[Ab] Resumo:A study was carried out to investigate the degradation of organic contaminants (Congo red and Reactive yellow - 105) using cellulose acetate - polystyrene (CA-PS) membrane with and without ZnO impregnation. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), atomic force microscope (AFM) and thermogravimeric analysis (TG-DTA) analysis were carried out to characterize bare and ZnO impregnated CA-PS membranes. Membrane efficiency was also tested for pure water flux and antifouling performance. The modified membrane showed almost 85% water flux recovery. Blending of ZnO nanoparticles to CA-PS matrix could decrease membrane fouling and increase permeation quality of the membrane with above 90% of photocatalytic degradation efficiency for dyes. The rate of degradation of dyes was observed using UV-Vis spectrometer. Reusability of CA-PS-ZnO membrane was studied and no significant change was noted in the degradation efficiency until fourth cycle. Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model well describes the photo degradation capacity and the degradation of dyes CR and RY - 105 exhibited pseudo-first order kinetics. The regression coefficient (R) of CR and RY - 105 found to be 0.99. The novelty of the prepared CA-PS-ZnO membrane is that it has better efficiency and high thermal stability than our previously reported material. Therefore, ZnO impregnated CA-PS membrane had proved to be an innovative alternative for the degradation of CR and RY - 105 dyes.

[Ab] Resumo:The new nanophotocatalyst MgZnCr-TiO was prepared by co-precipitation under different molar ratio of metals (Zn:Cr) and the loaded amount of TiO . And it was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy et al. Langmuir model fitted well the adsorption isotherm with the value of R 0.9765, the maximum adsorption capacity was 526.32 mg g , the adsorption followed pseudo second order kinetic by MgZnCr-TiO (1:1:2-0.05). The photocatalytic oxidation of Congo red was used to determine the photocatalytic performance of MgZnCr-TiO (1:1:2-0.05) under visible light irradiation, and the removal rate reached 98% after reaction for 40 min. The degradation mechanism of Congo red also was proposed, and the MgZnCr-TiO (1:1:2-0.05) was stable after five cycles. Compared to the adsorption, Congo red was removed fundamentally by photocatalysis and it is expected to be an effective way to eliminate Congo red.

[Ab] Resumo:The feasibility of using natural waste (raw date pits) as a low-cost adsorbent for the adsorption of an anionic dye (Congo red) from aqueous solution has been investigated. Adsorption optimized conditions were obtained at low dose 1 g/L, initial dye concentration 100 mg/L, pH 2, equilibrium contact time 120 min, and temperature 20 °C. The corresponding adsorption capacity was around 70 mg/g and could reach 150 mg/g by increasing the ionic strength of the dye solution (0.05 M CaCl2). These results are well modeled by Freundlich isotherm and kinetics study followed by pseudo second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process is endothermic and not spontaneous. The tests of desorption-regeneration showed that the studied adsorbent has the disadvantage of the loss of efficiency at its reuse but this is offset by its abundance. Based on these results, it can be used as competitive material for the removal of dyes.

