[Ab] Resumo:This study identified factors associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in people with metabolic syndrome in South Korea. The sample consisted of 1,207 subjects with metabolic syndrome from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2014. High-risk alcohol consumption, smoking, aerobic physical activity, leisure physical activity, excessive carbohydrate intake, and fat intake were measured. A secondary data analysis was performed using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Gender was associated with all unhealthy behaviors. The number of metabolic syndrome components, a poor perceived health status, and attempts to control weight were associated with physical inactivity. Those findings may be helpful to develop a tailored lifestyle modification programs for people with metabolic syndrome.

[Ab] Resumo:Background: In case of shortage of breast milk despite proper lactation care or the poor state of the mother's health, breast milk from human milk bank is recommended for feeding preterm infants Objective: This study retrospectively evaluated the first year of the operation of the Regional Human Milk Bank Material and methods: Data concerning donors was collected in the human milk bank during the cooperation. The clinical characteristics of the recipients was made on the basis of medical documentation from the Holy Family Hospital in Warsaw, Poland. Analysis of nutritional value was performed with the human milk analyzer (MIRIS AB) Results: In the first year of activity, 45 voluntary donors established cooperation, donating from 650 to 32030 ml of human milk. The content of nutrients in milk provided by donors was variable - protein 0.4-1.5 g / 100 ml, fat 1.1-7.4 g / 100 ml, carbohydrates 6.3-7.9 g / 100 ml. The average length of using donated human milk was 4 days and the average volume of milk for one infant was 282 ml Conclusions: The donor profiles have a significant impact on the milk composition form HMB. The nutritional value can be improved by recruitment donors from mothers that gave birth prematurely and by beginning donation at earlier stages of lactation as soon as lactation is stabilized. In case of shortage of mothers own milk the immediate implementation of donors milk as a short-term support can significantly reduce the food intolerance incidence in the group of prematurely born infants

[Ab] Resumo:Fatty acids (FAs) have been postulated to impact adiposity, but few epidemiological studies addressing this hypothesis have been conducted. This study investigated the association between serum phospholipid FAs (S-PLFAs) and indicators of obesity. BMI and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were collected from 372 healthy Mexican women included as controls in a case-control study. S-PLFA percentages were determined through gas chromatography. Desaturation indices, SCD-16, SCD-18, FA desaturase (FADS)1, and FADS2, biomarkers of endogenous metabolism, were proxied respectively as 16:1n-7/16:0, 18:1n-9/18:0, 20:4n-6/20:3n-6, and 22:6n-3/20:5n-3. Multiple linear regressions adjusted for relevant confounders and corrected for multiple testing were conducted to determine the association between S-PLFA, desaturation indices, and indicators of adiposity. SCD-16 (ß = 0.034, = 0.001, q = 0.014), palmitoleic acid (ß = 0.031, = 0.001, q = 0.014), and dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (ß = 0.043, = 0.000, q = 0.0002) were positively associated with BMI. Total n-6 PUFAs (ß = 1.497, = 0.047, q = 0.22) and the ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFAs (ß = 0.034, = 0.040, q = 0.19) were positively associated with WHR, while odd-chain FAs (pentadecanoic and heptadecanoic acid) showed negative associations with all the adiposity indicators. In conclusion, increased endogenous synthesis of palmitoleic acid and a high n-6/n-3 ratio are associated with increased adiposity, while odd-chain FAs are associated with decreased adiposity. Further studies are needed to determine the potential causality behind these associations.

