Título: Eficacia in vitro de tres endectocidas frente a Triatoma infestans / In vitro efficacy of three endectocides against Triatoma infestans
Fonte: Rev. cuba. med. trop;66(3):338-350, sep.-dic. 2014.

Introduction: various studies have demonstrated the role that areas around the houses play in domiciliary re-infestation by Triatomainfestans (kissing bugs). With the aim of removing residual foci of T. infestans that inhabit in neighboring areas of houses, different strategies have been developed. The administration of different anti-T. infestans compounds to animals living in areas around the houses might be a good way to reduce the risk of domiciliary re-infestation. Objective: to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of three antiparasitic agents, doramectin (DRM), ivermectin (IVM) and eprinomectin (EPR) against fifth instar nymphs of Triatomainfestans. Methods: artificial feeders were designed , which contained heparinized and fortified blood with various concentrations of the three endectocides (100-0.4 ng/mL). We used 600 fifth instar nymphs of T. infestans during the experiment. A group of insects were fed with untreated blood (control). After feeding they were under observation to check their condition every 24 hours for a week. Results: the three molecules showed activity against T. infestans. In comparing the activity of the three molecules, DRM exhibited greater potency against insects, it even kept its activity against T. infestans at 0.4 ng/mL (lowest concentration tested). In the case of EPR and IVM, their efficacy began to lower at concentrations below 6.25 and 3.15 ng/mL respectively, being totally inactive at 0.4 ng/mL concentration. Conclusions: Based on these results, we can assert that under our experimental conditions, IVM, EPR and DRM show in vitro high efficacy against T. infestans, being the latter more effective than the other two molecules(AU)

Título: Ocorrência de triatomíneos no Estado do Ceará, Brasil / Occurrence of triatomines in the state of Ceará, Brazil
Fonte: Rev. Inst. Adolfo Lutz;79(Único):1-7, 31 mar. 2020. mapa, tab.
Idioma: pt.
(AU)

This integrative review aims to analyze the scientific publications in the last twelve years on triatomines found at Ceará State. For this, a search was performed in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) databases with association of the descriptors "Chagas Disease", "Triatomines" and "Brazil". After applying the inclusion, exclusion criteria and analysis of their content, eight articles were selected for the analysis and discussion. Some species of triatomines found in the Northeast region are of extreme epidemiological importance since they are associated with human households. The most prevalent species with epidemiological importance due to their large distribution in Ceará and presence in the peridomestic environment are: Triatoma brasiliensis, Triatoma pseudomaculata, Panstrogylus megistus, Panstrogylus lutzi and Rhodnius nasutus. Several species of triatomines have the capacity to transmit T. cruzi and the ability to adapt to the peridomestic and domestic environment turning humans more susceptible to infection, thus requiring surveillance and vector control strategies. Título: Assessment of the housing improvement program for chagas disease control in the northwestern municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Fonte: Rev. Soc. Bras. Med. Trop;49(5):572-578, Sept.-Oct. 2016. tab, graf.
Idioma: en.
Resumo: Abstract INTRODUCTION: The Housing Improvement Program for Chagas Disease Control (HIPCDC) was established in 2001 in Northwestern Rio Grande do Sul State, aiming to improve the conditions of the domiciliary and peridomiciliary environments to make them resistant to triatomine colonization. This study aimed to assess the impact of the HIPCDC on triatomine control by developing local population and authority awareness on the issue. METHODS: The study was conducted by means of questionnaires applied to local authorities and the program beneficiaries. Three municipalities - Ajuricaba, Coronel Barros, and Crissiumal - were visited. RESULTS: A program coordinator from each municipality and 62 individuals from selected households were interviewed. The authorities reported difficulties in the implementation of the program due to differences between the project development period and financial resource availability, in addition to a lack of understanding by the community not included in the program. As for the houses, most improvements were made in the peridomiciliary environments; moreover, construction of 4 new residences, as well as the renovation of others, was also reported. Regarding suggestions to the program, requests for better planning (44.9%) and renovation quality (36.7%) were highlighted. With reference to the presence of triatomine bugs, prior to the HIPCDC adaptations, 12.9% of the respondents reported coming across at least one specimen at home, as compared to 22.6% who found these insects in peridomiciliary areas. CONCLUSIONS: Despite reports of difficulties in carrying out the HIPCDC, there was an improvement in the housing conditions, with no triatomine occurrence reports after the program implementation.

Título: Epididymo-orchitis caused by Histoplasma capsulatumin a Colombian patient
Fonte: Rev. Soc. Bras. Med. Trop;50(6):868-870, Nov.-Dec. 2017. graf.
Idioma: en.
Resumo: Abstract Although histoplasmosis is generally a self-limited disease, disseminated infection can occur in patients lacking effective cell-mediated immunity, reaching virtually every organ, even the genitourinary tract in rare cases. We report a case of epididymo-orchitis in an immunocompetent 38-year-old bricklayer from the rural area of Villeta, Cundinamarca, Colombia. The patient presented with testicular pain and macroscopic scrotal changes requiring a left orchiectomy, with microbiological isolation and molecular confirmation of Histoplasma capsulatum.

Resumo: Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chagas disease surveillance requires current knowledge on synanthropic triatomines. We analyzed the occurrence and Trypanosoma cruzi infection rates of triatomine bugs in central Brazil, during 2012-2014. METHODS: Triatomines were collected inside or around houses, and T. cruzi infection was determined by optical microscopy and conventional/quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Of the 2706 triatomines collected, Triatoma sordida was the most frequent species in Goiás State, whereas Panstrongylus megistus predominated in the Federal District. Parasites identified were T. cruzi, T. rangeli, and Blastocrithidia sp. CONCLUSIONS: P. megistus and T. sordida sustained the risk of T. cruzi transmission to humans in central Brazil.

Resumo: Abstract INTRODUCTION: Studying the feeding preferences of triatomines is an important entomological surveillance tool, since continuous surveillance of the disease is necessary. METHODS: The precipitin reaction was used to describe the feeding preferences of triatomines along with their natural infection by flagellates similar to Tyrpanosoma cruzi. Six hundred eighty-seven insects were examined, including Triatoma brasiliensis, Triatoma pseudomaculata, and Panstrongylus lutzi. RESULTS: Sixty-nine (10%) of 687 triatomines examined tested positive for flagellates similar to T. cruzi, and 8 (1.2%) of these fed on human blood. CONCLUSIONS: This study found potential transmitters of Chagas disease both inside and outside the domiciliar environment.
