[Ab] Resumo:Success in life is determined to a large extent by school performance so it is important to understand the effect of the factors that influence it. In this exploratory study, in addition to cognitive abilities, we attempt to link measures of preferences with outcomes of school performance. We measured in an incentivized way risk, time, social and competitive preferences and cognitive abilities of university students to look for associations between these measures and two important academic outcome measures: exam results and GPA. We find consistently that cognitive abilities (proxied by the Cognitive Reflection Test) are very well correlated with school performance. Regarding non-cognitive skills, we report suggestive evidence for many of our measured preferences. We used two alternative measures of time preference: patience and present bias. Present bias explains exam grades better, while patience explains GPA relatively better. Both measures of time preferences have a non-linear relation to school performance. Competitiveness matters, as students, who opt for a more competitive payment scheme in our experimental task have a higher average GPA. We observe also that risk-averse students perform a little better than more risk-tolerant students. That makes sense in case of multiple choice exams, because more risk-tolerant students may want to try to pass the exam less prepared, as the possibility of passing an exam just by chance is not zero. Finally, we have also detected that cooperative preferences-the amount of money offered in a public good game-associates strongly with GPA in a non-linear way. Students who offered around half of their possible amounts had significantly higher GPAs than those, who offered none or all their money.

[Ab] Resumo:INTRODUCTION: Refractive error is an important cause of correctable visual impairment in the worldwide with a global distribution of 1.75% to 20.7% among schoolchildren. Teacher's knowledge about refractive error play an important role in encouraging students to seek treatment that helps in reducing the burden of visual impairment. OBJECTIVE: To determine knowledge, attitude and associated factors among primary school teachers regarding refractive error in school children in Gondar city. METHODS: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted on 565 primary school teachers in Gondar city using pretested and structured self-administered questionnaire. For processing and analysis, SPSS version 20 was used and variables which had a P value of <0.05 in the multivariable analysis were considered as statistically significant. RESULT: A total of 565 study subjects were participated in this study with a mean age of 42.05 ± 12.01 years. Of these study participants 55.9% (95% CI: 51.9, 59.8) had good knowledge and 57.2% (95% CI: 52.9, 61.4) had favorable attitude towards refractive error. History of spectacle use [AOR = 2.13 (95% CI: 1.32, 3.43)], history of eye examination [AOR = 1.67 (95% CI: 1.19, 2.34)], training on eye health [AOR = 1.94 (95% CI; 1.09, 3.43)] and 11-20 years of experience [AOR = 2.53 (95% CI: 1.18, 5.43)] were positively associated with knowledge. Whereas being male [AOR = 2.03 (95% CI: 1.37, 3.01)], older age [AOR = 3.05 (95% CI: 1.07, 8.72)], 31-40 years of experience [AOR = 0.23 (95% CI: 0.07, 0.72)], private school type [AOR = 1.76 (95% CI: 1.06, 2.93)] and 5th -8th teaching category [AOR = 1.54 (95% CI: 1.05, 2.24)] were associated with attitude. CONCLUSION: Knowledge and attitude of study subjects were low which needs training of teachers about the refractive error.

[Ab] Resumo:Among the risk factors that have priority in shaping the health of the population, a leading place is held by a rational nutrition. Presented results indicate to the absence of a stable group eating regularly, with the rational regularity and having all the necessary meals and the recommended food set. In the population of the adult people of the city of Irkutsk there is revealed the role of the nutritional factor in the formation of morbidity rate level of the adult population. It was found that the risk of diseases of the circulatory system accounted of 2.5 (95% CI: 2.1-3.6), for infectious and parasitic diseases - 2.4 (95% CI: 1.7-3.5), for the endocrine system - 2.2 (95% CI: 1.4-3.4), andfor the urinary system - 2.3 (95% CI: 1,7-3,0).

[Ab] Resumo:The presented in the article the analysis of water schedule in student-athletes showed a low level of water consumption culture and the irrationality of the actual water schedule. According to the results of the survey revealed that 86.7% of boys-athletes and 67.2% of girls athletes were revealed to fail to keep a certain water schedule; 98.3% student-athletes are in a state of dehydration of the body. There are established correlations between the presence of dehydration of the body and symptoms such as fatigue and decreased performance (correlation coefficient 0.594, p = 0.01), the appearance of dryness in the morning on an empty stomach (correlation coefficient 0.512, p = 0.01).

[Ab] Resumo:In recent years, in sanitary science the interest in issues of young people has dramatically increased, that has been actualized by the necessity of a new objective assessment of the role of the youth in modern sanitary-ecological, sociocultural and economic processes. In this regard, a special interest is aroused by young students, the health of whom is determined largely by the condition of the habitat. So far complex assessment ofriskfactors in urbanized areas, prioritization of impacts, the establishment ofpriority impacts, the detection of informative territorial environmentally dependent indices ofpopulation health are presented to be important tasks in the solution of the regional challenges. The aim of this work was the assessment of the state of health of students of the Bratsk State University, residing in conditions of ecological trouble. In the territory of the city of Bratsk the environmental situation is characterized by long term multi-component air pollution with highly toxic vehicular and industrial emissions. In the work throughout the 4 years following-up there was executed an assessment of the physical development of students, there was determined structure and revealed the an increased level of morbidity rate of students of Bratsk state University in terms of educational space, which is characteristic for territories of ecological trouble in the city of Bratsk. Parameters of physical development of students in dynamics of training were established to be not liable to variation. It confirms the stability of the morphological signs as compared to functional ones. In the analysis of dynamics of indices of the harmonicity ofphysical development there was revealed a gain in the proportion of harmoniously developed students by the end of training. Physiometric indices of students to the fourth course of training were characterized by the increase offunctional capabilities of the respiratory system.The indices of the cardiovascular system performance had a tendency to the growth of the hypertensive response in boys and the increase in the number of people with normotensive response to physical stress by the end of training. To the IV course of training there was observed the increase in the number of young boys with stringency of mechanisms of adaptation to stress, whereas in young girls satisfactory adaptation was seen.

