[Ab] Resumo:Background: Dietary patterns (DPs) are defined as the amounts, types and combinations of various food products in habitual diets and the frequency of their consumption. Dietary pattern analysis is usually performed in order to assess the combined effect of consumed food products on health Objective: The aim of the study was to assess and compare the nutritional value of dietary patterns identified in a group of patients staying on the oncological ward Material and methods: The study group consisted of 100 patients (51 women and 49 men) aged 19-83 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) validated for the population of Lower Silesian Voivodeship Results: Factor analysis identified two main dietary patterns explaining 25.6% of variance. The "fruit and vegetables" DP consisted of vegetables, fruits, juices, unrefined grains and nuts, seeds and raisins. Instead, the "Western" DP was characterized by the consumption of high-fat and processed meat and poultry, fried fish, refined grains, honey and sugar, fats, sweets, beverages and chips. While higher scores for "fruit and vegetables" pattern were associated with increased intake of dietary fiber, antioxidant vitamins, folic acid and decreased glycemic load per 1000 kcal and sodium intake, for "Western" pattern observed relationships were opposite. Women were more likely to have higher factor scores for "fruit and vegetables" DP and lower factor scores for "Western" DP than men Conclusions: Dietary patterns identified in the study group differed in terms of nutritional value, in spite of similar macronutrient content in the diet. "Western" DP was characterized by lower nutritional value than "fruit and vegetables" dietary pattern.

[Ab] Resumo:Gardeniae Fructus is a widely used Traditional Chinese Medicines in treating various diseases. However, the absorbed components and metabolites of its main bioactive iridoid ingredients from iridoid extract of the fruits of Gardeniae Fructus in rat plasma need further study. In this study, a systematic method based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) technique was developed to speculate the absorbed components and metabolites of iridoid extract in rat plasma after oral administration. A total of 19 compounds, including 9 prototype components and 10 metabolites were identified in plasma. 5 metabolites containing 4 new metabolites (M1, M2, M7, M10) were tentatively determined in rat plasma. Besides, Microdialysis-intensity-fading mass spectrometry (MD-IF-MS) method was originally employed to reveal the binding affinities with α-glucosidase for in-vivo prototype components and their metabolites. Finally, the absorbed constituents and the corresponding target proteins were used to generate compound-target network to find the related diseases and action pathways by a network pharmacology method. The results provide useful information for further study of pharmacology and in vivo mechanism of action of iridoid extract from the fruits of Gardeniae Fructus.

[Ab] Resumo:In the present study, a liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method with a minimal matrix effect (ME) was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of a diverse range of pesticides (49) in kiwifruit. Samples extracted by the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) citrate-buffered method were analyzed either without purification or following purification (with primary secondary amine (PSA) or PSA + graphitized carbon black (GCB)). With the addition of a clean-up step, the suppression of the ME decreased, with a higher number of pesticides determined by the application of PSA + GCB. The method exhibited good linearity with coefficients of determination (R ) ≥ 0.9972 and satisfactory recoveries (70-120%) with a relative standard deviations (RSDs) <10%. The limits of quantification (LOQ) were lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and the CODEX Alimentarius. The developed method was applied to the real samples and the results indicated that the quantitated levels of all pesticides, except for pyraclostrobin and carbendazim, are lower than the MRLs set by the regulatory authorities. The percentage of the acceptable daily intake was <20%, suggesting that there is no risk associated with the intake of residual pesticides through kiwifruit.

[Ab] Resumo:Background: Observational studies suggest that diet may influence pancreatic cancer risk. We investigated the effect of a low-fat dietary intervention on pancreatic cancer incidence. Methods: The Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification (WHI-DM) trial is a randomized controlled trial conducted in 48 835 postmenopausal women age 50 to 79 years in the United States between 1993 and 1998. Women were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 19 541), with the goal of reducing total fat intake and increasing intake of vegetables, fruits, and grains, or to the usual diet comparison group (n = 29 294). The intervention concluded in March 2005. We evaluated the effect of the intervention on pancreatic cancer incidence with the follow-up through 2014 using the log-rank test and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: In intention-to-treat analyses including 46 200 women, 92 vs 165 pancreatic cancer cases were ascertained in the intervention vs the comparison group (P = .23). The multivariable hazard ratio (HR) of pancreatic cancer was 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.67 to 1.11). Risk was statistically significantly reduced among women with baseline body mass indexes (BMIs) of 25 kg/m2 or higher (HR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.53 to 0.96), but not among women with BMIs of less than 25 kg/m2 (HR = 1.62, 95% CI = 0.97 to 2.71, Pinteraction = .01). Conclusions: A low-fat dietary intervention was associated with reduced pancreatic cancer incidence in women who were overweight or obese in the WHI-DM trial. Caution needs to be taken in interpreting the findings based on subgroup analyses.

