[Ab] Resumo:Most of the tools and diagnosis models of Masticatory Efficiency (ME) are not well documented or severely limited to simple image processing approaches. This study presents a novel expert system for ME assessment based on automatic recognition of mixture patterns of masticated two-coloured chewing gums using a combination of computational intelligence and image processing techniques. The hypotheses tested were that the proposed system could accurately relate specimens to the number of chewing cycles, and that it could identify differences between the mixture patterns of edentulous individuals prior and after complete denture treatment. This study enrolled 80 fully-dentate adults (41 females and 39 males, 25 ± 5 years of age) as the reference population; and 40 edentulous adults (21 females and 19 males, 72 ± 8.9 years of age) for the testing group. The system was calibrated using the features extracted from 400 samples covering 0, 10, 15, and 20 chewing cycles. The calibrated system was used to automatically analyse and classify a set of 160 specimens retrieved from individuals in the testing group in two appointments. The ME was then computed as the predicted number of chewing strokes that a healthy reference individual would need to achieve a similar degree of mixture measured against the real number of cycles applied to the specimen. The trained classifier obtained a Mathews Correlation Coefficient score of 0.97. ME measurements showed almost perfect agreement considering pre- and post-treatment appointments separately (κ ≥ 0.95). Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed that a complete denture treatment for edentulous patients elicited a statistically significant increase in the ME measurements (Z = -2.31, p < 0.01). We conclude that the proposed expert system proved able and reliable to accurately identify patterns in mixture and provided useful ME measurements.

[Ab] Resumo:We analyzed feeding biomechanics in pitheciine monkeys (Pithecia, Chiropotes, Cacajao), a clade that specializes on hard-husked unripe fruit (sclerocarpy) and resistant seeds (seed predation). We tested the hypothesis that pitheciine crania are well-suited to generate and withstand forceful canine and molar biting, with the prediction that they generate bite forces more efficiently and better resist masticatory strains than the closely-related Callicebus, which does not specialize on unripe fruits and/or seeds. We also tested the hypothesis that Callicebus-Pithecia-Chiropotes-Cacajao represent a morphocline of increasing sclerocarpic specialization with respect to biting leverage and craniofacial strength, consistent with anterior dental morphology. We found that pitheciines have higher biting leverage than Callicebus and are generally more resistant to masticatory strain. However, Cacajao was found to experience high strain magnitudes in some facial regions. We therefore found limited support for the morphocline hypothesis, at least with respect to the mechanical performance metrics examined here. Biting leverage in Cacajao was nearly identical (or slightly less than) in Chiropotes and strain magnitudes during canine biting were more likely to follow a Cacajao-Chiropotes-Pithecia trend of increasing strength, in contrast to the proposed morphocline. These results could indicate that bite force efficiency and derived anterior teeth were selected for in pitheciines at the expense of increased strain magnitudes. However, our results for Cacajao potentially reflect reduced feeding competition offered by allopatry with other pitheciines, which allows Cacajao species to choose from a wider variety of fruits at various stages of ripeness, leading to reduction in the selection for robust facial features. We also found that feeding biomechanics in sympatric Pithecia and Chiropotes are consistent with data on food structural properties and observations of dietary niche separation, with the former being well-suited for the regular molar crushing of hard seeds and the latter better adapted for breaching hard fruits.

[Ab] Resumo:Advances in imaging and modeling facilitate the calculation of biomechanical forces in biological specimens. These factors play a significant role during ontogenetic development of cichlid pharyngeal jaws, a key innovation responsible for one of the most prolific species diversifications in recent times. MicroCT imaging of radiopaque-stained vertebrate embryos were used to accurately capture the spatial relationships of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus in two cichlid species (Haplochromis elegans and Amatitlania nigrofasciata) for the purpose of creating a time series of developmental stages using finite element models, which can be used to assess the effects of biomechanical forces present in a system at multiple points of its ontogeny. Changes in muscle vector orientations, bite forces, force on the neurocranium where cartilage originates, and stress on upper pharyngeal jaws are analyzed in a comparative context. In addition, microCT scanning revealed the presence of previously unreported cement glands in A. nigrofasciata. The data obtained provide an underrepresented dimension of information on physical forces present in developmental processes and assist in interpreting the role of developmental dynamics in evolution.