[Ab] Resumo:History A 68-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for work-up because of generalized fatigue, anorexia, chronic diarrhea, and weight loss. Laboratory work-up revealed an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 58 mm/h (reference range, 3-23 mm/h), a hemoglobin level of 14.1 g/dL (reference range, 13.8-17.5 g/dL), a leukocyte count of 8.1 × 10 /L (reference range, [3.4-9.7] × 10 /L), a platelet count of 223 × 10 /L (reference range, [158-424] × 10 /L), an alkaline phosphatase level of 85 U/L (1.42 µkat/L) (normal level, <142 U/L [2.37 µkat/L]), a serum creatinine level of 93 µmol/L (reference range, 79-125 µmol/L), a serum total protein level of 82 g/L (reference range, 66-81 g/L), a serum albumin level of 39.3 g/L (reference range, 40.2-47.6 g/L), an albumin-to-globulin ratio (a test showing relative amounts of major plasma proteins) of 0.92 (reference range, 0.8-2.0), a urine protein level of 15 mg/dL (normal level, <20 mg/dL), a total serum calcium level of 2.46 mmol/L (reference range, 2.14-2.53 mmol/L), and a carcinoembryonic antigen value of 2.69 µg/L (normal value, <3.4 µg/L). Serology findings were negative for celiac disease. Thyroid function was normal, as were 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and chromogranin A levels. Initial radiologic examination included chest radiography and plain abdominal erect radiography. Gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed to rule out inflammatory bowel disease or gastrointestinal neoplasm as a cause of chronic diarrhea. Endoscopic mucosal resection of two polyps from the cardia and duodenal bulb was performed during esophagogastroduodenoscopy, but histologic findings at hematoxylin-eosin staining were normal. Colonoscopy revealed diverticulosis involving the entire colon. Serum immunoelectrophoresis showed a monoclonal band, which was confirmed to be immunoglobulin Mλ at immunofixation. After histologic analysis of the bone marrow biopsy specimen, diagnosis of Waldenström macroglobulinemia was established, and computed tomography (CT) of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis was requested to depict lymphadenopathy and organomegaly. On the basis of CT findings, two more specimens considered highly sensitive for the CT diagnosis were obtained via minimally invasive biopsy, but the results were negative. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed a year later to control the progression of CT findings.

[Ab] Resumo:We present here the biosynthesis of AgNps from the aqueous extract of H. thebaica fruit, and monitored through UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The functional group were characterized through ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the particle size, morphologies and elemental composition of the nanoparticles were investigated by using TEM, FESEM and EDS respectively. The anti-proliferation activity of the synthesized AgNps was carried out using MTT assay on human prostate (PC3), breast (MCF7) and liver (HepG2) cancer cell lines. The anti-proliferation assay showed that the AgNps were able to inhibit the proliferation of the cancer cell lines in a dose depending manner. The effect was found more pronounced on prostate (IC 2.6 mg/mL) followed by breast (IC 4.8 mg/mL) and then liver cancer cell lines (IC 6.8 mg/mL). The prepared AgNps were found to inhibit 99% growth of both E. coli and S. aureus after 24 h of incubation. The nanoparticles were used for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and Congo red dyes (CR), which efficiently degrade CR, but make complex formation with 4-NP. Therefore, the AgNps synthesized from the aqueous fruit extract of H. thebaica have potential application in pharmacology and waste water treatment.

[Ab] Resumo:The coconut residual fiber (CRF) is the major byproduct obtained during production of virgin coconut oil. Its application as a biosorbent for adsorption of Congo red was investigated. The CRF was subjected to different pretreatments, namely, pressure cooking, hexane treatment, acid treatment and their combinations. The pretreatment of CRF with the combination of hexane, acid, and pressure cooking resulted in the highest degree of adsorption. The equilibrium data were analyzed and found to fit best to both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy (ΔG kJ mol ), standard enthalpy (ΔH , kJ mol ) and standard entropy (ΔS , kJ mol K ) of the systems were calculated by using the Langmuir constant. The ΔG , ΔH and ΔS were found to be 16.51 kJ mol , -19.39 kJ mol and -0.12 kJ mol K , respectively, at 300 K. These thermodynamic parameters suggest the present adsorption process to be non-spontaneous and exothermic. The adsorption process was observed to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics. The results suggest that CRF has potential to be a biosorbent for the removal of hazardous material (Congo red dye) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 128.94 mg g at 300 K.

[Ab] Resumo:A novel combination of titanium oxide (TiO )/gold (Au)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite (NC) was synthesised by sol- gel method. MWCNT functionalisation by modified Hummers method. TiO /Au nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesised by biological method using bark extract. MWCNT/TiO /Au NC samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible-diffuse reflectance spectra, microRaman, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution-transmission electron microscopy analyses. The photocatalytic performance of the obtained for NC toward the decomposition of congo-red and the antimicrobial activity for inhibition of Gram positive ( and ), Gram negative ( and ) and fungal strains have been evaluated and the results are compared with positive control ampicillin. The metal and metal-oxide NPs have a lower sorption capacity. The herbicidal bond to the tested CNTs by the combination of electron donor-acceptor interactions and hydrogen bonds. In particular, the dispersion of NC and control of sodium borohydride, it has more efficient effect on the photodegradation and antibacterial activity of positive control of ampicillin. The NC material has exhibited maximum photodegradation and antibacterial activity results of zone of inhibition when compared with control samples.

