[Ab] Resumo:Cytogenetic homeostasis ofathletes involved in hand-to-hand armyfighting, depending on the outcome of the fight and the level of aggressiveness has been studied. Status of the genetic apparatus in athletes was evaluated in buccal epithelium with the use of micronucleus test, which is widely usedfor the determination of the influence of various factors on the genetic stability of the organism. Psychological testing of athletes was executed with the use of Spielberger's State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory scale, Bass-Darky questionnaire for the diagnostics of aggression and hostile reactions, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire test for the evaluation ofpsychic conditions and method of U.P. Ilyin and P.A. Kovalev for the identification of the propensity to conflictness and aggressiveness (positive and negative) as the personal characteristics. The place taken by the athlete on the competition was shown to have an impact on the frequency of buccal epithelium cells with nuclear abnormalities (micronuclei, perinuclear vacuoles, notches, protrusions "tongue" and "broken egg"). Losers have nuclear aberrations more than winners. At that in athletes with higher aggressiveness and its attendant psychological characteristics the influence of the outcome of the competition on the number of cells with aberrations core is more pronounced.

[Ab] Resumo:The presented in the article the analysis of water schedule in student-athletes showed a low level of water consumption culture and the irrationality of the actual water schedule. According to the results of the survey revealed that 86.7% of boys-athletes and 67.2% of girls athletes were revealed to fail to keep a certain water schedule; 98.3% student-athletes are in a state of dehydration of the body. There are established correlations between the presence of dehydration of the body and symptoms such as fatigue and decreased performance (correlation coefficient 0.594, p = 0.01), the appearance of dryness in the morning on an empty stomach (correlation coefficient 0.512, p = 0.01).

[Ab] Resumo:CONTEXT: About 10% of Japanese female athletes are afflicted by menstrually-related edema, mainly in the lower limbs, and, with few studies on this problem, the effect on performance remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively evaluate fluid retention in the calf in female students over their menstrual cycle using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to determine the relationship of MRI changes and athletic performance. DESIGN: The menstrual cycle was divided into 5 phases: menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, early luteal, and late luteal with sampling done in either morning (AM) or afternoon (PM) sessions. At each phase, MRI of the calf (7:00-8:00, 14:00-16:00), body composition and hormones (7:00-8:00), and athletic performance (14:00-16:00) were evaluated. PARTICIPANTS: 13 adult healthy Japanese female students with eumenorrhea. RESULTS: Estradiol levels decreased significantly in the menstrual phase and the follicular phase compared to the early luteal phase (P = 0.001, P = 0.024 respectively). Menstrual phase estradiol levels were significantly lower compared to the ovulatory phase (P = 0.015), and the late luteal phase (P = 0.003). Progesterone levels decreased significantly in the menstrual phase and the follicular phase compared to the ovulatory phase (P = 0.012, P = 0.009 respectively), the early luteal phase (both P = 0.007), and the late luteal phase (P = 0.028, P = 0.029 respectively), and it along with a significant decrease in the ovulatory phase compared to the early luteal phase (P = 0.010). AM T2 signals were significantly lower in the menstrual phase compared to the ovulatory phase (P = 0.043) but not other phases. PM T2 signals increased significantly in the menstrual phase compared to the follicular phase (P = 0.003), ovulatory phase (P = 0.009), and the late luteal phase (P = 0.032), and the difference between the AM and PM values increased significantly in the menstrual phase compared to the other 4 phases (P<0.01). A negative correlation between fluid retention and agility was observed. CONCLUSION: In female students fluid retention during the menstrual phase could be a factor that influences athletic agility.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: Limited research has evaluated risk factors for low bone mineral density (BMD) in male adolescent athletes. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate predictors of low BMD (defined as BMD Z-score <-1.0) in a sample of male adolescent distance runner and non-runner athletes. METHODS: Male adolescent athletes completed a survey characterising sports participation, nutrition, stress fracture history, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-measured BMD and body composition. Independent t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) evaluated group differences; logistic regression evaluated low BMD risk factors. RESULTS: Runners (n=51) exhibited a lower body weight (p=0.02), body mass index (BMI) (kg/m ) (p=0.02), per cent expected weight (p=0.02) and spine BMD Z-score (p=0.002) compared with non-runners (n=18). Single risk factors of low BMD included <85% expected weight (OR=5.6, 95% CI 1.4 to 22.5) and average weekly mileage >30 in the past year (OR=6.4, 95% CI 1.5 to 27.1). The strongest two-variable and three-variable risk factors included weekly mileage >30+ stress fracture history (OR=17.3, 95% CI 1.6 to 185.6) and weekly mileage >30+<85% expected weight + stress fracture history (OR=17.3, 95% CI 1.6 to 185.6), respectively. Risk factors were cumulative when predicting low BMD (including <85% expected weight, weekly mileage >30, stress fracture history and <1 serving of calcium-rich food/day): 0-1 risk factors (11.1%), 2 risk factors (42.9%), or 3-4 risk factors (80.0%), p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Male adolescent runners exhibited lower body weight, BMI and spine BMD Z-score values. The risk of low BMD displayed a graded relationship with increasing risk factors, highlighting the importance of using methods to optimise bone mass in this population.

[Ab] Resumo:Previous research on action memory showed the advantage for performing the action in memorising the action phrases. We tested if performing the action would help participants with or without motor expertise to memorise the novel action poses. Thirty novel action poses performed by an expert were photographed to constitute memory and interference stimuli. Eighty college students observed to remember the randomly displayed stimuli; however, half were asked to perform the displayed stimuli. Both free-recall and recognition tests were administered immediately and 24 h after the memory task. The results showed that acting was better than observing for memorising the novel action poses, which not only promoted the absolute retention but also alleviated the retention loss caused by interference. Motor expertise enhanced the overall memory performance by promoting a deeper motor encoding. Based on our results, novices should act with (rather than just observe) the model to learn novel motor skills.

