[Ab] Resumo:Problems of hygienic reliability of the drinking water use in regions of the Russian Federation are observed in the article. The optimization of the water use was shown must be based on the bearing in mind of regional peculiarities of the shaping of water quality of groundwater and surface sources of the water use, taking into account of the effectiveness of regional water protection programs, programs for water treatment, coordination of the activity of economic entities and oversight bodies in the management of water quality on the basis of socio-hygienic monitoring. Regional problems requiring hygienic justification and accounting, include such issues as complex hydrological, hydrogeological, climatic and geographical conditions, pronouncement of the severity of anthropogenic pollution of sources of water supply, natural conditions of the shaping of water quality, efficiency of the water treatment. There is need in the improvement of the problems of the water quality monitoring, including with the use of computer technology, which allows to realize regional hygienic monitoring and spatial-temporal analysis of the water quality, to model the water quality management, to predict conditions of the water use by population in regions taking into account peculiarities of the current health situation. In the article there is shown the practicability of the so-called complex concept of multiple barriers suggesting the combined use of chemical oxidation and physical methods of the preparation of drinking water. It is required the further development of legislation for the protection of water bodies from pollution with the bigging up the status of sanitary protection zones; timely revision of the regulatory framework, establishing sanitary-epidemiological requirements to potable water and drinking water supply. The problem of the provision of the population with safe drinking water requires complex solution within the framework of the implementation of target programs adopted at the Federal and regional levels.

[Ab] Resumo:The use of groundwater in population water supply systems gains more and more importance because of increasing degradation of the quality of surface water sources. At the same time there are changed concepts on ubiquitous high quality of groundwater. The executed analysis offoreign and domestic literature allowed authors to determine the character and causes of negative changes in the composition of groundwater. In the large body of investigations there were established cause-and-effect relationships between a number of noninfectious (including cardiovascular and cancer) and infectious diseases and anthropogenic pollution and the natural composition of groundwater. In the article there is substantiated the formation of a new interdisciplinary scientific direction - medical hydrogeology. On the basis of current data on the medical and ecological significance of the quality, quantity and regime of the groundwater, geological conditions of the shaping of their composition, there was shown the need of the consideration of the hydrological situation in making water supply management solutions safe for the health of the population. In this regard, there were considered the interrelationship and interdependence of allied disciplines - hygiene, ecological toxicology and epidemiology, hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology. There was pointed the importance of the acquisition of based on hydrogeology medical specialists of the water supply profile for sharing with hygienists of the effective solution of tasks of the management of groundwater sources.

[Ab] Resumo:The present study is the first attempt to put forward the possible source(s) and health risk assessment of fluoride in Bahabad, central Iran. Fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.22 to 2.35 mg/L and 292-355 mg/kg in the groundwater and soil samples, respectively. Geochemical provenance techniques using major and rare earth elements in soils revealed that local shale is the most probable source rock of fluoride in the area. A two-step chemical fractionation method applied on soil samples demonstrated that residual and water-soluble fractions were the most probable modes of fluoride in soil, whereas exchangeable fraction had a minor role. The coefficient of aqueous migration showed that fluoride in the studied soils behaved as a mobile element. Moreover, the relative mobility indicated that soils played a more important role than rocks in releasing fluoride into groundwater. In groundwater medium, chemical weathering, evaporation, and ion exchange acted as the main geochemical controlling factors of fluoride enrichment. Findings of this study signify that the role of NaCl and NaSO -type waters should be considered more to recognize susceptible areas to fluoride contamination in groundwater. People in the study area are exposed to high levels of fluoride intake through drinking water, thus making dental fluorosis a major public health concern in the area. Scanning electron microscopy of the dentin's enamel showed morphological modifications (e.g., cracks and fissures) in residents' enamel structures. The results of this study may lead to suitable management strategies to mitigate the endemic fluorosis problem.

