[Ab] Resumo:There were studied features of the manifestation of incoming with potable water nontoxic doses of the herbicide 2,4-D on the body mass index, some indices of lipid metabolism and immune system in different types of diets in the experiment in rats. There was shown a significant gain in body weight of animals, and MDA and leptin level in the serum under the action of a herbicide in conjunction with a high-calorie diet. In all experimental groups there was noted the increased level of total cholesterol, tendency to the increase of LDL cholesterol. Under the action of the herbicide there was noted an increase of IL-6, TNF-a and the numbers of leukocytes and, on the contrary, the reduction of the number of thymocytes and kariocytes in thymus and spleen.

[Ab] Resumo:2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is a chlorophenoxy herbicide used worldwide. We describe a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with UV detection for the determination of 2,4-D in female and male rat serum. This allows to observe the change of serum 2,4-D concentration in rats with time and its pharmacokinetics characteristics with a simple, rapid, optimized and validated method. The serum samples are pretreated and introduced into the HPLC system. The analytes are separated in a XDB-C18 column with a mobile phase of acetonitrile (solvent A) and 0.02 M ammonium acetate (containing 0.1% formic acid) (solvent B) using a gradient elution at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The wavelength for UV detection was set at 230 nm. Calibration curve for 2,4-D was constructed over a range of 0.1-400 mg/L. The method was successfully applied to study the pharmacokinetics of 2,4-D in rats in this study. After oral administration of 300 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg 2,4-D, the mean Cmax values were 601.9 and 218.4 mg/L, the AUC0→∞ values were 23,722 and 4,127 mg×h/L and the clearance (Cl) were 1.10 and 0.02 L/(h×kg), respectively. The developed method was found to be specific, precise, reproducible and rapid.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: Military veterans may have higher rates of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) mortality than non-veterans. Few studies, with sparse exposure information and mixed results, have studied relationships between military-related factors and ALS survival. We evaluated associations between military-related factors and ALS survival among U.S. military veteran cases. METHODS: We followed 616 medical record-confirmed cases from enrollment (2005-2010) in the Genes and Environmental Exposures in Veterans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis study until death or July 25, 2013, whichever came first. We ascertained vital status information from several sources within the Department of Veterans Affairs. We obtained information regarding military service, deployments, and 39 related exposures via standardized telephone interviews. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals. We adjusted for potential confounding and missing covariate data biases via inverse probability weights. We also used inverse probability weights to adjust for potential selection bias among a case group that included a disproportionate number of long-term survivors at enrollment. RESULTS: We observed 446 deaths during 24,267 person-months of follow-up (median follow-up: 28 months). Survival was shorter for cases who served before 1950, were deployed to World War II, or mixed and applied burning agents, with HRs between 1.58 and 2.57. Longer survival was associated with exposure to: paint, solvents, or petrochemical substances; local food not provided by the Armed Forces; or burning agents or Agent Orange in the field with HRs between 0.56 and 0.73. CONCLUSIONS: Although most military-related factors were not associated with survival, associations we observed with shorter survival are potentially important because of the large number of military veterans.

[Ab] Resumo:Strain ZX02 was isolated from Chinese ginger cultivated soil contaminated with various pesticides, which could utilize 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid butyl ester (2,4-D butyl ester) as the sole carbon source. On the basis of the sequence analysis of 16S rRNA gene as well as the morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of strain ZX02, the organism belonged to Gram-negative bacterium and was identified as Acinetobacter sp. ZX02. The strain ZX02 showed a remarkable performance in 2,4-D butyl ester degradation (100% removal in <96 h) in pure culture. Strain ZX02 was sensitive to tetracycline and resistant to amoxicillin and chloramphenicol in an antibiotic sensitivity test. The curing study indicates that the gene for degradation of 2,4-D butyl ester was encoded on a single plasmid of 23 kb. The gene encoding resistance to polymixin B sulfate was also located on this plasmid. On the basis of its greater biodegradation activity, this bacterium is a potential candidate as a bioremediation agent in soils contaminated with 2,4-D butyl ester.

[Ab] Resumo:The aim of this work was to study and to model the biodegradation of atrazine and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid by aerobic mixed cultures. Slow removal rates were observed when biodegrading atrazine, in spite of the initial concentrations. However, high removal rates were obtained when biodegrading 2,4-D, removing up to 100mg/L in about 2months. Regarding the 2,4-D it must be highlighted that a lag phase appears, being its length proportional to the initial 2,4-D concentration. The biodegradation trends were fitted to a Monod based model and the value of the main parameters determined. In the case of atrazine they were µ : 0.011 1/d and Y: 0.53g/g and in the case of 2,4-D µ : 0.071 1/d and Y: 0.44g/g, indicating the higher persistence of atrazine. Once finished the experiments the microbial population was characterized being the major genus Pseudomonas when treating atrazine and Rhodococcus when treating 2,4-D.

