthy heart are available, more complete information is needed about the actual exposures to these dietary components that are required to bring about a response. The innumerable actions of spices that have been shown in in vitro experiments need to be demonstrated in more systematic, well-designed animal model studies. More rigorous clinical trials at the normally consumed levels are needed to determine long-term benefits as well as to assess adverse effects if any at higher concentrations, especially if consumed over longer periods. Once these extensive studies are carried out, it will be easy to define the appropriate intervention strategies utilizing these commonly used spices for achieving the maximum benefits on cardiovascular health without producing any ill-effects.

[Ab] Abstract:Hematopoietic injury is a major cause of mortality in radiation accidents and a primary side effect in patients undergoing radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced myelosuppression is largely attributed to the injury of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Coriander is a culinary herb with multiple pharmacological effects and has been widely used in traditional medicine. In this study, flavonoids were identified as the main component of coriander extract with rutin being the leading compound (rutin-enriched coriander extract; RE-CE). We evaluated the radioprotective effect of RE-CE against IR-induced HSPCs injury. Results showed that RE-CE treatment markedly improved survival, ameliorated organ injuries and myelosuppression, elevated HSPCs frequency, and promoted differentiation and proliferation of HSPCs in irradiated mice. The protective role of RE-CE in hematopoietic injury is probably attributed to its anti-apoptotic and anti-DNA damage effect in irradiated HSPCs. Moreover, these changes were associated with reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced antioxidant enzymatic activities in irradiated HSPCs. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that RE-CE is able to ameliorate IR-induced hematopoietic injury partly by reducing IR-induced oxidative stress.

[Ab] Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Raw vegetables including flowers, leaves, stems, and roots are important carriers of food borne pathogens. We evaluated the bacteriological contamination of unwashed coriander leaves, and effectiveness of cleansing with 0.1% potassium permanganate solution as decontamination method. RESULTS: Significant bacterial contamination including pathogens like Salmonella species and Aeromonas species were isolated from unwashed coriander leaves. Decontamination with 0.1% potassium permanganate was found to be more effective than three steps wash with sterile water.

[Ab] Abstract:Coriandrum sativum (C. sativum) or coriander is one of the most popularly used spices in culinary worldwide, and its medicinal values has been recognized since ancient time. C. sativum contains bioactive phytochemicals that are accounted for a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant, anticancer, neuroprotective, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, analgesic, migraine-relieving, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antimicrobial, and antiinflammatory activities. The major compound, linalool, abundantly found in seeds is remarked for its abilities to modulate many key pathogenesis pathways of diseases. Apart from the modulating effects, the potent antioxidant property of the C. sativum provides a key mechanism behind its protective effects against neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and metabolic syndrome. This review shed light on comprehensive aspects regarding the therapeutic values of the C. sativum, which indicate its significance of being a promising functional food for promoting the well-being in the era of aging and lifestyle-related diseases.

[Ab] Abstract:Despite controlling a diverse array of regulatory processes in plants, UV-B wavelengths (280-315 nm) are attenuated by common greenhouse materials such as glass and polycarbonate and are therefore depleted in many commercial growing environments. In this study, we analysed the architecture, pigment accumulation and antioxidant capacity of coriander (Coriandrum sativum, also known as cilantro) plants grown with and without supplementary UV-B (1.5 µmol m s ). We demonstrate that UV-B limits stem elongation responses to neighbour proximity perception (shade avoidance), promoting a more compact plant architecture. In addition, UV-B increased leaf quercetin content and total antioxidant capacity. Arabidopsis thaliana mutants deficient in flavonoid biosynthesis were not impaired in shade avoidance inhibition, suggesting that UV-B-induced flavonoid synthesis is not a component of this response. Our results indicate that UV-B supplementation may provide a method to manipulate the architecture, flavour and nutritional content of potted herbs whilst reducing the deleterious impacts of dense planting on product quality.

[Ab] Abstract:Diaper dermatitis is a common disorder. is a herbal remedy with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activities effects. In this non randomised clinical trial which was performed on 58 infants with diaper dermatitis referred to Faghihi Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, the efficacy and safety of topical Coriandrum extract cream is compared with hydrocortisone ointment. extract cream was administered for 37 (intervention group) and hydrocortisone 1% ointment for 21 (control group) patients. Patients were examined on days 3 and 10. Chi-square test was applied for statistical analysis. The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the cure rate (20 (54.1%) for the intervention group versus 19 (90.5%) for the control group) ( -value = 0.005) and side effects (10 (27%) for the intervention group versus 0 (0%) for control group) ( -value = 0.009) both in favor of hydrocortisone. This trial failed to confirm the efficacy of in the treatment of diaper dermatitis; however, it seems that if soothing compounds are used in combination with to reduce the mild irritation, Coriandrum extract can be an alternative treatment for diaper dermatitis.

[Ab] Abstract:In this paper, using L., a leaf-extracted, assisted microwave method (MM) was used to synthesize nickel oxide formation. We synthesized nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO) with a crystal size in the range of 15-16 nm by a leaf-assisted microwave method (LAMM). The synthesized materials show that an X-ray diffraction (XRD) study confirmed the formation of a single phase structure exhibiting a crystallite size in the range of 15-16 nm using Scherrer's method. The nickel oxide prepared by the MM had a surface area of 60.35 m²/g, pore volume of 0.9427 cm³/g and an average pore diameter of 13.27 Å. Surface morphology was analyzed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Catalytic activity (CA) tended toward the oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde. The inexpensive catalyst tested is likely effective as a catalyst due to synergistic interactions between metal oxides with high dispersion. In comparison with other findings, LAMM is easy and eco-friendly. The current study obtained nanocrystalline NiO that was suitable for potential applications in catalysis. The synthesized NiO could potentially be used in therapeutic field due to their competent antibacterial activity.

[Ab] Abstract:The present work deals with the ultrasound assisted green synthesis of iron oxide nano particle using Coriandrum sativum leaf extract as a reducing agent. The synthesized iron oxide nanoparticle was confirmed by UV spectra. The characterization was done to know more about morphology and size of the particle by SEM analysis which shows spherical particles with size ranging from 20 to 90nm. The antimicrobial activity of the leaf extract and the synthesized nanoparticles was studied against the pathogens Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger. The ultrasound assisted iron oxide nanoparticle shows higher scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity compared with iron oxide nanoparticle synthesized by magnetic stirrer and Coriandrum sativum leaf extract.