[Ab] Resumo:The present study was conducted to screen a laccase-producing fungal endophyte, optimize fermentation conditions, and evaluate the decolorization ability of the laccase. A new fungal endophyte capable of laccase-producing was firstly isolated from pigeon pea and identified as based on a ITS-rRNA sequences analysis. Meanwhile, various fermentation parameters on the laccase production were optimized via response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal fermentation conditions were a fermentation time of five days, temperature 30 °C and pH 6.22. Laccase activity reached 16.52 ± 0.18 U/mL under the above conditions. Furthermore, the laccase showed effective decolorization capability toward synthetic dyes (Congo red, Methyl orange, Methyl red, and Crystal violet) in the presence of the redox mediator ABTS, with more than 70% of dyes decolorizing after 24 h of incubation. Additionally, the activity of laccase was relatively stable with pH (4.5-6.5) and a temperature range of 35-55 °C. Therefore, the high laccase production of the strain and the new fungal laccase could provide a promising alterative approach for industrial and environmental applications.

[Ab] Resumo:The present study is concerned with the batch adsorption of congo red (CR) from an aqueous solution using calcium alginate beads impregnated with nano-goethite (CABI nano-goethite) as an adsorbent. The optimum conditions for CR removal were determined by studying operational variables viz. pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial dye ion concentration and temperature. The CABI nano-goethite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X- ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analysis. The CR sorption data onto CABI nano-goethite were described using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherm models. The results show that the best fit was achieved with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity (181.1mg/g) of CR was occurred at pH 3.0. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model. Desorption experiments were carried out to explore the feasibility of regenerating the adsorbent and the adsorbed CR from CABI nano-goethite. The best desorbing agent was 0.1M NaOH with an efficiency of 94% recovery. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° for the CR adsorption were determined by using adsorption capacities at five different temperatures (293, 303, 313, 323 and 303K). Results show that the adsorption process was endothermic and favoured at high temperature.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli O157:H7 (O157) strain 86-24, linked to a 1986 disease outbreak, displays curli- and biofilm-negative phenotypes that are correlated with the lack of Congo red (CR) binding and formation of white colonies (CR ) on a CR-containing medium. However, on a CR medium this strain produces red isolates (CR ) capable of producing curli fimbriae and biofilms. RESULTS: To identify genes controlling differential expression of curli fimbriae and biofilm formation, the RNA-Seq profile of a CR isolate was compared to the CR parental isolate. Of the 242 genes expressed differentially in the CR isolate, 201 genes encoded proteins of known functions while the remaining 41 encoded hypothetical proteins. Among the genes with known functions, 149 were down- and 52 were up-regulated. Some of the upregulated genes were linked to biofilm formation through biosynthesis of curli fimbriae and flagella. The genes encoding transcriptional regulators, such as CsgD, QseB, YkgK, YdeH, Bdm, CspD, BssR and FlhDC, which modulate biofilm formation, were significantly altered in their expression. Several genes of the envelope stress (cpxP), heat shock (rpoH, htpX, degP), oxidative stress (ahpC, katE), nutrient limitation stress (phoB-phoR and pst) response pathways, and amino acid metabolism were downregulated in the CR isolate. Many genes mediating acid resistance and colanic acid biosynthesis, which influence biofilm formation directly or indirectly, were also down-regulated. Comparative genomics of CR and CR isolates revealed the presence of a short duplicated sequence in the rcsB gene of the CR isolate. The alignment of the amino acid sequences of RcsB of the two isolates showed truncation of RcsB in the CR isolate at the insertion site of the duplicated sequence. Complementation of CR isolate with rcsB of the CR parent restored parental phenotypes to the CR isolate. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that RcsB is a global regulator affecting bacterial survival in growth-restrictive environments through upregulation of genes promoting biofilm formation while downregulating certain metabolic functions. Understanding whether rcsB inactivation enhances persistence and survival of O157 in carrier animals and the environment would be important in developing strategies for controlling this bacterial pathogen in these niches.
