[Ab] Resumo:In May 2016, a fire occurred in one of the largest landfills in Europe (Seseña, Toledo, Spain), where 70,000-90,000tons of tires had been illegally accumulated for >15years. Because of the proximity of population nuclei and the duration of the episode (>20days), we conducted a preliminary human health risk assessment study just after the tire fire. Samples of air and soil were collected in 3 areas surrounding the landfill (El Quiñón, at only 500m, and Seseña Nuevo and Seseña Viejo, both at 4km), as well as in background sites. In addition, samples of crops (barley, wheat, cabbage and lettuce) were also obtained from local farmers. The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and a number of trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Tl, and V) were analyzed in all the samples. The concentrations of all the target pollutants, excepting PAHs, were relatively similar at the different sampling zones, irrespective of the distance to the landfill. In turn, a significant increase of PAHs was noted near the tire landfill, with air levels up to 6-times higher than those found at 4km (134 vs. 19.5-22.7ng/m ). Similarly, PAH concentrations in lettuce were relatively higher than those typically found in monitoring programs of food safety. Because of the increase of airborne PAHs, cancer risks due to exposure to environmental pollutants for the population living at El Quiñón, near the landfill, were between 3- and 5-times higher than those estimated for the inhabitants of Seseña. After this preliminary study, further investigations, focused only on PAHs, but more extensive in terms of number of samples, should be conducted to assure that PAHs have been progressively degraded through time.

[Ab] Resumo:The paper presents the results of a study of the qualitative composition and quantity of pollutants in atmospheric air in the course of operational wear of the road surface, braking system and tire treads of automobiles. On the basis of field research in samples ofatmospheric air ofthe city of St. Petersburg there were identified compounds of heavy metals andpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). There was established the dependence of the level of air pollution on traffic flows in locations of the city. Pollutants were shown to enter the air environment mainly in the form offine dust particles. There was justified the need for the control ofproducts of wear the road traffic complex in the hygienic assessment of the quality of ambient air ofmegalopises.

[Ab] Resumo:In the paper there are presented results of the study of the number of compounds of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) emitted into the environment with exhaust gases of road transport. In the composition of the exhaust gases 11000 tons of heavy metal compounds and 49.8 tons of highly toxic of PAHs in the soil were established to annually be emitted into the ambient air of St. Petersburg. There was justified the application of the method of the emission inventory of pollutants into the atmosphere from the combustion of the fuel of vehicles. There was established the quantity of PAH and metals emitted to the environment in dependence on the intensity of the traffic flow. The implementation of results of the study will allow to improve the quality of the sanitary and epidemiological surveillance in the territories of the cities with the developed road transport industry.

[Ab] Resumo:This study is devoted to the investigation of quantitative and qualitative composition and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban soils on the example of recreational, residential and industrial areas of Saint-Petersburg (Russia). The evaluation of soil contamination levels with heavy metals and metalloids of the first and second classes of hazard is given as well. Total PAH content in soils of the studied area in most cases exceeds international soil quality guideline values (1 mg/kg), varying from 0.67 to 17.45 mg/kg. In most samples benzo[a] pyrene concentrations were found to be higher than MPC for this substance in soil. Calculated BaP-equivalents of PAHs indicate to the high carcinogenic risk for health, associated with soil contamination. Mean PAH concentrations in soil differ authentically between various types of functional zones and in the whole of the city. The significant positive correlation between soil organic content and PAH levels in soils was revealed in most samples. Calculated values of the total index of soil contamination (Zc) by heavy metals and metalloids were characterized by low values (47.28-121.14), that corresponds to the category of dangerous pollution (32 < Z < 128).

[Ab] Resumo:An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium capable of degrading the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene was isolated from sediment of Pearl River and designated PrR001. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this strain was affiliated within the genus Defluviimonas in the family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria and showed great similarity with the type strain Defluviimonas indica 20V17 (96.3 % similarity). The DNA G+C content of strain PrR001 was 68.3 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids comprised summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c), C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c, C18 : 0 3OH, and C18 : 0. The sole respiratory lipoquinone was ubiquinone-10. The main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid and three unidentified phospholipids. Based on physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, strain PrR001 is suggested as a novel species in the genus Defluviimonas, for which the name Defluviimonas pyrenivorans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Defluviimonas pyrenivorans is PrR001 (=CICC 24263 =KCTC 62192 ).

[Ab] Resumo:Diatoms play key roles in primary production and carbon fixation at a global scale and in some cases these species live on marine ecosystems impacted by crude oil (CO) spills. Halamphora oceanica, a new diatom species from the Southwest of the Gulf of Mexico was isolated and cultured in the laboratory and was exposed to water accommodated fraction (WAF) of different Maya CO loads at 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10g/L by 96h. A battery of biomarkers involved in oxidative stress (O •, H O , TBARS, ROOH, RC=O, SOD, CAT, GPx), biotransformation and conjugation (total CYP450 activity and GST) moreover fatty acid (FA) metabolism (FA levels, fatty-acid synthase and acyl-CoA oxidase) were measured. Obtained results suggest that increases of PAHs in the medium (below to EC ) acts as external forces able to turn-on regulatory mechanisms on H. oceanica involved in both, on the PAHs uptake and changing its aerobic metabolism to anaerobic metabolism. However, the growth of this microalgae species evaluated as chlorophyll "a" and pheophytin levels increased as the WAF concentration indicating that PAHs and other hydrosoluble hydrocarbons were used as carbon and energy sources by unidentified enzymes not evaluated in the current study. Our hypothesis was also corroborated by IBRv2. In the current study, we suppose the change from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism as a strategy for Halamphora oceanica survival exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons.

