Resumo: BACKGROUND: Bioremoval of phenolic compounds using fungi and bacteria has been studied extensively; nevertheless, trinitrophenol bioremediation using modified Oscillatoria cyanobacteria has been barely studied in the literature. RESULTS: Among the effective parameters of bioremediation, algal concentration (3.18 g·L−1 ), trinitrophenol concentration (1301 mg·L−1 ), and reaction time (3.75 d) were screened by statistical analysis. Oscillatoria cyanobacteria were modified by starch/nZVI and starch/graphene oxide in a bubble column bioreactor, and their bioremoval efficiency was investigated. Modifiers, namely, starch/zero-valent iron and starch/GO, increased trinitrophenol bioremoval efficiency by more than 10% and 12%, respectively, as compared to the use of Oscillatoria cyanobacteria alone. Conclusions: It was found that starch/nano zero-valent iron and starch/GO could be applied to improve the removal rate of phenolic compounds from the aqueous solution.

Título: Influence of iron deprivation on virulence traits of mycobacteria

Resumo: ABSTRACT Novel strategies to combat the ever increasing burden of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) causing tuberculosis (TB) remains a global concern. The ability of MTB to sense and adapt to restricted iron conditions in the hostile environment is essential for their survival and confers the basis of their success as dreadful pathogen. The striking and clinically relevant virulence trait of MTB is its ability to form biofilms and adhere to the host cells. The present study elucidated the effect of iron deprivation on biofilm formation and cell adherence of Mycobacterium smegmatis, a non-pathogenic surrogate of MTB. Firstly, we showed that iron deprivation leads to enhanced cell sedimentation rate and altered colony morphology depicting alterations in cell surface envelope properties. We explored that biofilm formation and cell adherence to polystyrene surface as well as human oral epithelial cells were considerably reduced under iron deprivation both in presence of 2,2 BP (iron chelator) and siderophore mutant Δ011-14 strain. We further investigated that the potency of three first line anti-TB drugs (Isoniazid, Ethambutol, Rifampicin) to inhibit both biofilm formation and cell adhesion were enhanced under iron deprivation in contrast to the drugs when tested alone. Taken together, by virtue of the indispensability of iron for functional virulence traits in mycobacteria, iron deprivation strategies could be further exploited against this notorious human pathogen to explore novel drug targets.

Resumo: Estudos recentes têm relatado o estado pluricarencial da população dos estados da Região Norte do Brasil. Paradoxalmente nessa região encontra-se uma grande biodiversidade da flora com variadas frutas e hortaliças, ainda não tão conhecidas, mas que os pesquisadores acreditam ser altamente nutritivas. Entre elas, tem-se o cariru, planta herbácea da família Portulacea, hortaliça própria da região amazônica e de fácil cultivo. Amostras dessa verdura foram submetidas a determinações analíticas a fim de obter maiores informações sobre seu valor nutricional. A maior fração desse vegetal é a água (92,24 por cento), seguida de lipídeos (3,04 por cento), carboidratos (2,94 por cento), minerais totais (1,71 por cento) e de proteína (0,07 por cento), constituindo um alimento de reduzido valor calórico (40 Kcal/100g). Tendo em vista os resultados encontrados na análise de minerais, essa folhosa pode ser considerada como excelente fonte de ferro, zinco e molibdênio, já que o consumo de 200 g/dia desse alimento atenderia as necessidades diárias desses nutrientes. Chama-se atenção para os conteúdos de selênio e manganês, onde 100g dessa biomassa fresca podem fornecer duas e três vezes, respectivamente, as quantidades recomendadas para adultos pelos órgãos internacionais de saúde, com as devidas precauções, já que excessos desses oligominerais podem causar danos à saúde. Sendo assim, recomenda-se a inclusão dessa folhosa no hábito alimentar brasileiro, por apresentar minerais em quantidades suficientes para minimizar o estado carencial de muitas pessoas, residentes na região Norte do país, exatamente onde é encontrada em abundância e com custo reduzido.

