[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND/AIM: Due to their unique composition of health-promoting compounds, the consumption of hazelnuts may contribute to the prevention of colon cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since hazelnuts are often consumed roasted, the impact of different roasting conditions (RC1=140.6°C/25 min, RC2=155.1°C/20 min and RC3=180.4°C/21 min) on chemopreventive effects of in vitro fermented hazelnuts was analyzed in LT97 colon adenoma cells. RESULTS: FS (2.5%) of raw and roasted hazelnuts reduced H O -induced DNA damage while 5% FS significantly induced gene expression of SOD2 (3.0-fold) and GSTP1 (2.1-fold). GPx1 mRNA levels were significantly decreased (0.6-fold) by FS (2.5%). The growth of LT97 cells was significantly reduced by hazelnut FS in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Hazelnut FS (5%) increased the numbers of early apoptotic cells (9.6% on average) and caspase-3 activities (6.4-fold on average). CONCLUSION: These results indicate a chemopreventive potential of in vitro fermented hazelnuts which is largely unaffected by the roasting process.

[Ab] Resumo:The Mikomya coryli (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is widespread in Europe and the most important cecidomyiid pest of hazelnut. Within-plant distribution, susceptibility of 18 Turkish hazelnut cultivars ('Aci,' 'Allahverdi,' 'Çakildak,' 'Cavcava,' 'Fosa,' 'Incekara,' 'Kalinkara,' 'Kan,' 'Karafindik,' 'Kargalak,' 'Kus,' 'Mincane,' 'Palaz,' 'Sivri,' 'Tombul,' 'Uzunmusa,' 'Yassi Badem,' and 'Yuvarlak Badem'), and the phenology of larvae of this pest in hazelnut leaves and involucres were assessed in 2014 and 2015 in Giresun (Turkey). Mikomya coryli distribution differed significantly within different parts of the hazelnut plant. The highest gall numbers of M. coryli were found in the middle part (0.70-1.40 m) of the plant in both years. Total gall numbers varied between years: 1,779 and 2,588 galls were counted in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Susceptibility to M. coryli damage varied significantly among the cultivars. The highest leaf gall densities and total numbers of galls were found on leaves and involucres of Allahverdi, Yuvaklak Badem, and Yassi Badem cultivars in both years. Mikomya coryli larvae were detected between April and June in the leaf galls. The number of larvae in the involucres changed between April and mid-June. Results of the within-plant distribution, M. coryli larval phenology, and cultivar pest-susceptibility analyses are presented to enable effective control of the pest as a part of hazelnut integrated pest management.

[Ab] Resumo:For the first time, the exploitation of hazelnut shells for the combined production of levulinic acid (LA) and hydrochar was investigated. The optimization of the catalytic hydrothermal treatment was performed both in autoclave and microwave reactor, approaching a maximum LA yield of ∼9-12wt%. Hydrochars recovered with high yield (∼43-47wt%) were characterized by different techniques, including elemental and proximate analysis, heating value, FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM-EDX, and SAA. Their "lignite-like" energetic properties make them suitable for the energy recovery within the same biorefinery plant for LA production, thus partially offsetting the cost of the entire process. Alternatively, since the synthesized hydrochars maintain high levels of oxygenated groups, they could be smartly exploited as natural sorbents for environmental applications. The proposed integrated approach makes possible to fully exploit this waste, smartly closing its biorefinery cycle in a sustainable development perspective.

[Ab] Resumo:Municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and hazelnut shell were used for co-pyrolysis by chemical activation with ZnCl . The surface characteristics and potential ecological risk evaluation of heavy metals in the bio-char produced by co-pyrolysis were analyzed by surface analyzer and BCR sequential extraction. When raw materials with ZnCl (3mol/L) were co-pyrolyzed at 500°C for 90min, specific surface area of the bio-char is 598.73m /g, and iodine absorption number is 607.85mg/g. For microcosmic surface of the bio-char, the ratio of micropore area is stabilized from 0.74 to 0.80 of the total specific surface area, and hazelnut shell is effective to generate microporous construction. For the migration and transformation behavior of heavy metals, pyrolysis promoted mobile fraction (F1 and F2) to stable fraction (F3 and F4) with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals transforms from considerable risk to low risk after pyrolysis at 500°C.

