[Ab] Resumo:This paper surveys the literature on forensic face recognition (FFR), with a particular focus on the strength of evidence as used in a court of law. FFR is the use of biometric face recognition for several applications in forensic science. It includes scenarios of ID verification and open-set identification, investigation and intelligence, and evaluation of the strength of evidence. We present FFR from operational, tactical, and strategic perspectives. We discuss criticism of FFR and we provide an overview of research efforts from multiple perspectives that relate to the domain of FFR. Finally, we sketch possible future directions for FFR.

To meet this growing demand, and as exemplified in the five articles in this special section, character development scholars are drawing from a range of academic disciplines to push beyond the traditional boundaries of the science of character development. These articles highlight important trends in character research, including the co-development of a subset of character strengths, the articulation of developmental trajectories of character, the use of advanced methodological approaches, and the implications for education. Studies such as these are critically important for establishing the research base that will be used to design the character development programs of tomorrow.

[Ab] Resumo:At the 2016 annual meeting of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA), the treatment recommendations committee summarized its work and presented its plans for future updates. The committee announced a partnership between GRAPPA and Guideline Central to develop a pocket reference guide to the treatment recommendations. Because key new data appear regularly, the group discussed publishing periodic updates of the recommendations online through the GRAPPA Website as well as a goal of publishing another major update of the recommendations in 2020. The committee also announced that 2 GRAPPA members were awarded a grant from the International League of Associations for Rheumatology to look at potential adaptations of international treatment recommendations for resource-poor settings, particularly in South America and Africa.

[Ab] Resumo:The 2016 annual meeting of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) was held in Miami, Florida, USA, and attended by rheumatologists, dermatologists, and representatives of biopharmaceutical companies and patient groups. As in previous years, GRAPPA members held a symposium for trainees to discuss their research in psoriatic disease with experts in the field. A strategic planning session was convened by the Steering Committee this year to review the work of GRAPPA since its inception in 2003. Other subjects featured during the annual meeting included a partnership with KPMG LLP (UK) to conduct interviews at research centers worldwide to analyze the process of care in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA); a discussion of the effects of interleukin 17-related pathways on the skin and joints in psoriasis and PsA; summaries of recently published treatment recommendations and related guides; 4 separate discussions of psoriasis patient examinations; updates from working groups in the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology and the International Dermatology Outcome Measures; a discussion of patient centricity from GRAPPA's patient research partners; and an update of research and educational projects from GRAPPA. In this prologue, we introduce the papers that summarize that meeting.

[Ab] Resumo:We present a model combining the two regulatory stages relevant to the approval of a new health technology: the authorisation of its commercialisation and the insurer's decision about whether to reimburse its cost. We show that the degree of uncertainty concerning the true value of the insurer's maximum willingness to pay for a unit increase in effectiveness has a non-monotonic impact on the optimal price of the innovation, the firm's expected profit and the optimal sample size of the clinical trial. A key result is that there exists a range of values of the uncertainty parameter over which a reduction in uncertainty benefits the firm, the insurer and patients. We consider how different policy parameters may be used as incentive mechanisms, and the incentives to invest in R&D for marginal projects such as those targeting rare diseases. The model is calibrated using data on a new treatment for cystic fibrosis.

[Ab] Resumo:This study performed two phases of analysis to shed light on the performance and thematic evolution of China's quantum cryptography (QC) research. First, large-scale research publication metadata derived from QC research published from 2001-2017 was used to examine the research performance of China relative to that of global peers using established quantitative and qualitative measures. Second, this study identified the thematic evolution of China's QC research using co-word cluster network analysis, a computational science mapping technique. The results from the first phase indicate that over the past 17 years, China's performance has evolved dramatically, placing it in a leading position. Among the most significant findings is the exponential rate at which all of China's performance indicators (i.e., Publication Frequency, citation score, H-index) are growing. China's H-index (a normalized indicator) has surpassed all other countries' over the last several years. The second phase of analysis shows how China's main research focus has shifted among several QC themes, including quantum-key-distribution, photon-optical communication, network protocols, and quantum entanglement with an emphasis on applied research. Several themes were observed across time periods (e.g., photons, quantum-key-distribution, secret-messages, quantum-optics, quantum-signatures); some themes disappeared over time (e.g., computer-networks, attack-strategies, bell-state, polarization-state), while others emerged more recently (e.g., quantum-entanglement, decoy-state, unitary-operation). Findings from the first phase of analysis provide empirical evidence that China has emerged as the global driving force in QC. Considering China is the premier driving force in global QC research, findings from the second phase of analysis provide an understanding of China's QC research themes, which can provide clarity into how QC technologies might take shape. QC and science and technology policy researchers can also use these findings to trace previous research directions and plan future lines of research.
