[Ab] Resumo:We introduce a structurally reconfigurable metasurface which is made of shape memory alloys (SMA). It could change the morphology of the unit cells repeatedly as we expect in response to a thermal stimulus and realize a tuning range from 13.3GHz to 17.2GHz for both polarizations simultaneously. Equivalent circuit models describe the operational principle and design methodology, the physical mechanism is interpreted with the variation of surface current distribution on the structure. The experimental results coincide with the numerical simulations, making the all-metal metasurface an attractive choice for manipulating the electromagnetic wave in a wide range of spectrums with the merits of higher controllability for dynamic behavior and greater freedom for design and manufacturing.

[Ab] Resumo:RATIONALE: Thrombosis due to anastomotic site stenosis is the most common complication in patients with brachio-axillary arteriovenous graft (AVG). Intravascular stent placement may play a special role in the salvage of dialysis grafts that have been previously performed percutaneous angioplasty or surgical procedure on the graft. Herein, we applied a novel stent named Supera which has a high degree of flexibility and resistance to external compression for treating a patient with recurrent venous anastomotic stenosis of brachio-axillary AVG. PATIENTS CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We report a case of the patient with end-stage renal disease who presented with brachio-axillary AVG malfunction. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent repeated percutaneous angioplasty with thrombectomy for total graft occlusion, and we placed the Supera stent to salvage the graft. OUTCOMES: Postprocedural Doppler ultrasonography did not show any restenosis on the 1- and 3-month follow-up periods, and average flow volume in the stent was >1000 mL/min. And he has been on dialysis for 6 months without any problems after stent placement. LESSONS: The Supera stent is a useful treatment option of interventional procedure for recurrent venous anastomotic stenosis of brachio-axillary AVG in the clinical practice.

[Ab] Resumo:Adsorption of short peptides, including three dipeptides: arginine-glycine (Arg-Gly), glycine-aspartic acid (Gly-Asp), arginine-aspartic acid (Arg-Asp), and one tripeptide arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD), on the surfaces of Mg and Mg alloys (Mg-Zn, Mg-Y, and Mg-Nd), was studied using the first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), considering van der Waals (vdW) correction. The calculated adsorption energies (E ) of short peptides on the clean Mg(0001) surface are in the range of -1.73 to -2.80 eV per dipeptide, and -3.24 eV for RGD. The short peptides prefer to bond to Mg atoms at the surface by the O and N anions in their functional groups. For the clean Mg(0001) surface, the E of the short peptides are exclusively dominated by the number of functional groups binding to the surface. However, for the surface of the Mg-Zn alloy (1% Zn), the adsorption of the peptides is clearly enhanced (by about 0.3 eV per peptide) due to the enhanced N-Mg bond and the electrostatic interactions between the doped Zn at the surface and the backbone chains of the peptides. Furthermore, the attractive interactions are increased with the increase of doped Zn contents (up to 3%). In contrast, for the surfaces of Mg-Y (1% Y) and Mg-Nd (1% Nd) alloys, the adsorption of the peptides is slightly weakened compared to that on the clean Mg(0001) surfaces. Our results provide useful guidance in understanding the interactions between peptides and the Mg-based biomedical alloy surfaces at the atomic scale in the biomimetic coating fields.

