[Ab] Resumo:The aim of this work was to study the removal of Cu (II) and U (VI) ions from aqueous solutions by encapsulating magnetic Fe O nanoparticles into calcium alginate coated chitosan hydrochloride (CCM) hydrogel beads. ATR-FTIR and XRD analysis data indicated that the CCM composites were successfully prepared. SEM images and EDX spectra showed that Cu and UO ions were adhered onto sorbents. Adsorption properties for removal of both copper and uranium ions under various experimental conditions were investigated. Kinetic data and sorption equilibrium isotherms were also conducted in batch process. The sorption kinetic analysis revealed that sorption of Cu (II) and U (VI) followed the pseudo-second-order model well and exhibited 3-stage intraparticle diffusion model during the whole sorption process. Equilibrium data were best described by Langmuir model, and the CCM composite hydrogel beads showed the estimated maximum adsorption capacity 143.276mg/g and 392.692mg/g for Cu (II) and U (VI), respectively. The CCM adsorbent exhibited excellent reusability for five cycles use without significant changes in the adsorption capacity and structural stability. The results demonstrated that CCM can be an effective and promising sorbent for Cu (II) and U (VI) ions in wastewater.

[Ab] Resumo:This study investigated the adsorption characteristics of Copper (â…¡), Zinc (â…¡) and Mercury (â…¡) by immobilized Flammulina velutipes, Auricularia polytricha, Pleurotus eryngii and Pleurotus ostreatus residues. Lagergren model, elovich and intraparticle diffusion model were used to present the adsorption kinetics, and it was proved that Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second order kinetics are the best suitable model with high correlation coefficient to characterize the adsorption process of Copper (â…¡), Zinc (â…¡) and Mercury (â…¡). The results showed that adsorption process finished in 120min at pH 6.0. The adsorption rate of Cu , Zn and Hg were reached to 53.8-84.1% of total in the initial 60min, and finished in 120min. Ion exchange and complexation of F. velutipes were the main mechanisms for adsorption of metal ions by characterizations of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). In addition the functional group of cell walls such as hydroxyl, amide, carbonyl, phosphoric played a critical role in ions adsorption of edible mushroom residues. Cu , Zn and Hg in wastewater could be efficiently removed by F. velutipes residue with removal ratio of 73.11%, 66.67% and 69.35%, respectively.

[Ab] Resumo:Silkworm silk is an attractive biopolymer for biomedical applications due to its high mechanical strength and biocompatibility; as a result, there is increasing interest in scalable devices to spin silk and recombinant silk so as to improve and customize their properties for diverse biomedical purposes (Vepari and Kaplan 2007 Prog. Polym. Sci. 32 ). While artificial spinning of regenerated silk fibroins adds tunability to properties such as degradation rate and surface functionalization, the resulting fibers do not yet approach the mechanical strength of native silkworm silk. These drawbacks reduce the applicability and attractiveness of artificial silk (Kinahan et al 2011 Biomacromolecules 12 ). Here, we used computational fluid dynamic simulations to incorporate shear in tandem with biomimetic ion gradients by coupling a modular novel glass microfluidic device to our previous co-axial flow device. Fibers spun with this combined apparatus demonstrated a significant increase in mechanical strength compared to fibers spun with the basic apparatus alone, with a three-fold increase in Young's modulus and extensibility and a twelve-fold increase in toughness. These results thus demonstrate the critical importance of ionic milieu and shear stress in spinning strong fibers from solubilized silk fibroin.

[Ab] Resumo:In this study, we prepared calcium silicate at different molar ratios (Ca:Si=1:3, 1:6, and 1:9 refer to CAS-30S, CAS-60S, and CAS-90S, respectively) with water addition. The adsorbent characteristics (specific surface area, pore volume, mean pore diameter, and elemental analysis) were measured and the effect of water addition on the adsorbent surface for the prevention of deterioration was evaluated. In addition, the deterioration of soybean oil (SO) subjected to heating and aeration was investigated based on the acid value (AV) and carbonyl value (CV). The specific surface area increased in the order CAS-60S (160.51 m /g) < CAS-30S (182.61 m /g) < CAS-90S (204.19 m /g). Deterioration of SO could be induced by heating and aeration with AV and CV of 1.4 mg/g and 102.9 µmol/g, respectively. The adsorbent (CAS-30S and CAS-90S) with water addition (25% and 50%) was found to decrease the AV, indicating that a small amount of water addition to adsorbent surface is important for the decreasing of AV. In addition, the correlation between the decrease in AV and the specific surface area is strongly positive (R value: 0.968). The adsorption mechanism is thought to involve interactions between the polar compounds (free fatty acids) in the SO (nonaqueous phase) and the water layer (containing calcium ions released from the adsorbent) on the adsorbent surface. In summary, the data obtained in this study provide useful information for preventing the deterioration of SO and prolonging the oil life cycle.

