After 200 years of informal anatomical science education in Chile, the anatomy studies program of the Spanish Royal University of San Felipe (1758), is passed on to Chile's National Institute in the year 1833. Subsequently in 1842, the studies program is transferred to the current Universidad de Chile, and following the percepts of Spanish Medicine, records indicate the development of this discipline was carried out under wretched conditions, that included serious risks associated with infections and injuries during practices. There is also reference to the origin of the first corpses used in education between the year 1842, when the University was established, and 1920, the year in which the Institute of Anatomy moved to its present location. During this initial period, our professors were of French origin, which was followed by German influence, and later featured North American influence. Therefore, the objective of this work is to describe the continuity of Human Anatomy teachings, currently reliant on the Universidad de Chile. This being the oldest educational institution in the country, it constitutes the origin and alma mater of many anatomists, who will be responsible for the teaching and instruction of anatomy in the rest of the country.

Título: What do people do before going to the dentist? qualitative study of cultural practices of pain relief in primary care
Fonte: J. oral res. (Impresa);7(8):363-371, nov. 30, 2018. ilus, tab.
Idioma: en.
Resumo: Objective: to describe and classify the main cultural practices used to relieve orodental pain in people who seek emergency dental care in vulnerable urban and rural areas of central Chile. methodology: a sample of 88 adults residing in urban and rural sectors, who received treatment at primary care emergency dental services in three districts of the central area of Chile was studied using a qualitative descriptive approach of sociocultural epidemiological orientation based on grounded theory. interviews were conducted in the waiting room of the emergency service or at the patient's home. empirical saturation and triangulation of temporal data were protected. results: practices of biomedical origin (self-medication and care received at dental emergency services) and socio-cultural practices were documented. they include the use of chemical products (iodine, phosphorus, battery acid, hydrogen peroxide, gasoline, and alcoholic drinks, among others), herbal infusions (buddleja globosa, aloe vera), mechanical-physical techniques (use of cold or heat, massage); subjects also perform the mechanical manipulation of the area with sharp objects, occasionally extracting the tooth itself. practices occur more frequently at home when the person feels the pain in the affected area, and end on the dental chair with the tooth extraction. conclusions: the coexistence of biomedical practices and alternative cultural strategies was observed. these practices complement each other and make people postpone seeking professional dental care, which may worsen their health condition.

Se evaluó 8 participantes utilizando los test Timed Up and Go (TUG), Gait Speed (GS), Sharpened Romberg (SR) y la escala Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS).

Introduction. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder of aging and the most common movement disorder. In Chile, there is a total of 17,574,003 inhabitants, where 11.4% of the total population is older adult, and approximately 1-2% of the population of 65 years lives with PD, a figure that rises to 3-5% in those over 85 years old. Within the alterations of the movement that it generates, disorders of the gait and falls are described, affecting the quality of life of the patients, therefore, it is fundamental to generate strategies that combat these alterations. Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of a sensorimotor training plan to improve balance, walking and quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease in the city of Valdivia. Methods: Quasi-experimental study with pre-post measurement after 18 sessions of sensorimotor training of 45 minutes, 3 times a week on nonconsecutive days, for 6 weeks. Eight 2 participants were evaluated using the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Gait Speed (GS), Sharpened Romberg (SR) and the escalation of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Classification Scale (UPDRS). Results: A significant improvement was obtained in the TUG and GS tests, with a percentage of change of 32.1% and 84.61% respectively, decrease of compensations in SR test and decrease of 2 points in the UPDRS. Conclusion: Short-term sensorimotor training in the short term achieved significant improvement in variables of balance, ambulation and quality of life(AU)

Título: Relación entre implicación laboral y satisfacción del trabajador en colegios de una provincia de Chile / Relationship between job involvement and satisfaction of workers in schools of a province in Chile
Fonte: Salud trab. (Maracay);25(1):52-62, jun. 2017. tab.

The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between job involvement and worker satisfaction in subsidized private schools in a province of Chile. A convenience sample of 169 workers was recruited, and completed a three-part questionnaire: a) General information; b) Spanish translation of Gonzalez & De Elena´s (1999) job involvement questionnaire; and c) job satisfaction questionnaire developed and validated by Chiang, Salazar, Huerta & Nuñez (2008), Chiang, Salazar, Martín & Núñez (2011) and Chiang, Gómez & Salazar (2014). Results showed that the job involvement dimension "performance-self esteem contingencies "exhibited a positive and statistically significant correlation (low levels) with nine of the ten dimensions of job satisfaction, except for "satisfaction with pay". The "psychological identification with the job", had a positive and statistically significant correlation (low levels), with all dimensions of job satisfaction except the "satisfaction with development opportunity". Finally, the job-involvement dimension "feelings of duty-obligation to work" was significantly and inversely correlated with all dimensions of job satisfaction. We conclude that workers with a high degree of job involvement identify strongly with their job, as it represents a fundamental part of his life; his performance within the organization affects his self-esteem in such a way, and a low performance means a decrease in his job satisfaction and vice versa(AU)

Resumo: Background Self-reported health is subjective and depends on external factors such as socioeconomic status, presence of chronic diseases and working status, among others. Aim To determine which factors influence self-reported health among older people in Chile. Material and Methods A secondary analysis of the National Socioeconomic Characterization survey done in 2015. A dichotomous response model was used classifying health status as good or bad. A logit regression model was carried out. Results The model had a good calibration and correctly classified 72 and 68% of men and women, respectively. The main factors that influenced health status self-perception were: not having health problems; having undergone a mental health interview, to receive supplemental nutrition, education, to have a productive work; and to having a social network. Conclusions There are health, cultural, economic and environmental factors that influence self-perceived health status.

Resumo: BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is the most common tumor of the biliary tract. The incidence of GBC shows a large geographic variability, being particularly frequent in Native American populations. In Chile, GBC represents the second cause of cancer-related death among women. We describe here the establishment of three novel cell lines derived from the ascitic fluid of a Chilean GBC patient, who presented 46% European, 36% Mapuche, 12% Aymara and 6% African ancestry. RESULTS: After immunocytochemical staining of the primary cell culture, we isolated and comprehensively characterized three independent clones (PUC-GBC1, PUC-GBC2 and PUC-GBC3) by short tandem repeat DNA profiling and RNA sequencing as well as karyotype, doubling time, chemosensitivity, in vitro migration capability and in vivo tumorigenicity assay. Primary culture cells showed high expression of CK7, CK19, CA 19-9, MUC1 and MUC16, and negative expression of mesothelial markers. The three isolated clones displayed an epithelial phenotype and an abnormal structure and number of chromosomes. RNA sequencing confirmed the increased expression of cytokeratin and mucin genes, and also of TP53 and ERBB2 with some differences among the three cells lines, and revealed a novel exonic mutation in NF1. The PUC-GBC3 clone was the most aggressive according to histopathological features and the tumorigenic capacity in NSG mice. CONCLUSIONS: The first cell lines established from a Chilean GBC patient represent a new model for studying GBC in patients of Native American descent.