[Ab] Resumo:Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an established model for studying fruit biology; however, most studies of tomato fruit growth and ripening are based on homogenized pericarp, and do not consider the internal tissues, or the expression signatures of individual cell and tissue types. We present a spatiotemporally resolved transcriptome analysis of tomato fruit ontogeny, using laser microdissection (LM) or hand dissection coupled with RNA-Seq analysis. Regulatory and structural gene networks, including families of transcription factors and hormone synthesis and signaling pathways, are defined across tissue and developmental spectra. The ripening program is revealed as comprising gradients of gene expression, initiating in internal tissues then radiating outward, and basipetally along a latitudinal axis. We also identify spatial variations in the patterns of epigenetic control superimposed on ripening gradients. Functional studies elucidate previously masked regulatory phenomena and relationships, including those associated with fruit quality traits, such as texture, color, aroma, and metabolite profiles.

[Ab] Resumo:Grape canes, the residues from the annual pruning of vines, contain high levels of inducible (E)-resveratrol and also oligomeric stilbenoids and proanthocyanidins. These two families of phenolic compounds are bioactive, but to quantify them in a single chromatographic run using only ultraviolet detection is a difficult task. To overcome this limitation, a chromatographic method was developed using a core shell column for separation, an ultraviolet-visible diode array detector (DAD) and a fluorescence (FL) detector connected in series for quantification, with an electrospray ionization interface (ESI) and a triple quadrupole mass spectrometric detector (MS/MS) added for identification of the analytes. The proanthocyanidins (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, procyanidins B1, B2, and C1, an unknown dimer and trimer, two prodelphinidin dimers, and monogallate procyanidin dimers were detected in the tested grape cane samples. The stilbenoids detected were (E)-resveratrol, (E)-piceatannol, (E)-piceid, (E)-ε-viniferin, vitisin B, a glycosylated monomer, three oxidized dimers, an unknown dimer and a tetramer, pallidol, hopeaphenol, (E)-δ-viniferin, and (E)-ω-viniferin. However, this method required 60min for each analysis. A faster and more efficient method for quantitative analysis was developed based on HPLC-DAD-FL, reducing the time required to 24min for the simultaneous quantification of proanthocyanidins and stilbenoids in Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Tintorera grape canes stored at controlled temperatures and relativity humidities for 134days after pruning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a prodelphinidin dimer has been quantified in grape canes. The incorporation of fluorescence detection in series with DAD not only allowed the quantification of proanthocyanidins, it also improved the detectability of some minor stilbenoids present in the canes, such as (E)-piceid. The (E)-resveratrol and (E)-piceatannol levels increased significantly during cane storage, while those of (E)-ε-viniferin and ampelopsin A did not show significant increases. The relative humidity had a determining effect on the levels of (E)-resveratrol and (E)-piceatannol in the canes of all varieties studied; their concentrations were higher at a relative humidity of 60% than at 70%. This is the first time that the proanthocyanidin profiles of canes stored after pruning were monitored under controlled conditions of temperature, time and relative humidity. The concentration of (-)-epicatechin decreased during storage under both relative humidities. Furthermore, the levels of proanthocyanidin B1 and the prodelphinidin dimer also decreased to a certain extent.

[Ab] Resumo:Delottococcus aberiae De Lotto (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is the latest exotic mealybug species introduced in citrus in the Mediterranean basin. It causes severe distortion and size reduction on developing fruits. Due to its first interaction with citrus, D. aberiae economic thresholds are still unknown for this crop and the current Integrated Pest Management programs have been disrupted. The objectives of this study were to determine the aggregation patterns of D. aberiae in citrus, develop an efficient sampling plan to assess its population density, and calculate its Economic and Economic Environmental Injury Levels (EIL and EEIL, respectively). Twelve and 19 orchards were sampled in 2014 and 2015, respectively. At each orchard, population densities were monitored fortnightly in leaves, twigs, and fruit, and fruit damage was determined at harvest. Our results showed a clumped aggregation of D. aberiae in all organs with no significant differences between generations on fruit. Fruit damage at harvest was strongly correlated with fruit occupation in spring. Based on these results and using chlorpyrifos as the insecticide of reference, the EIL and EEIL were calculated as 7.1 and 12.1% of occupied fruit in spring, respectively. With all this, we recommend sampling 275 fruits using a binomial sampling method or alternatively, 140 fruits with an enumerative method bimonthly between petal fall and July.