[Ab] Resumo:This study investigated 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation process and primary metabolic pathways associated with community structures of microorganism during groundwater recharge using reclaimed water. The attenuation rate is 1.58 times higher in wetting and drying alternative recharge (WDAR) than in continual recharge (CR). The primary biotransformation pathways of EE2 in WDAR system began with the oxidation of C-17 on ring D to form a ketone group, and D-ring was subsequently hydroxylated and cleaved. In the CR system, the metabolic pathway changed from the oxidation of C-17 on ring D to hydroxylation of C-4 on ring A, and ring A or B subsequently cleaved; this transition was related to DO, and the microbial community structure. Four hundred fifty four pyrosequencing of 16s rRNA genes indicated that the bacterial communities in the upper layer of the WDAR system were more diverse than those found in the bottom layer of the CR system; this result was reversed for archaea. Unweighted UniFrac and taxonomic analyses were conducted to relate the change in bacterial community structure to the metabolic pathway. Microorganism community diversity and structure were related to the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, EE2 and its intermediates in the system. Five known bacterial classes and one known archaeal class, five major bacterial genera and one major archaeal genus might be involved in EE2 degradation. The findings of this study provide an understanding of EE2 biodegradation in groundwater recharge areas under different recharging modes and can facilitate the prediction of the fate of EE2 in underground aquifers.

[Ab] Resumo:The present work focuses on understanding the provenance, prevalence and health perspective of As and F along with possible co-occurrence of uranium (U) in the aquifers of the Brahmaputra floodplains (BFP), India. Groundwater (n = 164) and sediment samples (n = 5) were obtained from the upper, middle and lower BFP. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) revealed the presence of As, U and Fe in the sediment matrix. Regression analysis showed a weaker relationship between As and F co-occurrence. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) suggested reductive dissolution of Fe (hydr)oxides responsible for As release in the BFP, especially in the upper and lower BFP. Bicarbonate appeared to compete with As oxyanions for adsorption on positively charged surfaces leading to As release. Arsenic desorption in presence of PO , F and HCO at elevated pH appeared greatest in the upper BFP, suggesting the highest potential for co-occurrence. Co-occurrence, were mainly in isolated aquifers of the upper BFP owing to desorption of adsorbed As and F from Fe (hydr)oxides at higher pH. Weathering and dissolution of clay minerals in the upper BFP, and competitive desorption in presence of HCO and PO in the middle and lower BFP, respectively, explain variabilities in F release. Amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides like ferrihydrite act as sinks of U. Concentrations of As and F will likely increase in the future as projected from the saturated levels of goethite and ferrihydrite. Hazard indices (HI) revealed that children (3-8 years) were at greater health risk than adults.

[Ab] Resumo:Trace organic compounds in effluents, water streams and aquifers are amply reported. However, the mobile pool of Emerging Organic Contaminants (EOCs) in the deep parts of the vadose zone is hard to estimate, due to difficulties in extraction of sufficient quantity of pore water. Here, we present a new methodology for depth profiling of EOCs in pore water by Positive Displacement Extraction (PDE): Pore water extraction from unsaturated soil samples is carried out by withdrawal of soil cores by direct-push drilling and infiltrating the core by organics free water. We show that EOC concentrations in the water eluted in the plateau region of the inverse breakthrough curve is equal to their pore water concentrations. The method was previously validated for DOC extraction, and here the scope of the methodology is extended to pore water extraction for organic pollutants analysis. Method characteristics and validation were carried out with atrazine, simazine, carbamazepine, venlafaxine, O-desmethylvenlafaxine and caffeine in the concentration range of several ng to several µg/liter. Validation was carried out by laboratory experiments on three different soils (sandy, sandy-clayey and clayey). Field studies in the vadose zone of a SAT system provided 27 m deep EOC profiles with less than 1.5 m spatial resolution. During the percolation treatment, carbamazepine remained persistent, while the other studied EOCs were attenuated to the extent of 50-99%.The highest degradation rate of all studied EOCs was in the aerobic zone. EOC levels based on PDE and extraction by centrifugation were compared, showing a positive bias for centrifugation.

[Ab] Resumo:The use of coal fly ash (CFA), municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWIBA) and flue gas desulfurization residue (FGDR) in road construction has become very common owing to its economical advantages. However, these residues may contain toxic constituents that pose an environmental risk if they leach out and flow through the soil, surface water and groundwater. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the ecotoxicity and groundwater impact of these residues before decisions can be made regarding their utilization for road construction. In this study, the physico-chemical characteristics, leaching and phytotoxicity of these residues were investigated. Specifically, multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the contributions of the leaching constituents of the CFA, MSWIBA and FGDR leachates to the germination index of wheat seeds. B, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe and Pb were found to be more toxic to the wheat seeds than the other heavy metals. Furthermore, the leached concentrations of the constituents from the CFA, MSWIBA and FGDR were below the regulatory threshold limits of the Chinese identification standard for hazardous wastes. Analyses conducted using a numerical groundwater model (WiscLEACH) indicated that the predicted field concentrations of metals from the CFA, MSWIBA and FGDR increased with time up to about 30years at the point of compliance, then decreased with time and distance. Overall, this study demonstrated that the risks resulting from MSWIBA, CFA and FGDR leaching could be assessed before its utilization for road construction, providing crucial information for the adoption of these alternative materials.