[Ab] Resumo:IMPORTANCE: Long-term outcomes of an interwoven nitinol stent design represent the best in class for treatment of lower limb arterial obstructive disease METHODS: The subjects were enrolled in an open single arm study comparing the outcomes to an FDA mandated objective performance goal (OPG). RESULTS: About 325 patients (264 intention-to-treat and 64 roll-in subjects) were enrolled. Mean follow-up period was 887+/- 352 days. Treated lesion lengths were 7.8 cm ± 4.3 cm in the trial with chronic total occlusions comprising 24.6% (65/264) of subjects. Freedom from clinically driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) at 12 months was 89%, at 24 and 36 months it was 84% and 82% respectively. The difference in the 12 month CD-TLR was 7% at 36 months. The difference of clinically driven-TLR at 36 months in those subjects who received their stents deployed nominally in length, compressed or elongated (between -10% and +10% nominal length) had an impact on the CD-TLR. At 2 and 3 years, freedom from CD-TLR in minimal compression was 86.7%, and was 90.0% for moderate compression. In those stents deployed with minimal, moderate, or severe elongation (10-20%, 20-40%, or >40%, respectively) freedom from CD-TLR of 84.1%, 87.4%, and 77.0% respectively at 12 months. At 2 and 3 years, freedom from CD-TLR for moderate elongation was 81.8% and 78.2%, and for severe elongation was 63.4% and 42.3%, respectively. Fractures were distinctly uncommon with this stent with a single facture event in the 36 month follow-up period. DISCUSSION: The interwoven nitinol design stent is a stent that achieves an excellent primary patency but further maintains the durability of the stent through 36 months. Optimal stent deployment remains critical to the performance of this stent device and requires optimal vessel preparation. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

[Ab] Resumo:In this study, AISI 1020 steel surface was coated in different heat inputs with (wt.-%) 50FeCrC-20FeW-30FeB powder mixture by using plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding method. The microstructure of the coated samples were investigated by using optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDS). The hardness was measured with micro hardness test device. The dry sliding wear and friction coefficient properties were determined using a block-on-disk type wear test device. Wear tests were performed at 19.62 N, 39.24 N, 58.86 N load and the sliding distance of 900 m. The results were shown that different microstructures formed due to the heat input change. The highest average micro hardness value was measured at 1217 HV on sample coated with low heat input. It was determined that the wear resistance decreased with increasing heat input.

[Ab] Resumo:The electrochemical behavior of the oxide layers on two metal-metal glassy alloys, Fe78Co9Cr10Mo2Al1 (VX9)and Fe49Co49V2 (VX50) (at.%), were studied using electrochemical techniques including electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic polarization (CP) measurements. The morphology and composition of the alloy surfaces were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The corrosion rate and surface roughness of both alloys increased as the concentration of NaOH in aqueous solution was raised. The presence of some protective elements in the composition of the alloys led to the formation of a spontaneous passive layer on the alloy surface. The higher resistance values of both alloys were associated with the magnitude of the dielectric properties of the passive films formed on their surfaces. Both alloys are classified as having outstanding resistance to corrosion, which results from the formation of a passive film that acts as an efficient barrier to corrosion in alkaline solution.

[Ab] Resumo:Multi-metallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) can offer additional opportunities for modifying the electronic, optical and catalytic properties by the control of composition, configuration and size of individual nanostructures that are consisted of more than single element. In this paper, the fabrication of bimetallic Pd-Ag NPs is systematically demonstrated via the solid state dewetting of bilayer thin films on c-plane sapphire by governing the temperature, time as well as composition. The composition of Pd-Ag bilayer remarkably affects the morphology of alloy nanostructures, in which the higher Ag composition, i.e. Pd0.25Ag0.75, leads to the enhanced dewetting of bilayers whereas the higher Pd composition (Pd0.75Ag0.25) hinders the dewetting. Depending on the annealing temperature, Pd-Ag alloy nanostructures evolve with a series of configurations, i.e. nucleation of voids, porous network, elongated nanoclusters and round alloy NPs. In addition, with the annealing time set, the gradual configuration transformation from the elongated to round alloy NPs as well as size reduction is demonstrated due to the enhanced diffusion and sublimation of Ag atoms. The evolution of various morphology of Pd-Ag nanostructures is described based on the surface diffusion and inter-diffusion of Pd and Ag adatoms along with the Ag sublimation, Rayleigh instability and energy minimization mechanism. The reflectance spectra of bimetallic Pd-Ag nanostructures exhibit various quadrupolar and dipolar resonance peaks, peak shifts and absorption dips owing to the surface plasmon resonance of nanostructures depending on the surface morphology. The intensity of reflectance spectra is gradually decreased along with the surface coverage and NP size evolution. The absorption dips are red-shifted towards the longer wavelength for the larger alloy NPs and vice-versa.

