Resumo: Se ha realizado un studio etnobotánico preliminar en la vertiente sur de la sierra de la Albera, situada al noroeste de Cataluña, y noroeste de la comarca del Alto Ampurdán (Gerona). Esta zona cubre 277 km2 y tiene una población de 12.452 habitantes. Para ello, se ha entrevistado a 18 personas, se han identificado las plantas reportadas y se han analizados los resultados en comparación con los de otros territorios. Se ha recogido la información etnobotánica sobre 155 especies de plantas pertenecientes a 67 familias, con 655 informes de uso de los cuales 7 son de elementos inorgánicos o de origen animal. Las especies más veces citadas han sido: Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis, Sambucus nigra y Urtica dioica y las familias más citadas han sido las Compuestas y las Labiadas; las enfermedades con más usos reportados han sido las relacionadas con el aparato digestivo (AU)

Foi efectuado um estudo introductorio etnobotánico no sul da Serra de Albera, localizad no noroeste da Catalunha e regiao nordeste do Alto Ampurdán (Girona). A área abrange 277 km2, com uma populaçao de 15.452 habitantes. Foram entrevistadas 18 pessoas, identificaram-se as plantas utilizadas, e compararam-se os resultados com os de outros territórios. Foram recolhidas informaçoes etnobotánicas sobre 155 espécies pertencentes a 67 famílias, com 655 relatórios de uso dos quais 7 correspondem a productos inorgánicos ou animais. As espécies mais citadas foram Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis, Sambucus nigra e Urtica dioica, sendo as famílias as famílias Compositae e Labiatae as mais citadas; as doenças com mais utilizaçoes relatadas foram as gastrointestinais (AU)

An ethnobotanical introductory study has been conducted in Southern Sierra de la Albera, located in the northwest of Catalonia and northeastern región of Alto Ampurdán (Gerona). The area covers 277 km2 with a population of 12.452 inhabitants. We have interviewed 18 people, identifying the plants reported, and we have compared results with those of other territories. Information on 155 species belonging to 67 botanical families has been collected with 655 use reports of which 7 correspond to inorganic or animal products. The most cited species were Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis, Sambucus nigra and Urtica dioica with Compositae and Labiatae the most cited families. Gastrointestinal diseases were those with more reported uses (AU)

Resumo: Because of the widespread use of botanicals, it has become crucial for health professionals to improve their knowledge about safety problems. Several herbal medicines contain chemicals with allergenic properties responsible for contact dermatitis. Among these, one is Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary), a plant used since ancient times in folk medicine; at the present time it is used worldwide as a spice and flavouring agent, as a preservative and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The present article aims to revise and summarise scientific literature reporting cases of contact dermatitis caused by the use of R. officinalis as a raw material or as herbal preparations. Published case reports were researched on the following databases and search engines: PUBMED, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Scopus. The used keywords were: R. officinalis and rosemary each alone or combined with the words allergy, contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, sensitisation and occupational dermatitis. The published case reports show that both rosemary extracts and raw material can be responsible for allergic contact dermatitis. Two cases related to contact dermatitis caused by cross-reactivity between rosemary and thyme were also commented. The diterpene carnosol, a chemical constituent of this plant, has been imputed as a common cause for this reaction. The incidence of contact dermatitis caused by rosemary is not common, but it could be more frequent with respect to the supposed occurrence. It seems plausible that cases of contact dermatitis caused by rosemary are more frequent with respect to the supposed occurrence, because they could be misdiagnosed. For this reason, this possibility should be carefully considered in dermatitis differential diagnosis (AU)

Título: Hypoglycemic and hepatoprotective activity of Rosmarinus officinalis extract in diabetic rats

Resumo: The present study examined the effect of water extract (200 mg/kg body weight) of Rosmarinus officinalis L. in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats for 21 days. The hepatoprotective effects were investigated in the liver tissues sections. There was a significant increase in serum liver biochemical parameters (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase), accompanied by a significant decrease in the level of total protein and albumin in the STZ-induced rats when compared with that of the normal group. The high-dose treatment group (200 mg/kg body wt) significantly restored the elevated liver function enzymes near to normal. This study revealed that rosemary extracts exerted a hepatoprotective effect. The results indicate that the extract exhibits the protective effect on tissues and prove its potentials as an antidiabetic agent (AU)

Resumo: Introduction: In cirrhosis some toxic substances accumulate in brain and modify the expression of several neuronal receptors. Thus, the use of medicinal plants such as Rosmarinus officinalis L. has been proposed in several pathologies due to its hepatoprotective, antioxidant and neuroprotective activity. In this study we evaluated the expression of the subunits NR1, NR2A and NR2B of the glutamate receptor in rat prefrontal cortex in a model of hepatic damage induced with carbon tetrachloride after a treatment with Rosmarinus officinalis L. Methods: We used a total of 24 male Wistar rats weighing 80-90g. body weight. We formed three study groups: control group (C) without a treatment, carbon tetrachloride group (CC14), and CC14 group plus Rosmarinus officinalis L (CCl4+ROM; 1.5g/kg of extract orally). Results:The expression of the NR1, NR2A and NR2B subunits in cirrhotic animals increased compared to the control group, however treatment with Rosmarinus officinalis L. was able to reduce this expression to normal levels compared with CC14 and CCl4+ROM groups. These results could be due to an improvement in hepatic function. Conclusion: Treatment with extract of Rosmarinus officinalis L. in cirrhotic animals modifies the expression of subunits of the NMDA receptor due to an improvement in hepatocellular function in the presence of antioxidant compounds and flavonoids (AU)