[Ab] Resumo:This article discusses the construction and validation of an instrument to gauge community college students' confidence to perform in the global marketplace. The instrument was designed to capture students' beliefs in their own abilities to successfully carry out job-related tasks in cross-cultural work environments that are globally-interconnected and constantly at flux. The instrument items emerged from a comprehensive review of literature, nationwide workforce skills initiatives, rounds of expert panel analyses, and focus groups. Items were formulated within Bandura's framework of self-efficacy, and the instrument was analyzed with Rasch measurement. The Rasch analysis, conducted on a sample of 741 students, provided evidence of the content validity of the items, the generalizability of the measure, and its external validity. The instrument can offer useful feedback to community college internationalization-focused staff in their efforts to assess outcomes of international initiatives for community college students, thus supporting program assessment, evaluation of student growth, and institutional decision-making.

[Ab] Resumo:Students may experience considerable fear and stress in school settings, and based on Dweck's (2006) notion of "mindset" we hypothesized that fear introduces qualitative changes in students' self-concepts. Hypotheses were tested on 3847 third-grade students from nine Iberoamerican countries (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Spain, and Venezuela), who completed Murillo's (2007) adaptation of Marsh' (1988) SDQ-I. Rasch scaling indicated that the information-content of High-Fear students' ratings was more localized across the latent dimension than was that of Low-Fear students, and their ratings also showed less cognitive variety. The resulting measurement distortions could be captured via logistic regression over the ratings' residuals. Also, using training and validation samples (with respectively 60 and 40% of all cases), it proved possible to predict students' fear levels and their gender. We see the present findings as a first step towards implementing an online warning and detection system for signs of bullying among students.

[Ab] Resumo:BACKGROUND: The eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS) has been widely adopted by researchers to understand how eHealth literacy can be put into context. eHealth researchers need to know how to promote positive health behavior changes across college students, given the importance of the Internet to acquire and use health information. The American College Health Association identified a set of key health issues that affect college students today. By understanding how eHEALS might be related to college students' maintenance of their health and their use of online health resources, researchers will be provided with a better understanding of eHealth literacy and its pragmatic implications for health campaigns and future interventions. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to examine what eHEALS reveals about college student health behaviors identified by the American College Health Association. To understand college student current health maintenance and their intentions to maintain their health and use online resources, the theory of planned behavior was used as the theoretical framework for the study. METHODS: Data were collected via a survey of 422 college students that included the eHEALS measure and questions about health issues based on the recommendations of the American College Health Association. These questions asked about college student current health, subsequent use of online health resources, and their intention to maintain their health and make use of such resources in the future. RESULTS: eHEALS was positively and significantly associated with all 8 areas of health issues identified by the American College Health Association for college student current maintenance of health and use of online health resources and for future intention of health maintenance and use of online resources. Key issues that emerged with eHealth literacy were maintaining safe sex practices and seeking out related information, seeking out information on an exercise regime, information on vaccinations, and maintaining a balanced diet. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest several areas that may be targeted for future health campaigns toward college students. In addition, eHEALS was found to be a useful instrument for college students in the United States. Lastly, these results point to a need to deliver targeted information to college students, particularly since eHEALS captures literacy based on positively phrased items.

[Ab] Resumo:PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to construct a hypothetical structural model which explains premenstrual coping in university students and to test the fitness with collected data. METHODS: Participants were 206 unmarried women university students from 3 universities in A and B cities. Data were collected from March 29 until April 30, 2016 using self-report structured questionnaires and were analyzed using IBM SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 18.0. RESULTS: Physiological factor was identified as a significant predictor of premenstrual syndrome (t=6.45, p<.001). This model explained 22.1% of the variance in premenstrual syndrome. Psychological factors (t=-2.49, p=.013) and premenstrual syndrome (t=8.17, p<.001) were identified as significant predictors of premenstrual coping. Also this model explained 30.9% of the variance in premenstrual coping in university students. A physiological factors directly influenced premenstrual syndrome (ß=.41, p=.012). Premenstrual syndrome (ß=.55, p=.005) and physiological factor (ß=.23, p=.015) had significant total effects on premenstrual coping. Physiological factor did not have a direct influence on premenstrual coping, but indirectly affected it (ß=.22, p=.007). Psychological factors did not have an indirect or total effect on premenstrual coping, but directly affected it (ß=-.17, p=.036). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that strategies to control physiological factors such as menstrual pain should be helpful to improve premenstrual syndrome symptoms. When developing a program to improve premenstrual coping ability and quality of menstrual related health, it is important to consider psychological factors including perceived stress and menstrual attitude and premenstrual syndrome.