Recent studies have been related a food lacking state of population in states from north of Brazil. Paradoxically in this region a great biodiversity in the flora can be found with various fruits and vegetables, not very known so far, but researchers believe in their high nutritional values. One of them is Cariru, an herbaceous plant to Portulacea family, vegetable native from Amazon region and easy to grow. Sample of this vegetable was transformed in biomass and submitted to a quantitative analysis in order to have a lot of information about nutritional value. Analysis showed that the biggest amount was moisture (92.44 percent), followed by lipids (3.04 percent), carbohydrates (2.94 percent), total minerals (1.71 percent) and protein (0.07 percent), compound a reduced caloric food, 40 kcal/100g. Analyzing the mineral results, cariru can be consider as an excellent iron, zinc and molybdenum source, that the consumption of 200 gin the vegetable/day would attend daily needs of these nutrients. This is very important to selenium and manganese contents, because 100g fresh of biomass can supply 2 or 3 times, respectively, the RDI for adult. The excess of this oligominerals can be hazardous for human body. Therefore, the inclusion of this vegetable on a diet of Brazilian is recommended, because it presents enough minerals to minimize the food lacking state of people who lives in North of Brazil.

Resumo: Introducción: El Ferrical®, suplemento nutricional producido en LABIOFAM, Cuba, aporta fundamentalmente como nutriente mineral, hierro hemínico. Este microelemento es considerado uno de los minerales imprescindibles en la dieta diaria. Las necesidades nutricionales del hierro varían con la edad, entre otros factores; llega a ser hasta de 28 mg diarios para las mujeres embarazadas. Objetico: identificar el aporte de nutrientes minerales del suplemento nutricional Ferrical® a los requerimientos nutricionales diarios por grupos de población, para Cuba. Métodos: se compararon los valores de cada nutriente mineral informados como requerimiento diario para Cuba y los aportes del Ferrical®, a las dosis propuestas por el fabricante. Para el caso del hierro, se comparó el aporte del Ferrical® a la mayor dosis propuesta, contra el nivel máximo de ingestión tolerable. Resultados: la principal contribución del Ferrical® respecto a minerales es de hierro y potasio. El aporte de potasio es del 8,37 por ciento al 23,92 por ciento de las necesidades diarias de la población sana y del hierro entre el 60 por ciento y el 76,36 por ciento, de los requerimientos. A la máxima dosis propuesta, 120 mL/día, el aporte de hierro es de 33,6 mg, un 84 por ciento del nivel máximo tolerable. Conclusiones: el principal aporte del Ferrical® es del nutriente hierro hemínico, el cual suple las necesidades diarias según los distintos grupos de edades y requerimientos nutricionales específicos; además no presenta ningún nutriente que a las dosis propuestas constituya riesgo de evento adverso(AU)

Introduction: Ferrical® is a nutritional supplement produced by LABIOFAM in Cuba. The main constituent is the hemo group iron, one of the main minerals for health. The nutritional requirements for iron change with the age and it can reach 28 mg daily in pregnant women. Objetive: to identify the contribution of mineral nutrients by Ferrical® to meet daily nutritional requirements of the various Cuban population groups. Methods: comparison of each mineral nutrient values reported as daily requirement for Cuba and the Ferrical®contributions at the doses suggested by the manufacturer, was compared with the Cuban people daily nutritional needs. In the case of iron, Ferrical® contribution at the highest suggested dose was compared to the maximum level of allowable. Results: Ferrical® mainly provided iron and potassium. The potassium contribution reached 8,37 percent to 23.92 percent of the daily requirements of healthy population whereas iron met 60 percent to 76.36 percent of such requirements. At the highest suggested dose of 120mL/day, iron provided 33.6 mg for 84 percent of maximum allowable intake. Conclusions: the hemo Iron is the principal contribution of Ferrical®, which met the daily needs of the different population group in terms of specific nutritional requirements. Additionally, no risk of adverse event was observed in any nutrient at the suggested doses(AU)