[Ab] Resumo:It is known that the macronutrient content of a meal has different impacts on the postprandial satiety and appetite hormonal responses. Whether obesity interacts with such nutrient-dependent responses is not well characterized. We examined the postprandial appetite and satiety hormonal responses after a high-protein (HP), high-carbohydrate (HC), or high-fat (HF) mixed meal. This was a randomized cross-over study of 9 lean insulin-sensitive (mean±SEM HOMA-IR 0.83±0.10) and 9 obese insulin-resistant (HOMA-IR 4.34±0.41) young (age 21-40 years), normoglycaemic Chinese men. We measured fasting and postprandial plasma concentration of glucose, insulin, active glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), total peptide-YY (PYY), and acyl-ghrelin in response to HP, HF, or HC meals. Overall postprandial plasma insulin response was more robust in the lean compared to obese subjects. The postprandial GLP-1 response after HF or HP meal was higher than HC meal in both lean and obese subjects. In obese subjects, HF meal induced higher response in postprandial PYY compared to HC meal. HP and HF meals also suppressed ghrelin greater compared to HC meal in the obese than lean subjects. In conclusion, a high-protein or high-fat meal induces a more favorable postprandial satiety and appetite hormonal response than a high-carbohydrate meal in obese insulin-resistant subjects.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Unhealthy dietary fats are associated with faster kidney function decline. The cell membrane composition of phospholipid fatty acids (FAs) is a determinant of membrane fluidity and rheological properties. These properties, which have been linked to kidney damage, are thought to be reflected by the lipophilic index (LI). We prospectively investigated the associations of LI with kidney function and its decline. METHODS AND RESULTS: Observational study from the Prospective Investigation of Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors including 975 men and women with plasma phospholipid FAs composition and cystatin-C estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Of these, 780 attended re-examination after 5 years, and eGFR changes were assessed. Participants with a 5-year eGFR reduction ≥30% were considered chronic kidney disease (CKD) progressors (n = 198). LI was calculated as the sum of the products of the FA proportions with the respective FAs melting points. Blood rheology/viscosity measurements were performed in a random subsample of 559 subjects at baseline. Increased LI showed a statistically significant but overall weak association with blood, plasma viscosity (both Spearman rho = 0.16, p < 0.01), and erythrocyte deformability (rho = -0.09, p < 0.05). In cross-sectional analyses, LI associated with lower eGFR (regression coefficient 3.00 ml/min/1.73 m 1-standard deviation (SD) increment in LI, 95% CI: -4.31, -1.69, p < 0.001). In longitudinal analyses, LI associated with a faster eGFR decline (-2.13 [95% CI -3.58, -0.69] ml/min/1.73 m , p < 0.01) and with 32% increased odds of CKD progression (adjusted OR 1.32 [95%, CI 1.05-1.65]). CONCLUSIONS: A high LI was associated with lower kidney function, kidney function decline, and CKD progression.

[Ab] Resumo:Obesity is a commonly growing life-threatening problem of the modern world. The present study was aimed to assess alterations in transaminase levels as well as leptin and hepcidin levels of sera through ELISA after high fat diet consumption for sixteen weeks by albino rats (n=5). Three groups were established: experimental groups 1 and 2 and a control group. Group 1 was fed on a high fat diet having a composition of 33% rat chow +33% sucrose +33% milk powder. Similarly, group 2 was fed with another high fat diet with a mixture of rat chow and milk powder ad libitum. The control group was fed on normal rat chow and water ad libitum. After sixteen weeks, the rats were euthanized and blood was collected for serum separation. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase showed a positive significant increase (P=0.0325) while a significant negative change (P=0.0006) was noted in aspartate aminotransferase levels in both the experimental groups compared to the control group. Serum leptin levels were found to be increased up to 10.06-fold in Group 1 and 6.11-fold in Group 2 when compared to controls. On the other hand, serum hepcidin levels showed up to 1-fold and 2.59-fold changes in Group 1 and Group 2, respectively, compared to controls. Taken together, from these results it can be concluded that a high fat diet not only disturbs normal metabolism, but it also leads to liver inflammation which is obvious by the changes in transaminase activity as well as leptin and hepcidin levels.