[Ab] Resumo:An efficient method for rare metal recovery from environmental water and urban mines is in high demand. Toward rapid and high-resolution rare metal ion separation, a novel bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (HDEHP)-impregnated graft-type particle as a filler for a chromatography column is proposed. To achieve rapid and high-resolution separation, a convection-flow-aided elution mode is required. The combination of 35 µm non-porous particles and a polymer-brush-rich particle structure minimizes the distance from metal ion binding sites to the convection flow in the column, resulting in minimized diffusional mass transfer resistance and the convection-flow-aided elution mode. The HDEHP-impregnated graft-type non-porous-particle-packed cartridge developed in this study exhibited a higher separation performance for model rare metals, neodymium (III) and dysprosium (III) ions, and a narrower peak at a higher linear velocity, than those of previous HDEHP-impregnated fiber-packed and commercially available Lewatit VP OC 1026-packed cartridges.

[Ab] Resumo:Gas phase unimolecular fragmentation of the two model doubly protonated tripeptides threonine-isoleucine-lysine (TIK) and threonine-leucine-lysine (TLK) is studied using chemical dynamics simulations. Attention is focused on different aspects of collision induced dissociation (CID): fragmentation pathways, energy transfer, theoretical mass spectra, fragmentation mechanisms, and the possibility of distinguishing isoleucine (I) and leucine (L). Furthermore, discussion is given regarding the differences between single collision CID activation, which results from a localized impact between the ions and a colliding molecule N , and previous thermal activation simulation results; Z. Homayoon, S. Pratihar, E. Dratz, R. Snider, R. Spezia, G. L. Barnes, V. Macaluso, A. Martin-Somer and W. L. Hase, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2016, 120, 8211-8227. Upon thermal activation unimolecular fragmentation is statistical and in accord with RRKM unimolecular rate theory. Simulations show that in collisional activation some non-statistical fragmentation occurs, including shattering, which is not present when the ions dissociate statistically. Products formed by non-statistical shattering mechanisms may be related to characteristic mass spectrometry peaks which distinguish the two isomers I and L.

[Ab] Resumo:2-[(Neopentyl glycolato)boryl]phenyl triflates, readily synthesized from 2-iodophenol derivatives via halogen-magnesium exchange or Miyaura borylation, were developed as new benzyne precursors. Benzynes were generated under fluoride-ion-mediated conditions and reacted immediately with various arynophiles. Herein, we describe the generation of benzynes having reactive functional groups, such as methoxycarbonyl, acetyl, bromo, and amino groups, as well as their [4+2], (3+2), and [2+2] cycloaddition reactions which produce corresponding benzo-fused compounds.

[Ab] Resumo:Burmese Grape Leaf Extract (BGLE), a low cost adsorbent was studied for cadmium (Cd(II)) removal from metal solutions and natural water samples. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to examine the influence of contact time and initial metal concentration after characterization under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cd(II)adsorptiononto BGLE was best explained by pseudo-second order kinetics (R = 0.99) and best fitted with Langmuir isotherm model (R = 0.76). Beside the selective adsorption activity of BGLE towards Cd(II), only 0.1g of BGLE have shown effective adsorption of these ions with a maximum adsorption capacity (q ) of 44.72mgg . This study was a unique combination of laboratory experiments and field implication. Study indicates that same efficacy cannot be obtained in natural water samples as obtained in the case of laboratory due to the interference of major ions in water.

[Ab] Resumo:Cu(II) ion was selected as an additive to improve the enantioseparation efficiency of three dihydroflavone enantiomers in high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC), using hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CyD) as the chiral selector. The influences of important parameters, including the metal ion, the concentrations of HP-ß-CyD and the Cu(II) ion, and the sample size were investigated. Under optimal conditions, three dihydroflavone enantiomers, including (±)-hesperetin, (±)-naringenin, and (±)-farrerol, were successfully enantioseparated. The chiral recognition mechanism was investigated. The enantioseparation was attributed to the different thermodynamic stabilities of the binary complexes of HP-ß-CyD and (±)-hesperetin, and Cu(II) ion could enhance this difference by forming ternary complexes with the binary complexes. This Cu(II) ion-improved complexation HSCCC system exhibited improved performance for chiral separation, and therefore it has great application potential in the preparative enantioseparation of other compounds with similar skeletons.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: The understanding of the bioinorganic and coordination chemistry of metalloproteins containing unusual poly-Xaa sequences, in which a single amino acid is repeated consecutively, is crucial for describing their metal binding-structure-function relationship, and therefore also crucial for understanding their medicinal potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review on metal complexes with polyXaa sequences. METHODS: We performed a thorough search of high quality peer reviewed literature on poly-Xaa type of sequences in proteins, focusing on their biological importance and on their interactions with metal ions. RESULTS: 228 papers were included in the review. More than 70% of them discussed the role of metal complexes with the studied types of sequences. In this work, we showed numerous medically important and chemically fascinating examples of possible 'poly-Xaa' metal binding sequences. CONCLUSION: Poly-Xaa sequences, in which a single amino acid is repeated consecutively, are often not only tempting binding sites for metal ions, but very often, together with the bound metal, serve as structure determinants for entire proteins. This, in turn, can have consequences for the whole organism. Such sequences in bacterial metal chaperones can be a possible target for novel, antimicrobial therapeutics.