[Ab] Resumo:The aim of this investigation was the study of lipids from the fruits of usual hazel-nut Corylus avellana L, growing in Georgia. Ripe fruits was collected in the West Georgia, just in Imereti. From the powdered fruits was obtained the sums of neutral and pollar lipids. Qualitatively there were established classes entered in them. By using High performance liquid chromatography qualitatively and quantitatively were identified ten fatty acids, which time of deduction hesitate from 4,01 min to 13,00 min. By the analyses there were determined unsaturated fatty acids C12:0 to C24:0. The content of unsaturated fatty acids considerably is distinquished from the content of the oil from the hazel-nut, growing in the other eco-geographical conditions. In the oil of the hazel-nut growing in Georgia content of hexadecanoic acid is by far exceled (surpassed) than of the oil from the nut growing in the other natural conditions. In the other matters dominant acid is octadecanoic acid. The oil from the fruits of hazel-nut content physiologically active compounds, which desirably correlation is interesting not only for receiving (obtaining) cosmetic means, not is important for usage in practical medicine.

[Ab] Resumo:Plant genomes are now sequenced rapidly and inexpensively. In silico approaches allow efficient development of simple sequence repeat markers, also known as microsatellite markers, from these sequences. A search of the genome sequence of 'Jefferson' hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) identified 8,708 tri-nucleotide simple sequence repeats with at least five repeat units, and stepwise removal of the less promising sequences led to the development of 150 polymorphic markers. Fragments in the 'Jefferson' sequence containing tri-nucleotide repeats were used as references and aligned with genomic sequences from seven other cultivars. Following in silico alignment, sequences that showed variation in number of repeat units were selected and primer pairs were designed for 243 of them. Screening on agarose gels identified 173 as polymorphic. Removal of duplicate and previously published sequences reduced the number to 150, for which fluorescent primers and capillary electrophoresis were used for amplicon sizing. These were characterized using 50 diverse hazelnut accessions. Of the 150, 132 generated the expected one or two alleles per accession while 18 amplified more than two amplicons in at least one accession. Diversity parameters of the 132 marker loci averaged 4.73 for number of alleles, 0.51 for expected heterozygosity (He), 0.49 for observed heterozygosity (Ho), 0.46 for polymorphism information content (PIC), and 0.04 for frequency of null alleles. The clustering of the 50 accessions in a dendrogram constructed from the 150 markers confirmed the wide genetic diversity and presence of three of the four major geographic groups: Central European, Black Sea, and Spanish-Italian. In the mapping population, 105 loci segregated, of which 101 were assigned to a linkage group (LG), with positions well-dispersed across all 11 LGs. These new markers will be useful for cultivar fingerprinting, diversity studies, genome comparisons, mapping, and alignment of the linkage map with the genome sequence and physical map.

[Ab] Resumo:The methanol extract of the leafy covers of Corylus avellana, source of the Italian PGI (protected geographical indication) product "Nocciola di Giffoni", afforded two new cyclic diarylheptanoids, giffonins T and U (2 and 3), along with two known cyclic diarylheptanoids, a quinic acid, flavonoid-, and citric acid derivatives. The structures of giffonins T and U were determined as highly hydroxylated cyclic diarylheptanoids by 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Their relative configurations were assigned by a combined quantum mechanical/NMR approach, comparing the experimental C/ H NMR chemical shift data and the related predicted values. The absolute configurations of carpinontriol B (1) and giffonins T and U (2 and 3) were assigned by comparison of their experimental electronic circular dichroism curves with the TDDFT-predicted curves. The ability of the compounds to inhibit the lipid peroxidation induced by H O and H O /Fe was determined by measuring the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the methanol extract of leafy covers of C. avellana and of the isolated compounds against the Gram-positive strains Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus and the Gram-negative strains Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated. Carpinontriol B (1) and giffonin U (3) at 40 µg/disk caused the formation of zones of inhibition.