[Ab] Resumo:The introduction of chemical compounds in diabetes modeling can't adequately reflect the development of the disease. However, the choice of an experimental model of diabetes type 1 or 2 is largely determined by the purpose of the research: testing of pharmacological activity, genetic research or clarifying the mechanisms of disease development. The high cost of respective genetic lines of laboratory animals, the complexity of reproduction of the model, the special conditions of care and a high degree of inbreeding determine the necessity for the development, testing, and improvement of non-genetic models. The most widely used chemical models of type 1 diabetes in modern experimental diabetology are alloxan models and of type 2 or mixed type diabetes are streptozotocin models. Sensitivity to the introduction of the diabetogenic compounds can essentially depend on the species, but also on animal genetic line and its age. The results of studies in which the injection of streptozotocin (STZ) to laboratory animals (mice and rats) simulated type 2 diabetes are shown. It is noted thatpre-treatment with nicotinamide can simulate the state more appropriate to type 2 diabetes. Taking into account the leading role of abdominal obesity as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, considerable attention in the article is paid to the modeling of type 2 diabetes by STZ-injection and high-fat diet. As alternative models of a type 2 diabetes in rodents also induce by streptozotocin injection and high fructose diet. The combined effect of low dose STZ and high fructose diet allows in relatively short period induce the development of type 2 diabetes in rats. It is concluded that the modeling of diabetes by STZ injection are widely demand for the optimization screening of biologically active substances with antidiabetic action in experiments in vivo and is a step before their clinical trials in the composition of specialized preventive and therapeutic products.

[Ab] Resumo:The aim of the article is to study actual ration of patients suffered from hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and its interaction with the development of arterial hypertension (AH). 296 men aged 2059 suffered from HFRS were under the care of physician within the period of 1 to 6 years. Among this group 49 cases of arterial hypertension have been registered after HFRS. Frequency method of food product consumption was used to define nutrition. A Russian questionnaire published by Institute of Nutrition (1997) was used. Actual nutrition in men suffered from HFRS is marked by basic nutrients unbalance that is: excessive cholesterol and fat consumption (due to saturated fatty acid), polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency, sugar overuse and animal protein prevalence over vegetable proteins in patient ration. Atherogenic shift in a ration of patients with AH and suffered from HRFS has been exposed more strongly in all aged group but mostly evident in patients aged 40 and after. Alcohol consumption in men with AH and suffered from HFRS is higher than in healthy peers. Interaction between atherogenic unbalance on the main nutrients in patients with HFRS and arterial hypertension has been defined. Consumatory behavior correction is to be taken to prevent arterial hypertension in recovered patients suffered from HFRS.

[Ab] Resumo:It is recognized that breast milk is the ideal food for newborns. Indeed breast milk can provide basic guidelines to improve the composition of ingredients in adapted infant formulae. One of the main parts of breast milk is milk fat. Although the exact functionality of the entire spectrum of fat is not yet fully understood, it is known that various lipids present in breast milk, can modulate functions of the gastrointestinal tract, the lipoprotein metabolism, the structure and function of cell membranes, as well as many signal pathways in the infant's organism. In this paper we tried to present evidence that dietary cholesterol (CHOL) is a very important component of the infant's nutrition. Meanwhile, almost all infant formulae, both cow and goat milk based, use nearly only vegetable oils as their fat component providing phytosterols, rather than CHOL as in breast milk. It is known that breast milk is a rich source of CHOL and phytosterols cannot perform the functions of CHOL. One can imagine that when the infant is transferred to artificial feeding with such formulae, and denied the opportunity to receive dietary CHOL in any useful amounts, this may affect outcomes like optimal child development, and may have a major long-term 'programming' effect on the metabolism of CHOL. We propose to discuss the thesis of the great importance of the presence of CHOL in infant formulae. The applied value of this thesis is the need to optimize the fat component of breast milk substitutes by introducing CHOL, for example, in the composition of milk fat. Although it is clear that compelling evidence of the potential benefits of adding various sources of CHOL infant formula is insufficient, at this stage, there is cause for a critical discussion and review of the composition of functional components of breast milk substitutes.
