Title: Effect of sports drinks on the surface properties of composite resins after prolonged exposure - in vitro study
Source: Braz. j. oral sci;18:e191651, jan.-dez. 2019. ilus.
Language: en.
Abstract: Aim: Using dietary supplements may affect the properties of composite resins due to their acidic pH. The present in vitro study aimed to assess the surface roughness and color stability of two composite resins - nanohybrid (Empress Direct) and nanoparticulate (Filtek Z350) - after prolonged exposure to dietary supplements. Methods: We produced 30 specimens from each composite (8x2-mm discs) and divided them into six groups (n=10). After the initial measurement of the surface properties (roughness and color), we exposed the specimens to a degradation process in Maltodextrin and Whey Protein for 22.5 and 7.5 days, respectively, using deionized water as the control solution. At the end of 22.5 days, we reassessed the specimens. After verifying data normality with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we performed ANOVA followed by Tukey's test at 5%. Results: We found significant differences for materials immersed in the Whey Protein solution (p<0.05). The roughness of Empress Direct was higher (0.45+0.07) than Filtek Z350 (0.22+0.05). The composites tested also showed color change (ΔE>3.3) after the immersion period (p<0.001). In Maltodextrin, the Empress Direct group presented (4.52+1.23) and Filtek Z350 (4.04+0.66), while after immersion in Whey Protein, they showed (5.34+1.68) and (4.26+1.02), respectively. Conclusion: Sports drinks changed the surface roughness and color stability of the composite resins studied. The Filtek Z350 group showed lower color variation than the Empress Direct composite in both solutions evaluated

Title: Parental Presence in Dental Operatory as a Behaviour Management Tool on Children in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India
Source: Pesqui. bras. odontopediatria clín. integr;19(1):4506, 01 Fevereiro 2019. tab.
Language: en.
Abstract: Objective: To interpret the change in child's behaviour in presence/absence of parents during dental care. Material and Methods: Sixty children were examined till the age of 12 years visiting the out patient department of pediatric dentistry where parents along with the child were allowed in the operatory. After sometime parents were asked to leave and behavioural changes were noted. During revisit again the behaviour was noted according to Frankl scale. McNemar test was applied to test the behaviour response of children with parental absence/presence. The significance level was set at 5 %. Results: In 1st visit, 78.3% showed positive behaviour and 21.7% showed negative behaviour in parental absence, indicating that the child has more likelihood of showing positive behaviour in the presence of parents (p<0.001). More positive behaviour of the children is noticed, when the parents are present in 3 -5 year age group. In other 6-8 and 9-12 year age group, no difference was noticed in the presence or absence of the parents (p>0.05). In second visit, the negative behaviour reduced. When parents were absent 21.7% showed negative behaviour (p=0.000). This indicated that the child has more likelihood of showing positive behaviour in the presence of parents. Age group-wise analysis revealed that in the 3-5 years age group presence or absence of parents is a significant factor for child's behaviour. This factor is a non-issue in the elder age group like 6-8 years and 9-12 years. When the parents are absent, no significant difference was observed (p>0.05). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in parental presence/absence in elder children while the same can't be said for younger children.

Source: Braz. dent. sci;22(2):243-251, 2019. tab.
Language: en.
Abstract: Objective: Congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors present challenges to dentists in terms of treatment planning and can negatively affect aesthetics and function in patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the preferred treatment approach of dentists with different specialties. Material and Methods: We carried out a descriptive, cross-sectional study using a questionnaire that was self-administered to 12 specialists in removable prosthodontics, 18 specialists in restorative dentistry, 14 specialists in orthodontics, and 173 registered general dentists. Results: General practitioners (72.7%), prosthodontists (92.9%) and, restorative dentists (80%) preferred prosthodontic replacement of missing maxillary lateral incisors, while orthodontists (57.1%) preferred canine substitution. Most general practitioners (62.7%), prosthodontists (71.4%), and orthodontists (92.9%), as well as many restorative specialists (40%), preferred implant-retained crowns for prosthetic replacement of missing lateral incisors. The dental specialties differed significantly in terms of their preferred modalities for treating children over the age of 12 years. General practitioners (56%) preferred removable partial dentures (RPDs), while a mere 17.2% preferred to carry out no treatment. All prosthodontists (100%) preferred treatment with RPDs. Restorative dentists preferred RPDs and adhesive bridges in equal number (33.3% in each case). Fifty percent of orthodontists treating children with missing lateral incisors preferred RPDs, followed by (28.6%) who preferred canine substitution. Conclusion: Preference varied for several reasons among dentists' treating both adults and children over 12 years of age (AU)