Introducción: En la cirrosis, algunas sustancias tóxicas se acumulan en el cerebro y alteran la expresión de diversos receptores neuronales. En este sentido, se ha propuesto el uso de plantas medicinales como el Rosmarinus officinalis L. en diversas patologías debido su actividad hepatoprotectora, antioxidante y neuroprotectora. En el presente trabajo se evaluó la expresión de las subunidades NR1, NR2A y NR2B del receptor a Glutamato en la corteza prefrontal de la rata en un modelo de daño hepático inducido con tetracloruro de carbono después del tratamiento con Rosmarinus officinalis L. Métodos: Se utilizaron un total de 24 ratas macho Wistar de 80-90g. de peso corporal. Se formaron 3 grupos de trabajo: grupo testigo (T) sin ningún tratamiento, grupo tetracloruro de carbono (CCl4) y grupo CCl4 más Rosmarinus officinalis L (CCl4 +ROM; 1.5g/kg del extracto por vía oral). Resultados: La expresión de las subunidades NR1, NR2A y NR2B incrementaron en los animales cirróticos con respecto al grupo T, sin embargo el tratamiento con Rosmarinus officinalis L fue capaz de disminuir la expresión a niveles normales comparados con los grupos de CCl4 y T. Estos resultados podrían deberse a una mejora en la función hepática. Conclusión: El tratamiento con el extracto de Rosmarinus officinalis L en los animales cirróticos modifica la expresión de las subunidades del receptor NMDA debido a la mejora en la función hepatocelular dada la presencia de compuestos antioxidantes y flavonoides (AU)

Resumo: The content of α-glucoxidase in two varieties of honey covered by the Granada Honey Protected Denomination of Origin Regulatory Board is studied. The evolution of invertase activity was followed for 10 months, in 12 monofloral chestnut honey samples collected in the Alpujarra area of Granada and 9 monofloral rosemary honey samples collected in la Resinera, Valle de Lecrin and in the Sierra de Baza for 10 months. The invertase was measured in the months of June 2005, September 2005, January 2006 and finally in the month of April 2006. We obtained an invertase activity in fresh chestnut honey of 194.6±3.6 U/kg, with a range between 188.7 U/kg and 199.5 U/kg. After 10 months at ambient temperature, the chestnut honey lost between 28.3% and 39.8% of the initial values of α-glucosidase, with an average of 33.4%±3.3%. In the rosemary honey we obtained average invertase values of 69.4±14.9 U/kg, with a range between 56.9 U/kg and 91.9 U/kg. After 10 months at ambient temperature, the rosemary honey lost between 19.3% and 32.3% of the initial α-glucosidase values, with an average of 28.1%±4.4%(AU)

Resumo: Esta revisión trata esencialmente sobre los diterpenos antiinflamatorios procedentes de especies de Labiadas. Se estudian las publicaciones posteriores a 2002 referentes a los cuatro tipos estructurales más importantes en esa familia: labdano, abietano, pimarano y kaurano. Además se incluyen algunas moléculas interesantes obtenidas de especies de diferente origen taxonómico. De entre los mecanismos implicados destaca la inhibición del metabolismo del ácido araquidónico a través de ciclooxigenasas y lipoxigenasas, así como el freno a la producción de NO o citocinas. Adicionalmente se ha descrito para algunos principios el aumento de la expresión de hemo-oxigenasa 1. Algunos de los géneros botánicos mejor representados son Lavandula, Isodon, Rosmarinus y Sideritis (AU)

This review is devoted to the antiinflammatory diterpenoids obtained from species of Labiatae. Basically, we study the post-2002 publications concerning the four major structural types in the family: labdane, abietane, pimarane and kaurane. Certain interesting diterpenes derived from plants of different taxonomic origin are also reported. Among the mechanisms involved in the pharmacological effect, we should highlight the inhibition of arachidonic acid metabolism through cyclo-oxygenases and lipoxygenases, and the decrease in the production of NO or cytokines. Additionally, some principles are described as enhancers of the expression of heme oxygenase 1. Some of the botanical genera best represented are Lavandula, Isodon, Rosmarinus or Sideritis (AU)

Resumo: Se propone una formulación sobre una base de absorción (Neo PCL®) y un peculiar activo --Miel de Romero- para uso tópico El sistema se somete a un estudio farmacotécnico --organolepsia, microfotográfico, tipo de interposición, pH, reológico; de estabilidad física--; y de eficacia dermofarmacéutica --hidratación y emoliencia--.La formulación, --brillante, homogénea, lavable--, se estructura sobre la base de un sistema emulsionado aceite-en-agua, y pH ácido dermocompatible (4,03). De los parámetros reológicos se obtienen datos altamente satisfactorios de viscosidad (S.T.R.120 = 24,6 por ciento) y extensibilidad (I.E.200 = 1582,734 mm2). El grado de eficacia se concreta en un incremento de hidratación de (AH120 = 24,2 por ciento) y un intervalo de emoliencia de [60-122 µg/cm2], resultados que la cualifican como una forma de aplicación idónea para todo tipo de piel (AU)