Título: Inadecuada prescripción de hierro como factor de riesgo de anemia ferropénica pediátrica / Inadequate dose prescription of iron as arisk factor for iron deficiency anemia in children

Resumo: Se estudio analiza las características de las prescripciones de hierro medicinal realizadasa 100 lactantes (50 anémicos y 50 controles), de edades comprendidas entre 6 y 30 meses, que consultaron el Hospital de Pediatría J. P. Garrahan durante 1997. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre pacientes anémicos y controles en la siguientes variables: prescripción realizada, 29 anémicos y 42 controles (p: 0.008), prescripción correcta, 7 anémicos y 33 controles (p: 0.00001) y con aclaración de dar hierro lejos de la leche (p: 0.0017). No hubo diferencias en hacer la prescripción por escrito, ni en aclarar darlo con cítricos. En el aspecto socioeconómico, sólo hubo diferencias significativas en el antecedente de empleopermanente de los padres antes del año de vida del niño, 31 anémicos y 43 controles (p: 0.01). No se encontraron diferencias entre casos y controles en el Score de Graffar, en el número o sitio de los controles médicos realizados, ni en laespecialidad de los médicos que realizaron las prescripciones. Se observó un aumento promedio de 2.41 g/dl de hemoglobina en los pacientes anémicos luego de unmes de tratamiento oral con sulfato ferroso. Conclusión: la inadecuada o inexistente prescripción de hierro medicamentoso a lactantes, constituye un factor de riesgo de anemia ferropénica.

Resumo: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may severely affect the quality of life of patients. A deficient iron incorporation into the central nervous system has an important role in the pathophysiology of RLS. Severely affected patients may not respond to current therapeutic options. We report a preliminary experience with five patients with severe RLS and low serum ferritin levels who did not improve with oral iron. All were treated with 1 g of intravenous iron carboxymaltose. They experienced a marked improvement in symptoms, evident even during the first week of therapy that had persistent after up to two years of follow-up. A significant change in the RLS severity scale was observed after intravenous iron. Serum ferritin levels increased in all of them. Intravenous iron could be a therapeutic option for patients with severe RLS.

Resumo: Objetivos: Caracterizar el consumo de energía y nutrientes en niños menores de 5 años en el Perú, entre 1997 y 2001. Materiales y métodos: Se aplicó una encuesta de pesada directa de alimentos en 1644 niños seleccionados por muestreo probabilístico bietápico en los dominios geográficos: Lima metropolitana, resto de costa, sierra urbana, sierra rural, selva y trapecio andino (departamentos de Ayacucho, Apurímac, Huancavelica, Cusco y Puno); los cuales cubren la totalidad del territorio peruano. Se determinaron las medianas del consumo de energía, macronutrientes, proteínas de origen animal, vitamina A y hierro. Se calculó el porcentaje de la población infantil que consumió menos de 90 por ciento, 75 por ciento y 50 por ciento de los requerimientos y recomendaciones nutricionales y se calculó las correspondientes brechas del consumo para los mismos puntos de corte. Se compararon entre los años las medianas y los porcentajes referidos, empleando la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis y Chi cuadrado. Resultados: A nivel nacional se evidenció un incremento significativo del consumo de energía, carbohidratos y vitamina A; a pesar de ello los niños mostraron un bajo consumo y cobertura de los requerimientos y recomendaciones de energía, grasas y hierro. El consumo de proteínas totales excedió el 100 por ciento de las recomendaciones en todos los ámbitos, se halló un bajo consumo de proteína animal sólo en la sierra rural y el trapecio andino. Conclusiones: A pesar de los incrementos de consumo observados en el tiempo, los niños mostraron elevadas prevalencias de bajo consumo de energía y nutrientes, en especial hierro y grasa, siendo afectados fundamentalmente los ámbitos de la sierra rural y trapecio andino.