Title: Uso dos serviços de saúde bucal entre crianças de famílias elegíveis ao Programa Bolsa Família / Use of oral health services among children of families eligible to the Family Income Program.
Source: Belo Horizonte; s.n; 2016. 80 p.
Language: pt.
Thesis: Submitted to Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Faculdade de Odontologia presented for the degree Mestre.

Vulnerable population groups are more exposed to sickening risks and make less use of health services. There are six times more children who have never had accessed dental services among beneficiaries of the Family Income Program. This study aimed at describing dental services use by children up to seven years old, from families eligible for the Family Income Program in a city of Minas Gerais. Sampling was random and non-probabilistic. Between September and November, 2016, 84 adults responsible for the children were interviewed by one of the researchers, using a questionnaire previously validated, after signing an informed consent form. The dependent variable was the use of oral health services by the children and the independent ones were: social support policies, socioeconomic and demographic factors and the perception of the responsible about the oral health of the child. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using StataR software. In order to analyze the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent one, the Pearson chi-square association test was performed. The variables significantly associated with the use of oral health services were: child's age range (p = 0.000) and the perception of the responsible about childs oral health (p = 0.040). Most of the participating families were below the extreme poverty line (76.19%). There was a predominance of reports of non-use of dental services (67.86%). Among those who reported use, 92.31% found the treatment sought, with a predominance of older children whose caregivers reported less satisfaction with the oral health of their children. Data related to the use of oral health services were identified, together with their social determinants among children from families eligible for the Family Income Program, highlighting the importance of studies that could help address health inequities in vulnerable populations

Title: Microscopic evaluation of rotatory and handle caries removal on glass ionomer cement/dentin interface
Source: Braz. j. oral sci;17:e18026, 2018. ilus.
Language: en.
Abstract: Aim: This study evaluated the interface between glass ionomer cement (GIC) and dentin using the conventional and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) techniques for removal of decayed tissue. Materials and Methods: After preparation of the cavities by the conventional (Group I GI) and ART (Group II GII) techniques, the specimens were divided into 3 subgroups according to the GIC used (n=10). The conventional GIC KETAC FILL (3M/ESPE) was used in the groups GI-1 and GII-1, the conventional GIC VIDRION R (SS WHITE) in the groups GI-2 and GII-2, and the modified GIC FUJI II LC (GC Corporation) in the groups GI-3 and GII-3. For the microscopic analysis, the teeth were decalcified in a solution containing equal portions of 50% formic acid and 20% sodium citrate, dehydrated and submitted to paraffin baths. The samples were sectioned (6m in thickness), stained by the Brown and Brenn method, and evaluated in a light microscope. Results: The microscopic analysis revealed interaction between the material and dentin structure only with the FUJI II LC. In addition, the behavior was superior for the conventional technique in comparison to the ART technique. Conclusion: It was concluded that the technique used for carious dentin removal does not seem to be determinant for the bonding of ionomeric materials to the dental structure, except for the resin-modified GIC in which the formed hybrid layer was higher using the conventional technique

Source: Rev. ABENO;16(3):46-57, 2016. tab, ilus.
Language: pt.

The university extension, concerning social demands and the recent results of SB Brazil epidemiological surveys, which pointed to a great social debt in the context of oral health, becomes a collaborative alternative to the social development of the place where it is acting. The aim of this study was to describe the costs and operationalization of collective actions (teeth brushing, plaque disclosure and fluortherapy) held weekly in 400 children enrolled at the Municipal School of infant and primary education Recanto Feliz, in the municipality of Francisco Beltrão, PR. The methodology used takes as reference an estimated cost of material for a year (40 weeks of the school year) by developing an Extension Program conducted by the Dentistry course of Universidade Paranaense. The project financial cost was around R$ 16.00 per child/year, including the acquisition of permanent use material (collective and individual brush holders), which can be reused in subsequent years, lowering the costs of oral health actions, reaching R$ 8.34 per child/year (AU).