[Ab] Resumo:OBJECTIVE: Postprandial oxidative stress is characterized by an increased susceptibility of the organism towards oxidative damage after consumption of a meal rich in lipids and/or carbohydrates. Micronutrients modulate the immune system and exert a protective action by reducing low-density lipoproteins oxidation (ox-LDL) via induction of antioxidant enzymes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The clinical study was a randomized and cross-over trial, conducted through the CONSORT flowchart. We evaluated the gene expression of 103 genes related to oxidative stress (HOSp) and human inflammasome pathways (HIp), and ox-LDL level at fasting and after 40 g raw "Tonda Gentile delle Langhe" hazelnut consumption, in association with a McDonald's® Meal (McDM) in 22 healthy human volunteers. RESULTS: Ox-LDL levels significantly increased comparing no dietary treatment (NDT) vs. McDM, and decreased comparing McDM vs. McDM + H (p<0.05). Percentage of significant genes expressed after each dietary treatment were the follows: (A) NDT vs. McDM: 3.88% HIp and 17.48% HOSp; (B) NDT vs. McDM + H: 17.48% HIp and 23.30% HOSp; (C) McDM vs. McDM + H: 17.48% HIp and 33.98% HOSp. CONCLUSIONS: Hazelnut consumption reduced post prandial risk factors of atherosclerosis, such as ox-LDL, and the expression of inflammation and oxidative stress related genes. Chronic studies on larger population are necessary before definitive conclusions.

[Ab] Resumo:The filbert aphid Myzocallis coryli (Goeze) is a serious pest of hazelnut in North America, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. To evaluate the resistance of hazelnut to this insect, aphids were reared on five major cultivars ('Tombul,' 'Palaz,' 'Çakildak,' 'Fosa,' and 'Mincane') under laboratory conditions. The developmental times of preadult and adult stages, total longevity, reproduction, and life table parameters were analyzed according to age-stage, two-sex life table theory, in which the stage differentiation and variable developmental rates among individuals could be described. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (λ) varied among the cultivars. The highest values were found for aphids reared on Çakildak (r = 0.2019 d-1, λ = 1.2238 d-1), which did not differ significantly from Mincane (r = 0.1957 d-1, λ = 1.2161 d-1), whereas these parameters were lowest for Palaz (r = 0.1622 d-1, λ = 1.1761 d-1) and Fosa (r = 0.1677 d-1, λ = 1.1826 d-1). Based on longer preadult development time, shorter adult longevity, shorter reproductive period, together with the demographic parameters, Palaz and Fosa provide a relatively unfavorable environment for the filbert aphid. The results obtained from demographic data together with estimates of pest growth potential generated by computer projection based on age-stage, two-sex life table theory, demonstrate that both Palaz and Fosa are resistant cultivars for M. coryli and can be considered in hazelnut integrated pest management and hazelnut breeding programs.

[Ab] Resumo:The town of Bor and its surroundings (Serbia) have been under environmental pollution for more than a century, due to exploitation of large copper deposits. Naturally present Corylus spp. were sampled in the surroundings of the mine and flotation tailings at 12 sites distributed in six zones with different pollution loads, under the assumption that all the zones were endangered except for the background. As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn inputs from soil and the air were evaluated in plant parts, in terms of absorption, accumulation and indication abilities of Corylus spp. The obtained results showed that As and Cu were the most enriched elements in soil, and their concentration exceeded the limit and remediation values proposed by the regulation. Plant parts (root, branch, leaf and catkin) also showed enrichment of most studied elements in wide ranges. According to the enrichment factor for plant, metal/metalloid inputs, particularly in leaves, were from anthropogenic origin. Plant absorption which occurred at the soil-root interface was low, based on the bioaccumulation factor, which could be indicative of resistance mechanisms of root to abiotic stress induced by a high content of elements in soil substrate. The values of bioaccumulation coefficient suggested weak and intermediate absorption and exclusion abilities of Corylus spp. to the studied elements. Element concentrations differ in unwashed and washed leaves, as well as pollution loads in plant and soil samples from the background, traffic and the sites with clear mining-metallurgical influence. Therefore, Corylus spp. could be promising in biomonitoring studies.