Objectives: To characterize energy and nutrient consumption in less than 5 year old children in Peru between 1997 and 2001. Materials and Methods: A direct food-weighing survey was administered to 1644 children selected in a two-staged probabilistic sampling in the following geographical domains: Lima, rest of the coast, urban areas in the highlands, rural areas in the highlands, jungle, and Andean Trapezium (Ayacucho, Apurimac, Huancavelica, Cusco, and Puno departments); covering the whole Peruvian surface area. Median values for energy, macronutrient, animal protein, vitamin A, and iron consumption. The percentage of infant population with a less-than 90 per cent, 75 per cent, and 50 per cent of nutritional requirement and recommendations was calculated, as well as consumption gap for the same cut-off values. Median and percentage values were compared year-by-year, using Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests. Results: Throughout the country a significant increase in energy, carbohydrates, and vitamin A consumption was observed; in spite of this, children assessed showed low consumption and coverage of energy, fat, and iron requirements and recommendations. Total protein consumption exceeded 100 of daily recommendations in all places studied, and low animal protein consumption was found in the rural areas in the highlands, as well as in the Andean Trapezium. Conclusions: In spite of the increases in food consumption observed during the study period, children showed high prevalence of low energy and nutrient consumption, particularly iron and fat, and mostly affected regions were rurral areas in the highlands and Andean Trapezium.

Resumo: Objetivo: Describir las características del consumo y aporte de energía y nutrientes de una papilla en la dieta de niños de 6 a 36 meses de edad beneficiarios de un Programa de Complementación Alimentaria. Materiales y Métodos: El diseño fue descriptivo y transversal. Se aplicó el método retrospectivo de recordatorio del consumo de alimentos de 24 horas. La muestra estuvo conformada por 432 niños beneficiarios del programa. Los requerimientos y recomendaciones de energía y nutrientes fueron determinados a partir de lo establecido por FAO/OMS/ONU para energía y proteínas, y por RDA para hierro y vitamina A. Resultados: El 42,1 por ciento de los beneficiarios de 6 a 11 meses cubrieron en promedio menos de 90 por ciento de sus requerimientos energéticos, esta proporción fue 47 por ciento entre los beneficiarios de 12 a 23 meses y 64,4 por ciento entre los beneficiarios de 24 a 36 meses. La brecha calórica fue directamente proporcional a la edad de los beneficiarios. La mediana del consumo de la papilla osciló entre 30 y 90 g en el grupo de 6 a 11 meses, 45 y 69 g en el grupo de 12 a 23 meses y de 34 a 90 g en el grupo de 24 a 36 meses. Conclusiones: Se evidenció que la papilla mejoró el aporte de energía, vitamina A y hierro en la dieta del niño, llegando a cubrir los requerimientos en la mayoría de los grupos etáreos.

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of energy and nutrients intake and supply with the addition of «papilla¼to diet in 6 to 36 month old children who participate in a complementary feeding program. Materials and Methods:The study design was descriptive and cross-sectional. The retrospective method of the 24 hours food intake recallsurvey was used. The sample included all 432 children participating in the program. Energy and nutrient requirementsand recommendations were determined according to FAO/WHO/UN parameters for energy and protein intake; andaccording to RDA for iron and vitamin A. Results: 42,1% of 6 to 11 month old participating children had their 90% andless of their energy requirements fulfilled. This rate was 47% in 12 to 23 month old participants and 64,4% in 24 to 36month old participants. The calorie gap was directly proportional to the participants' age. Median of «papilla¼ intakefluctuated between 30 and 90 g in the 6 to 11 month old group, 45 to 69 g in the 12 to 23 month old group, and 34 to90 g in the 24 to 36 month old group. Conclusions: It was evidenced that the «papilla¼ improved energy, vitamin A,and iron supply in children's diet, complying with nutritional requirements in most age groups studied.
