Introduction: Since the introduction of the liposuction technique, the improvement of body contour has been gaining new horizons. Superficial liposuction has been used in favor of aesthetics; the use of technologies, such as VASER and diode laser at 915- and 980-nm wavelengths, helps reduce complications and improves post-time, healing time, and cutaneous retraction. Methods: Fourteen patients submitted to high-resolution laser lipolysis were studied between 2014 and 2016. The level of patient satisfaction regarding the treatment outcome was assessed. Results: The majority of the patients were men, with a mean age of 39 years and a mean pain score of 2.3 on the visual pain scale (0 to 10), presenting lasting results after 1 year, with no complications and an early return to work and physical activities. Conclusions: The use of diode laser at the wavelengths of 915 and 980 nm in high-definition liposculpture promoted satisfactory, promising results and should be tested in a larger sample of patients.

Resumo: Abstract Objective To compare sex difference in metabolic effect of olanzapine versus aripiprazole on schizophrenia. Methods A twelve-week prospective open-label cohort study to compare four subgroups according to first-episode schizophrenia patients' type of drug usage and sex: female aripiprazole (n = 11), male aripiprazole (n = 11), female olanzapine (n = 10), and male olanzapine (n = 11) for body mass index, fasting serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting glucose. Results Aripiprazole may be associated with weight gain in female patients with low-baseline weight. Aripiprazole may have an adverse effect of weight and favorable effects of circulating glucose and lipid on female over male schizophrenia patients. The aripiprazole-induced changes in glucose and lipid may be independent of body fat storage, especially for female schizophrenia patients. Olanzapine may have adverse effects of weight, glucose and lipid profiles on female over male schizophrenic patients. Discussion Our findings fill the gap in knowledge and provide a sex-specific guidance to psychiatrist better tailoring treatment to individual sex-differential characteristics and a key clue to understand the sex-differential mechanism of antipsychotics-induced metabolic dysfunction.

Resumo: This study investigated the existence of difference of fat deposition and lipid metabolism in horses with different races and skills that were used for the same kind of sport. 20 Purebred Arabian and 20 Thoroughbred horses trained for flat race were evaluated. The analyses performed were body condition score, weight and blood collected for determination of triglycerides, total cholesterol and non-esterified fatty acids. Ultrasonography of the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer was performed on the Longissimus dorsi muscle between the 17th and 18th rib, the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer on the Gluteus medius muscle using the acetabulum as reference, and the cross section of the same muscle. Race-trained Arabian horses showed greater fat layer deposition in the Gluteus medius and Longissimus dorsei muscles than Thoroughbred horses. These facts indicate that there is a metabolic difference, besides the phenotype, between the races. They also indicate the need to study specific physical conditioning programs for each kind of race.(AU)

Título: Effect of synthetic and natural media on lipid production from Fusarium oxysporum
Fonte: Electron. j. biotechnol;30:95-102, nov. 2017. tab, graf.
Idioma: en.
Resumo: Background: Dependence on fossil resources, for the production of fuels and energy, has resulted in environmental and financial problems, which require our immediate action in order to reverse the situation. Use of renewable sources for the production of fuels and energy is an important alternative with biodiesel remains as one of the promising options. Aim of this work is to evaluate the fungus Fusarium oxysporum for its potentials to accumulate microbial lipids when grown on synthetic media and saccharified sweet sorghum stalks. Results: The effect of different carbon sources, nitrogen sources and C/N ratio on the lipid production was initially examined, which resulted in a lipid concentration of 4.4 g/L, with lipid content of 42.6% w/w. Sweet sorghum stalks were able to support growth and lipid production of the fungus, both as carbon source and as nitrogen source. It was also shown that saccharification of the dried stalks is an important step to increase lipid production. Removal of the remaining stalk solids enabled the lipid production during cultivation in increased initial solids of up to 16 w/w. This resulted in a lipid production of 3.81 g/L. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that F. oxysporum can be used as an efficient oleaginous microorganism, with sweet sorghum serving as an excellent raw material for the cultivation of the fungus. The lipids obtained during this work were also found to have a fatty acid profile with good potentials to be used for biodiesel production.

The HIV epidemic is a public health problem at worldwide. The morbidity and mortality associated with AIDS have change in a significant way with the use of anti-retroviral therapy. However, it has been affected by the changes provoked in the lipoprotein metabolism, which are characterized by a rise of the very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels and triglycerides, an increase of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HIV-infection associated with other inflammatory factors, is a progression model of atherosclerosis. The proatherogenic lipid profile in HIV/AIDS persons is a high risk for the development of the coronary disease. In present paper we analyzed the contribution of both the HIV-infection and the antiretroviral therapy effect on the lipid metabolism and its therapeutical procedure(AU)

Título: Resistencia a la insulina y cambios metabólicos en adultos obesos / Insulin resistance and metabolic changes in obese adults
Fonte: Rev. cuba. endocrinol;22(2):78-90, Mayo.-ago. 2011.