[Ab] Resumo:The nearly cosmopolitan tribe Desmodieae (Fabaceae) includes many important genera for medicine and forage. However, the phylogenetic relationships among the infratribal groups circumscribed using morphological traits are still poorly known. In this study, we used chloroplast (rbcL, psbA-trnH) and nuclear (ITS-1) DNA sequences to investigate the molecular phylogeny and historical biogeography of Desmodieae, and infer ancestral states for several vegetative and reproductive traits. Three groups, corresponding to the Desmodium, Lespedeza, and Phyllodium groups sensu Ohashi were retrieved in the phylogenetic analyses. Conflicts in the topologies inferred from the chloroplast and nuclear datasets were detected. For instance, the Lespedeza clade was sister to the groups Phyllodium+Desmodium based on chloroplast DNA, but nested within the Desmodium group based on ITS-1. Moreover, the New Caledonian endemic genera Arthroclianthus and Nephrodesmus were not monophyletic but together formed a clade, which also included Hanslia and Ohwia based on chloroplast DNA. The hypothetical common ancestor of Desmodieae was dated to the Middle Oligocene (ca. 28.3Ma) and was likely an Asian shrub or tree producing indehiscent loments. Several colonization events towards Oceania, America, and Africa occurred (all less than ca. 17.5Ma), most probably through long distance dispersal. The fruits of Desmodieae repeatedly evolved from indehiscence to dehiscence. We also showed that indehiscent loments allow for more variability in the number of seeds per fruit than indehiscent legumes. Modularity seems here to allow variability in the number of ovules produced in a single ovary.

[Ab] Resumo:In the Perm Territory from 2010 to 2014 155 samples offoul andfecal waste waters, 293 samples of surface water, 827 samples of supply net water, and 57 vegetable and fruit water-washes were examined for the RNA enterovirus agent with the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. In parallel 155 wastewater samples, 20 samples of surface water, and 4 samples of supply net water were examined for non-polio enterovirus agent with the use of virological methods. In the samples of foul waste waters the RNA enterovirus agent was detected in 74.8 ± 3.4%, and nonpolio enterovirus agent - in 65.1 ± 3.8%. In the samples of surface water the RNA enterovirus agent was detected in 2.3 ± 0.8%; in the area offoul and fecal waste waters the non-polio enterovirus agent was detected in 20.0 ± 4.4% in the process of virological investigation of RNA-positive water samples. In supply net water the RNA enterovirus agent was detected in 0.8 ± 0.3 %, on the surface of vegetables, fruits, and grapes - in 10.5 ± 3.9 %.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables in childhood increases the risk of future chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness, cost effectiveness and associated adverse events of interventions designed to increase the consumption of fruit, vegetables or both amongst children aged five years and under. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and Embase to identify eligible trials on 25 September 2017. We searched Proquest Dissertations and Theses and two clinical trial registers in November 2017. We reviewed reference lists of included trials and handsearched three international nutrition journals. We contacted authors of included studies to identify further potentially relevant trials. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials, including cluster-randomised controlled trials and cross-over trials, of any intervention primarily targeting consumption of fruit, vegetables or both among children aged five years and under, and incorporating a dietary or biochemical assessment of fruit or vegetable consumption. Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts of identified papers; a third review author resolved disagreements. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently extracted data and assessed the risks of bias of included studies; a third review author resolved disagreements. Due to unexplained heterogeneity, we used random-effects models in meta-analyses for the primary review outcomes where we identified sufficient trials. We calculated standardised mean differences (SMDs) to account for the heterogeneity of fruit and vegetable consumption measures. We conducted assessments of risks of bias and evaluated the quality of evidence (GRADE approach) using Cochrane procedures. MAIN RESULTS: We included 55 trials with 154 trial arms and 11,108 participants. Thirty-three trials examined the impact of child-feeding practices (e.g. repeated food exposure) in increasing child vegetable intake. Thirteen trials examined the impact of parent nutrition education in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake. Eight studies examined the impact of multicomponent interventions (e.g. parent nutrition education and preschool policy changes) in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake. One study examined the effect of a nutrition intervention delivered to children in increasing child fruit and vegetable intake.We judged 14 of the 55 included trials as free from high risks of bias across all domains; performance, detection and attrition bias were the most common domains judged at high risk of bias for the remaining studies.Meta-analysis of trials examining child-feeding practices versus no intervention revealed a positive effect on child vegetable consumption (SMD 0.38, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.15 to 0.61; n = 1509; 11 studies; very low-quality evidence), equivalent to a mean difference of 4.03 g of vegetables. There were no short-term differences in child consumption of fruit and vegetables in meta-analyses of trials examining parent nutrition education versus no intervention (SMD 0.11, 95% CI -0.05 to 0.28; n = 3023; 10 studies; very low-quality evidence) or multicomponent interventions versus no intervention (SMD 0.28, 95% CI -0.06 to 0.63; n = 1861; 4 studies; very low-quality evidence).Insufficient data were available to assess long-term effectiveness, cost effectiveness and unintended adverse consequences of interventions. Studies reported receiving governmental or charitable funds, except for three studies reporting industry funding. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Despite identifying 55 eligible trials of various intervention approaches, the evidence for how to increase children's fruit and vegetable consumption remains sparse. There was very low-quality evidence that child-feeding practice interventions are effective in increasing vegetable consumption in children aged five years and younger, however the effect size was very small and long-term follow-up is required. There was very low-quality evidence that parent nutrition education and multicomponent interventions are not effective in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in children aged five years and younger. All findings should be considered with caution, given most included trials could not be combined in meta-analyses. Given the very low-quality evidence, future research will very likely change estimates and conclusions. Such research should adopt more rigorous methods to advance the field.This is a living systematic review.