[Ab] Resumo:High-throughput sequencing was used for comparative analysis of microbial communities of the water and mat from the Hoito-Gol mesothermal mineral sulfide spring (Eastern Sayan Mountains, Buryat Republic). Activity of microbial communities was determined. While both spring biotopes were dominated by members of three bacterial phyla, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes, they differed drastically in the composition of predominant phylotypes (at the genus level). In the water, the organisms wide spread in aquatic'environments were predominant, mostly aerobic chemoorganotrophs of the generaAcinetobacter, Pe- dobacter, and Flavobacterium. In the microbial mat,;the organisms actively involved in the sulfur cycle predominated, including sulfur-reducing bacteria Sulfurospirillum, sulfate-reducing deltaproteobacteria, sulfur- oxidizing chemoautotrophic bacteria, anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria of,the phyla Chloroflexi and Chloro- bi, as well as purple bacteria belonging to the Q-, P--, and y-Proteobacteria. Microbial mats of the spring exhibited higher phylogenetic diversity compared to high-temperature mats containing photosynthetic microorganisms.

[Ab] Resumo:This study assessed the microbial diversity, activity, and composition of methane-oxidizing communities of a subarctic wetland in Russia,with mosaic cover of Sphagnum mosses and lichens of the genera Cladonia and Cetraria. Potential methane-oxidizing activity of peat sampled from lichen-dominated wetland sites was higher than that in the sites dominated by Sphagnum mosses. In peat from lichendominated sites, major bacterial groups identified by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes were the Acidobacteria (35.4-41.2% of total 16S rRNA gene reads), Alphaproteobacteria (19.1-24.2%), Gammaproteobacteria (7.9-11.1%), Actinobacteria (5.5-13.2%), Planctomycetes (7.2-9.5%), and Verrucomicrobia (5.1-9.5%). The distinctive feature of this community was high proportion of Subdivision 2 Acidobacteria, which are not char- acteristic for boreal Sphagnum peat bogs. Methanotrophic community composition was determined by mo- lecular analysis of the pmoA gene encoding particulate methane monooxygenase. Most (-80%) of all pmoA gene fragments revealed in peat from lichen-dominated sites belonged to the phylogenetic lineage represented by a microaerobic spiral-shaped methanotroph, "Candidatus Methylospira mobilis." Members of the genus Methylocystis, which are typical inhabitants of boreal Sphagnum peat bogs, represented only a minor group of indigenous methanotrophs. The specific feature of a methanotrophic community in peat from lichen-dominated sites was the presence of uncultivated USCa (Upland Soil Cluster alpha) methanotrophs, which are typical for acidic upland soils showing atmospheric methane oxidation. The methanotrophic community composition in lichen-dominated sites of a tundra wetland, therefore, was markedly different from that in bo- real Sphagnum peat bogs.

[Ab] Resumo:Bacterial mats formed by a colorless sulfur bacterium Thioploca sp. in the area of the Posolski Bank cold methane seep (southern Baikal) were -studied using electron microscopy and phylogenetic analysis. Morphologically the bacteria were identified as Thioploca ingrica.- Confocal microscopy of DAPI-stained samples revealed numerous rod-shaped, filamentous, and spiral microorganisms in the sheaths, as well as in- side and between the trichomes. Transmission electron microscopy revealed nonvacuolated bacteria and small cells-without cell envelopes within the sheath. Bacteria with pronounced intracytoplasmic membranes characteristic; of type I methanotrophs were observed at the outer side of the sheath. Based on analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the following phyla were idenified in the sheath community: Bacteroidetes, Nitro- spira, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia,'y-, and 6-Proteobacteria, Euryarchaeota, Crenarchaeota, and Thaumarchaeota, as well as anammox bacteria. A hypothetical scheme of matter flows in the Lake Baikal bacterial mats was proposed based on the data on metabolism of the cultured homologues.