[Ab] Resumo:OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the factors associated with inadequate chewing in an adult and elderly population of a city in the southern region of Brazil. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on a population home-based inquiry (DCH-POP) in southern Brazil. Individuals were interviewed by trained interviewers to create a standardized procedure. In a pilot study, the Questionnaire of Human Communication Disorders (DCH-POP) was created and validated to identify self-reported speech and language, swallowing and hearing disorders. The outcome was dichotomized into either having adequate chewing or not, as assessed by a series of questions about chewing ability. Analyses of absolute and relative frequencies were measured according to the studied variables. A Poisson regression was applied at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: A total of 1,246 people were interviewed. Inadequate chewing was found in 52 (5.6%) individuals, with a higher prevalence in the elderly (11.8%) than in adults (5.2%). In the final model, the following factors were associated with inadequate chewing: being 61 years of age or older (prevalence ratio or PR=9.03; 95% CI: 1.20-67.91), loss of teeth and use of unadjusted prosthesis (PR=3.50; 95% CI: 1.54-7.95), preference for foods of soft consistency (PR=9.34; 95% CI:4.66-8.70) and difficulty in nasal breathing (PR=2.82; 95% CI: 1.31-6.06). CONCLUSION: Age, oral health status through dental prosthesis, preference for foods of soft consistency and difficulty breathing through the nose were factors associated with chewing inability in adults and the elderly.

[Ab] Resumo:OBJECTIVE: Dynamic loading is a more important predictor for the clinical longevity of ceramic crowns than static loading. However, dynamic loading machines are costly and mostly have only one test station. The SD Mechatronik Chewing Simulator (formerly Willytec) may be a cost-effective alternative to evaluate the fatigue resistance of metal ceramic crowns. METHOD: Four metal ceramic materials were tested on lower first molar crowns: GC InitiaI, Creation (Willy Geller), IPS InLine (Ivoclar Vivadent) and the new low-fusion IPS Style Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent). The ceramic material was manually layered on frames made of the nickel-chromium alloy 4all (Ivoclar Vivadent) by using a silicone mould. The crowns were adhesively luted to PMMA dies. Dynamic loading was carried out with a SD Mechatronik Chewing Simulator using additional bars with weights. A steel antagonist (Ø 4mm) with 40mm/s downward speed hit the disto-buccal cusp of the crown with minimal impulse while sliding for a distance of 0.7mm. The starting load was 250N. The forces at each load level had been verified with a 3D force sensor (Kistler). Four crowns per group and load were submitted to four decreasing load levels for 200,000 cycles with a resulting simulation frequency of 0.9Hz and simultaneous thermocycling (5°C/55°C) until all four crowns no longer showed chippings. Statistical analyses had been carried out using an exponential, a Weibull and a lognormal model. The fatigue resistance was defined as the maximal load for which one would observe less than 1% failure after 200,000 cycles. In addition to the fatigue testing of the molar crowns, simulations of finite element method (FEM) were conducted in order to investigate the influence of the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) between the PMMA die and the molar crown on the fatigue resistance. RESULTS: The 3D-force measurements revealed that the summarised forces were very similar to the force of the dead weights that were put on the bars. The failure modes consisted of cracks and small and big chippings. Chi-square test and Gamma revealed no statistically significant differences between the four test materials in relation to the failure mode. At 250N all materials showed chippings within the ceramic or down to the metal frame, while at lower loads there were differences. The estimated fatigue resistance was 68N for GC Initial, 88N for Creation, 96N for IPS Style Ceram, and 105N for IPS InLine, when using a Weibull model and considering all possible events. Furthermore, FEM simulations revealed that the maximum values of the maximum principal stress were 90 MPa for the thermocycling and 225 MPa for the external load. CONCLUSION: The SD Mechatronik Chewing Simulator is an adequate and cost-effective tool to test layered PFM crowns for fatigue resistance. The test method and the chewing simulator can be used for ceramic on metal, ceramic on zirconia and monolithic ceramic materials.

[Ab] Resumo:Dental microwear of four postcanine teeth of Exaeretodon argentinus was analyzed using both two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) methods to infer their masticatory jaw movements. Results of both methods were congruent, showing that linear microwear features (scratches) were well aligned and mostly directed to the antero-posterior direction in all four teeth examined. These findings support the palinal masticatory jaw movement, which was inferred in previous studies based on the observation of gross morphology of wear facets. In contrast, the lack of detection of lateral scratches confirmed the absence of the lateral jaw movement that was also proposed by a previous study. Considering previous microwear studies on cynodonts, palinal jaw movements observed in Exaeretodon evolved within cynognathian cynodonts from the fully orthal jaw movement of its basal member. Although there are currently only three studies of dental microwear of non-mammalian cynodonts including the present study, microwear analysis is a useful tool for the reconstruction of masticatory jaw movement and its future application to various cynodonts will shed light on the evolutionary process of jaw movement towards the mammalian condition in more detail.