[Ab] Resumo:The presence of heavy metals in Triticum aestivum L. growing on the soil enriched with granular sludge after chemical protection was observed. The five variants of treatments using herbicide (Chwastox Turbo 340SL) and four fungicides (Topsin M 500SC, Amistar 250SC, Artea 330EC, and Falcon 460EC) were performed. On control and experimental plots, the concentration of Ni, Pb, Cr, and Cu in wheat leaves were in the range 0.32-0.99, 0.92-1.57, 0.89-6.31, and 7.08-12.59 mg/kg and in grains 0.03 to 0.11, 0.14-0.25, 0.11-0.76, and 1.06-1.46 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of Pb in grain protected by MCPA and 2,4-D with thiophanate-methyl and azoxystrobin was higher than the maximum levels of 0.20 mg/kg D.M. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) differed and depended on chemical protection. The highest value of BCF was achieved for Cd. The statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between concentration of metals and quality parameters of wheat. One observed significant negative correlations between Ni/Zeleny sedimentation value (r = -0.51) and between Pb/starch content (r = -0.57). Positive correlations were observed between Cd/yield, the number of grains/ergosterol concentration (respectively, r = 0.41, r = 0.55, r = 0.56), and Zn/thousand grain weight (r = 0.50) at a p ≤ 0.05.

[Ab] Resumo:The Enlist weed control system allows the use of 2,4-D in soybean but slight necrosis in treated leaves may be observed in the field. The objectives of this research were to measure and compare uptake, translocation, and metabolism of 2,4-D in Enlist (E, resistant) and non-AAD-12 transformed (NT, sensitive) soybeans. The adjuvant from the Enlist Duo herbicide formulation (ADJ) increased 2,4-D uptake (36%) and displayed the fastest rate of uptake (U = 0.2 h) among treatments. E soybean demonstrated a faster rate of 2,4-D metabolism (M = 0.2 h) compared to NT soybean, but glyphosate did not affect 2,4-D metabolism. Metabolites of 2,4-D in E soybean were qualitatively different than NT. Applying 2,4-D-ethylhexyl ester instead of 2,4-D choline (a quaternary ammonium salt) eliminated visual injury to E soybean, likely due to the time required for initial de-esterification and bioactivation. Excessive 2,4-D acid concentrations in E soybean resulting from ADJ-increased uptake may significantly contribute to foliar injury.

[Ab] Resumo:A novel TiO @MgO-Fe O core-shell structure has been synthesized via a hydrolysis and co-precipitation method followed by calcination at 500 °C and has proven to be an efficient photocatalyst. The obtained TiO @MgO-Fe O core-shell was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV-Vis diffused reflectance techniques. Its photocatalytic activity toward 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was investigated in aqueous solutions with and without visible light irradiation in the presence and absence of hydrogen peroxide. It was revealed that a strong electronic coupling exists between two components within the TiO @MgO-Fe O core-shell structure. The present findings clearly highlight that TiO @MgO-Fe O exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in the presence of H O . More than 83% degradation of 2,4-D was observed within 240 min, at an initial concentration of 100 mg L with 0.5 g of catalyst per liter. Moreover, the material showed high chemical stability after four consecutive experiments with no significant difference in the rate of photocatalytic degradation. Therefore, the results reported herein offer a green, low cost and highly efficient photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

[Ab] Resumo:A multiple pin-plane corona discharge reactor was used to generate plasma for the degradation of 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from the aqueous solution. The 2,4-D of concentration 1 mg/L was completely removed within 6 min of plasma treatment. Almost complete mineralization was achieved after the treatment time of 14 min for a 2,4-D concentration of 10 mg/L. Effects of different water constituents such as carbonates, nitrate, sulphate, chloride ions, natural organic matter (humic acids) and pH on 2,4-D degradation was studied. A significant antagonistic effect of carbonate and humic acid was observed, whereas, the effects of other ions were insignificant. A higher first order rate constant of 1.73 min was observed, which was significantly decreased in the presence of carbonate ions and humic acids. Also, a higher degradation of 2,4-D was observed in acidic pH conditions. Different 2,4-D intermediates were detected and the degradation pathway of 2,4-D in plasma treatment process was suggested. The toxicity of 10 mg/L 2,4-D was completely eradicated after 10 min of plasma treatment.

[Ab] Resumo:Vietnam has a double burden of dioxin from both industrial sources and historical sources. To evaluate the concentration of PCDD/Fs in ambient air in different areas of Vietnam and their possible sources, atmospheric samples were collected from three areas namely Son La (rural area) and Da Nang (harbor - Agent Orange hotspot area), and Ho Chi Minh City (metropolitan - industrial city). Vapor and solid phases of PCDD/Fs were collected and analyzed following the TO-9A sampling method. Principal Component Analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization model were applied to characterize the possible source. The average concentrations of PCDD/Fs were found to be 21.3 ± 13 fg I-TEQ/m in Son La (n = 32), 65.2 ± 34 fg I-TEQ/m in Da Nang (n = 16) and 139 ± 84 fg I-TEQ/m in Ho Chi Minh City (n = 8). The findings of this study targeted open burning (42%) and biomass burning (51%) as the major emission sources of PCDD/Fs in ambient air of Son La, Vietnam. Major possible sources of PCDD/Fs in Da Nang could be transportation activities (64%), however, the other factor (36%) was suspected to be contaminated with 2,3,7,8-TeCDD from Agent Orange. Most of PCDD/Fs emitted in Ho Chi Minh City related to industrial activities (93%).