[Ab] Resumo:Ti and Ti‒5wt% W alloy foams were produced by freeze-casting process and their mechanical behaviors were compared. The Ti‒5W alloy foam showed a typical acicular Widmanstätten α/ß structure with most of the W dissolved in the ß phase. An electron-probe microanalysis revealed that approximately 2wt% W was uniformly dissolved in the Ti matrix of Ti‒5W alloy foam with few partially dissolved W particles. The compressive-yield strength of Ti‒5W alloy foam (~323MPa) was approximately 20% higher than that of the Ti foam (~256MPa) owing to the solid-solution-strengthening effect of W in the Ti matrix, which also resulted in a dramatic improvement in the wear resistance of Ti‒5W alloy foam. The compressive behaviors of the Ti and Ti‒5W alloy foams were predicted by analytical models and compared with the experimental values. Compared with the Gibson-Ashby and cellular-lattice-structure-in-square-orientation models of porous materials, the orientation-averaging method provided prediction results that are much more accurate in terms of both the Young's modulus and the yield strength of the Ti and Ti‒5W alloy foams.

[Ab] Resumo:Magnesium (Mg)-based stents are extensively explored to alleviate atherosclerosis due to their biodegradability and relative hemocompatibility. To ensure the quality, safety and cost-efficacy of bioresorbable scaffolds and full utilization of the material tunability afforded by alloying, it is critical to access degradability and thrombosis potential of Mg-based alloys using improved in vitro models that mimic as closely as possible the in vivo microenvironment. In this study, we investigated biodegradation and initial thrombogenic behavior of Mg-based alloys at the interface between Mg alloys' surface and simulated physiological environment using a microfluidic system. The degradation properties of Mg-based alloys WE43, AZ31, ZWEK-L, and ZWEK-C were evaluated in complete culture medium and their thrombosis potentials in platelet rich plasma, respectively. The results show that 1) physiological shear stress increased the corrosion rate and decreased platelets adhesion rate as compared to static immersion; 2) secondary phases and impurities in material composition induced galvanic corrosion, resulting in higher corrosion resistance and platelet adhesion rate; 3) Mg-based alloys with higher corrosion rate showed higher platelets adhesion rate. We conclude that a microfluidic-based in vitro system allows evaluation of biodegradation behaviors and platelets responses of Mg-based alloys under specific shear stress, and degradability is related to platelets adhesion.

[Ab] Resumo:This study aims to investigate the flow and fracture behavior of aluminum alloy 6082-T6 (AA6082-T6) at different strain rates and triaxialities. Two groups of Charpy impact tests were carried out to further investigate its dynamic impact fracture property. A series of tensile tests and numerical simulations based on finite element analysis (FEA) were performed. Experimental data on smooth specimens under various strain rates ranging from 0.0001~3400 s-1 shows that AA6082-T6 is rather insensitive to strain rates in general. However, clear rate sensitivity was observed in the range of 0.001~1 s-1 while such a characteristic is counteracted by the adiabatic heating of specimens under high strain rates. A Johnson-Cook constitutive model was proposed based on tensile tests at different strain rates. In this study, the average stress triaxiality and equivalent plastic strain at facture obtained from numerical simulations were used for the calibration of J-C fracture model. Both of the J-C constitutive model and fracture model were employed in numerical simulations and the results was compared with experimental results. The calibrated J-C fracture model exhibits higher accuracy than the J-C fracture model obtained by the common method in predicting the fracture behavior of AA6082-T6. Finally, the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) of fractured specimens with different initial stress triaxialities were analyzed. The magnified fractographs indicate that high initial stress triaxiality likely results in dimple fracture.