Introduction: the relation obesity-insulin resistance-diabetes mellitus-high blood pressure is more and more significant due to the more relevant role of obesity in the development of each of them. The obese persons are about the 20 to 30 percent of Cuban population and this disease or pathologic condition every day is a more important health problem. Objective: an observational study was conducted in obese adult subjects of both sexes aged between 18 and 60, seen in the National Institute of Endocrinology from 2006 to 2008. In present study also were included those subjects apparently healthy, with a normal height, selected from health institutions of primary care of Plaza municipality. All subjects (N= 214) were classified in 4 groups: body mass index (BMI) between 18,5 and 24,9), pre-obese I (BMI between 25 and 29,9), obese grade II (BMI from 30 to 34,9), obese grade III (BMI between 35 and 39,9). As well as the clinical examination and anthropometric measurements, a fasting blood sample was taught to determine the following serum analytes: glycemia, insulin, to total cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine and uric acid. Also, the insulin resistance was measured from glycemia and the insulinemia figure according HOMA index. Results: there was a significant association between abdominal circumference and the body mass index with the insulin resistance rate. Also, this showed a significant correlation (p< 0,05) with the uric acid figure in plasma. It was noted the as the body mass index was greater there were significant increases mean values in glucose plasma, insulin, triglycerides, total cholesterol, creatinine and uric acid. Conclusion: according to a progression in obesity there are significant metabolic changes in glucidic and lipid metabolism and also in some nitrogenous compounds like the creatinine and uric acid(AU)

Influence of avocado (Persea americana) pulp consumption on lipid metabolism in normolipidemic and diet induced hyperlipidemic mice . Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, a major cause of deaths worldwide. The aim of this work is to study the effect of avocado (Persea americana), on lipid metabolism on normolipidemic and hyperlipidemic mice induced with high fat diet. Four groups of animals receiving standard diet (DE), standard and avocado diet (DEa), high fat diet (DH) and high fat and avocado diet (DHA) were used. All animals were observed for a period of 28 days. Blood sample was obtained at the end of experimentation period by cardiac puncture on anesthetized animals, and the levels of Cholesterol, triglycerides and col-HDL were de- termined and c-LDL, VLDL and atherogenic and coronary risk factors were calculated. DH group showed levels of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL significantly higher (p<0,001) than the values achieved in DHa group. DHa and DEa plasmatic values of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL were significantly reduced (p <0.001) compared to DH group. DEa and DHA groups differed significantly (p <0.005) in the level of CT, the latter has lower values, the other quantified parameters showed no significant differences. There were no significant differences for c-HDL values in any group. Hyperlipidemia induction with a model of high fat diet produced significantly increasing values of TC, TG, c-LDL and VLDL, besides of increasing the atherogenic risk. The benefit of avocado pulp consists in reduction of TC, TG, c-LDL, VLDL and the index of atherogenic risk(AU)

Introduction: Evidence suggests that testosterone participates in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Objective: determine the relationship between testosterone levels and insulin sensitivity, adiposity and metabolism parameters in men. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted of 225 men aged 35-60 with and without glucose tolerance disorders. The variables measured were height, weight, and waist and hip circumference. Determinations were made for insulin, glycemia, testosterone, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Insulin sensitivity and resistance were also determined. Results: a negative correlation was found between testosterone levels/insulin resistance and the adiposity parameters considered (body mass index, waist and hip circumference and waist to hip ratio). Testosterone levels were lower in subjects with hypertriglyceridemia. Patients with tolerance disorders showed a significant increase in the frequency of abdominal obesity in the presence of low testosterone values. Conclusions: a direct relationship was found between testosterone levels and insulin sensitivity in the population studied. Reduced testosterone levels in the presence of disorders associated to metabolic syndrome suggest the need for an early metabolic assessment of patients with hypogonadism(AU)

Diverse bioactive compounds of foods have been used in the alternative treatment of diabetes mellitus. Pomegranate juice has a high content of phenolic compounds to which biological properties are attributed as lipid-lowering, hypoglycemic and protective of pancreatic tissue. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of free access of pomegranate juice on the levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and the integrity of pancreatic tissue in vivo. Eighteen male Wistar rats were induced to hyperglycemia with 60 mg streptozotocin/kg of body weight intraperitoneal (IP). Three experimental groups were formed. The HS group exposed to sucrose solution, the HJG group exposed to pomegranate juice and the HSI group exposed to sucrose solution and insulin treatment. The results showed that the rats of the HJG group consumed pomegranate juice for 21 days, which resulted in the reduction of glucose levels from its initial value of 417 to 356 mg/dL, not significantly (p>0.05). Lipid levels showed a non-significant reduction at the end of the intervention (p>0.05). The histological study of the pancreas in the HJG group showed conservation of the pancreatic architecture and the presence of islets of Langerhans; while the HS group showed extensive pancreatic necrosis and the HSI group showed intermediate damage with few islets of Langerhans. It is suggested that pomegranate juice has hypoglycaemic effects and protects pancreatic tissue in induced hyperglycemic rats(AU)