[Ab] Resumo:Knee strength ratios are related to the movement patterns, sport-specific training and knee injuries in athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the ratios in the concentric isokinetic strength of the hamstrings and quadriceps and the isometric strength of the knee extensors. In female basketball players (n = 14) and female volleyball players (n = 12) were evaluated: the hamstrings to quadriceps peak torque ratio (H/Q) and side-to-side peak torque ratio (TR) for hamstrings and quadriceps; the ratio of the maximal bilateral strength to the summed maximal unilateral strength (B/U) and side-to-side maximal strength ratio (SR) for knee extensors. For the H/Q values, a 2 × 2 × 3 mixed-factorial analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test were computed. The H/Q values increased from 48.0 (3.9)% at 60°/s to 70.4 (7.9)% at 300°/s. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the H/Q values between 300°/s and 180°/s, 300°/s and 60°/s in basketball and volleyball athletes, and between 180°/s and 60°/s only in basketball athletes (p < .05). Significantly higher H/Q results at 60°/s demonstrated basketball players than volleyball players (p < .05). Differences in the TR and SR mean values ranged from 4.4% to 8.6% and indicated no significant side-to-side strength deficits (p > .05). In both groups, greater isometric strength developed bilaterally was found (B/U > 100%). The findings revealed the magnitude of knee strength ratios in female athletes determined by sport-specific movements in basketball and volleyball. This study highlighted the importance of the bilateral strength deficit and muscular balance between the hamstrings and quadriceps in basketball and volleyball athletes in activities related to their movement patterns and specific training.

[Ab] Resumo:RATIONALE: Considering the risk of osteoarthritis following resection of a horizontally torn meniscus of the knee, repairing and preserving the meniscus as much as possible is preferred. We report 3 cases of restoration of horizontally torn menisci using a novel arthroscopic method we have called "all-inside interleaf vertical suture" that afforded preservation. PATIENT CONCERNS: The 3 patients (aged 14, 17, and 21 years) had knee pain through sports activity. DIAGNOSES: All patients had horizontal tears in the posteromedial part of the meniscus. INTERVENTIONS: The method uses Fast-Fix, whereby a first anchor is inserted from the tibial surface of the tear's superior leaflet and a second anchor is inserted from the femoral surface of the tear's inferior leaflet, and the 2 leaflets are closed using vertical suture. In all cases, the suture knots were embedded between the superior leaflet and inferior leaflet, avoiding contact with the articular cartilage, and superior leaflet and inferior leaflet crimping was good. OUTCOMES: All 3 were able to resume competing in sport and ≥ 1 year after surgery they had no pain and their postoperative mean Lysholm scores were 99.7. There were no complications or recurrence. On magnetic resonance imaging, the signal intensity of all the horizontal tears was high before surgery but low after surgery, suggesting that the repaired tear was healing. LESSONS: The all-inside interleaf vertical suture procedure is a new surgical technique that can repair posteromedial horizontal meniscal tears of the knee of young people by easy crimping of the superior and inferior leaflets without the suture knots causing complications.

[Ab] Resumo:We report a case of concurrent bilateral hip arthroscopy for symptomatic bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) performed under the single anesthesia on an elite rugby player. A 27-year-old rugby player who played for a top league had bilateral hip joint pain. Physical examination revealed bilateral tenderness in the anterior area of the hips, with positive impingement signs. Based on the findings of hip radiography and magnetic resonance imaging, the patient's symptoms were diagnosed as bilateral FAI with hip labral tears. Bilateral hip arthroscopy under the single anesthesia was performed due to refractory symptoms. He returned to regular rugby games without any symptoms in either hip. Bilateral hip arthroscopic surgery under the single anesthesia should be an effective treatment for typical and symptomatic FAI, even in elite athletes.

[Ab] Resumo:The development of talented athletes is a priority for many countries across the world, including China. A validated Chinese 5-factor Talent Development Environment Questionnaire (TDEQ-5) would go some way in helping researchers and practitioners investigate talent development systems within China from an evidence-based perspective. For this purpose, the 25-item English TDEQ-5 was translated to Chinese through a standardised process. The translated scale was then administered to 538 talented Chinese youth athletes. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed adequate model fit of the scale. The internal reliability, concurrent and discriminant validity, and test-retest reliability of the scale were adequately supported. The scale was also invariant across gender. It is recommended that the Chinese TDEQ-5 can be used with confidence in both applied and research settings.

[Ab] Resumo:Although experts have noted that adolescent athletes should be educated about concussions to improve their safety, there is no agreement on the most effective strategy to disseminate concussion education. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and assess a concussion education programme. More precisely, four interactive oral presentations were delivered to high school student-athletes (N = 35, M = 15.94, SD = 0.34) in a large urban centre. Participants completed a questionnaire at three time-points during the season to measure changes in their knowledge (CK) and attitudes (CA) of concussions, and focus group interviews were conducted following the concussion education programme. Questionnaire data revealed participants' post-intervention CK scores were higher than their pre-intervention scores. During the focus groups, the student-athletes said they acquired CK about the role of protective equipment and symptom variability, and in terms of CA, they intended to avoid dangerous in-game collisions in the future. Our study was the first to create and deliver a concussion education intervention across multiple time-points, and to use mixed-methods in its assessment. These findings may be of interest to researchers, practitioners and stakeholders in sport who are invested in making the sport environment safer through concussion education and awareness.