[Ab] Resumo:A two-dimensional liquid chromatographic electrospray-ionization tandem mass spectrometric (LC/LC-ESI-MS/MS) procedure for the simultaneous determination of the expected mercapturic acids of naphthalene (1- and 2-naphthylmercapturic acids; 1- and 2-NpMA) and of the well-established parameter for benzene biomonitoring (S-phenylmercapturic acid; PhMA) in human urine was developed, validated and applied to human urine samples. Apart from sample acidification, the enrichment of analytes and sample clean-up as well as the separation of all analytes were completely automated using both a restricted access material column (RAM C18) and a core-shell biphenyl material. Sensitive, specific and reliable detection of all target substances, with limits of detection ranging from 0.03 to 0.04 µg/L, was achieved using structurally well matching isotope-labelled internal standard substances for each analyte. Intraday and interday precision were determined, ranging from 2.2 to 4.3%, and mean accuracy from 98.4 to 100.8%. Due to the low limits of detection, the good precision and accuracy of the developed procedure, it is well suited for application in biomonitoring studies to evaluate the validity of mercapturic acids as biomarkers after naphthalene exposure.

[Ab] Resumo:Routine monitoring of workplace exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is performed mainly via active sampling. However, active samplers have several drawbacks and, in some cases, may even be unusable. Polyurethane foam (PUF) as personal passive air samplers constitute good alternatives for PAH monitoring in occupational air (8 h). However, PUFs must be further tested to reliably yield detectable levels of PAHs in short exposure times (1-3 h) and under extreme occupational conditions. Therefore, we compared the personal exposure monitoring performance of a passive PUF sampler with that of an active air sampler and determined the corresponding uptake rates (Rs). These rates were then used to estimate the occupational exposure of firefighters and police forensic specialists to 32 PAHs. The work environments studied were heavily contaminated by PAHs with (for example) benzo(a)pyrene ranging from 0.2 to 56 ng m , as measured via active sampling. We show that, even after short exposure times, PUF can reliably accumulate both gaseous and particle-bound PAHs. The Rs-values are almost independent of variables such as the concentration and the wind speed. Therefore, by using the Rs-values (2.0-20 m day ), the air concentrations can be estimated within a factor of two for gaseous PAHs and a factor of 10 for particulate PAHs. With very short sampling times (1 h), our method can serve as a (i) simple and user-friendly semi-quantitative screening tool for estimating and tracking point sources of PAH in micro-environments and (ii) complement to the traditional active pumping methods.

[Ab] Resumo:The goal of the work was to investigate the concentrations of the 16 US EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) bound to submicrometer particles (particulate matter, PM ) suspended in the air of university teaching rooms and in the atmospheric air outside. Two teaching rooms were selected in two Polish cities, Gliwice, southern Poland, and Warsaw, central Poland, differing with regard to the ambient concentrations and major sources of PM and PAH. The variabilities of indoor and outdoor 24-hr concentrations of PM -bound PAH, the ratio (I/O) of the indoor to outdoor 24-hr concentrations of PM -bound PAH, probable sources of PAH and the level of the hazard from the mixture of the 16 PAH (ΣPAH) to humans at both sites were analyzed. In both Warsaw and Gliwice, the mean concentrations of PM -bound ΣPAH were slightly higher in the atmospheric air than in the rooms. The indoor and outdoor concentrations of individual PAH in Gliwice were correlated, in Warsaw - they were not. Most probably, the lack of the correlations in Warsaw was due to the existence of an unidentified indoor source of gaseous PAH enriching PM in phenanthrene, fluorene, and pyrene. Although the ambient concentrations of PM -bound PAH were low compared to the ones observed earlier at both sites, they were much higher than in other urbanized European areas. However, because of low mass share of heavy PAH in ΣPAH, the various indicators of the health hazard from the 16 PAH mixture were low compared to other regions.

[Ab] Resumo:The Love River and Ho-Jin River, two major urban rivers in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, are moderately to heavily polluted because different types of improperly treated wastewaters are discharged into the rivers. In this study, sediment and river water samples were collected from two rivers to investigate the river water quality and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. The spatial distribution, composition, and source appointment of PAHs of the sediments were examined. The impacts of PAHs on ecological system were assessed using toxic equivalence quotient (TEQ) of potentially carcinogenic PAHs (TEQ ) and sediment quality guidelines. The average PAHs concentrations ranged from 2161 ng/g in Love River sediment to 160 ng/g in Ho-Jin River sediment. This could be due to the fact that Love River Basin had much higher population density and pyrolytic activities. High-ring PAHs (4-6 rings) contributed to 59-90% of the total PAHs concentrations. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) had the highest toxic equivalence quotient (up to 188 ng TEQ/g). Moreover, the downstream sediments contained higher TEQ of total TPHs than midstream and upstream sediment samples. The PAHs were adsorbed onto the fine particles with high organic content. Results from diagnostic ratio analyses indicate that the PAHs in two urban river sediments might originate from oil/coal combustion, traffic-related emissions, and waste combustion (pyrogenic activities). Future pollution prevention and management should target the various industries, incinerators, and transportation emission in this region to reduce the PAHs pollution.