[Ab] Resumo:A new general use oral assessment sheet (OAS), comprising three items each in three categories (i.e., oral hygiene, biting and chewing, and oral function), was developed to improve the oral health of older adults requiring nursing care. Seventy-nine care workers used the assessment sheet to evaluate oral conditions in 188 institutionalized older adults. Forty-five care workers and three dental professionals then assessed oral conditions in 45 institutionalized older adults using the test-retest method before and after dental professional guidance. Cronbach's alpha of the OAS was 0.72, and 0.65, 0.57, and 0.82 for the three subcategories of oral hygiene, biting and chewing, and oral function, respectively. After dental professional intervention, absolute and relative agreement coefficients increased to more than 0.6 and 0.89, respectively. Reliability and validity of the OAS were verified, and difficulties in oral assessment experienced by care workers were identified. [Res Gerontol Nurs. 2017; 10(5):234-239.].

[Ab] Resumo:OBJECTIVES: This study tested hypotheses relating intraspecific variation in occlusal morphology and intraspecific variation in jaw movements during feeding. Gape cycle kinematic variation was hypothesized to correlate with gape cycle number within a chewing sequence as well as with food toughness and stiffness. Gape cycle kinematic variation was also hypothesized to correlate with variation in occlusal area, slope, and volume. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-six adult human subjects chewed four foods with varying material properties while their jaw movements were recorded using three-dimensional coordinates of facial markers captured with a Vicon camera system. Post-canine occlusal morphology of each subject was quantified in ArcGIS using dental topographic analysis of dental casts. RESULTS: Gape cycle duration did not vary with gape cycle number, food toughness, or food stiffness. Gape cycle vertical and lateral displacement correlated negatively with gape cycle number, while foods with higher toughness and Young's modulus had greater jaw vertical and lateral displacement. Subjects with steeper occlusal slopes had longer gape cycle durations and greater amounts of vertical displacement during the slow closing phase of the gape cycle. DISCUSSION: The results suggest that gape cycle durations are relatively consistent despite changes in food properties and gape cycle number, while occlusal slope affects gape cycle duration and vertical displacement during inferred occlusal contact. However, gape cycle number and bolus properties explain greater amounts of kinematic variation than does occlusal morphology.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: This study characterized the changes in quality and quantity of saliva, and changes in the salivary metabolomic profile, to understand the effects of masticatory stimulation. METHODS: Stimulated and unstimulated saliva samples were collected from 55 subjects and salivary hydrophilic metabolites were comprehensively quantified using capillary electrophoresis-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. RESULTS: In total, 137 metabolites were identified and quantified. The concentrations of 44 metabolites in stimulated saliva were significantly higher than those in unstimulated saliva. Pathway analysis identified the upregulation of the urea cycle and synthesis and degradation pathways of glycine, serine, cysteine and threonine in stimulated saliva. A principal component analysis revealed that the effect of masticatory stimulation on salivary metabolomic profiles was less dependent on sample population sex, age, and smoking. The concentrations of only 1 metabolite in unstimulated saliva, and of 3 metabolites stimulated saliva, showed significant correlation with salivary secretion volume, indicating that the salivary metabolomic profile and salivary secretion volume were independent factors. CONCLUSIONS: Masticatory stimulation affected not only salivary secretion volume, but also metabolite concentration patterns. A low correlation between the secretion volume and these patterns supports the conclusion that the salivary metabolomic profile may be a new indicator to characterize masticatory stimulation.

[Ab] Resumo:OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of altered masticatory loading on Indian hedgehog (Ihh)-parathyroid hormone-like related protein (PThrP) pathway in the condylar cartilage of growing rabbits. METHODS: A total of 48 10-day-old rabbits were randomly divided into two groups and fed different kinds of food, such as solid diet and soft diet. The animals were sacrificed after 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Difference of Ihh and PThrP expression levels induced by altered masticatory loading was tested by hematoxylin-eosin (HE), immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: The thickness of condylar cartilage and expression levels of Ihh and PThrP proteins and mRNA of the solid diet groups exceeded those of the soft diet groups. The decreasing tendencies of the expression levels of Ihh and PThrP proteins and mRNA were observed at 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Low masticatory loading may delay or inhibit the development of condylar cartilage and its growing factors Ihh and PThrP. Therefore, masticatory loading plays an important role in the development of condylar cartilage.
