[Ab] Resumo:The Republic of Korea declared measles elimination in 2006. However, a measles outbreak occurred in 2013. This study aimed to identify the epidemiological characteristics of the sources of infection and the pattern of measles transmission in 2013 in South Korea. We utilized surveillance data, epidemiological data, immunization registry data, and genetic information. We describe the epidemiological characteristics of all measles case patients (sex, age distribution, vaccination status, sources of infection) as well as details of the outbreak (the pattern of transmission, duration, mean age of patients, and generation time). In 2013, a total of 107 measles cases were notified. Most patients were infants (43.0%) and unvaccinated individuals (60.7%). We identified 4 imported and 103 import-related cases. A total of 105 cases were related to four outbreaks that occurred in Gyeongnam, northern Gyeonggi, southern Gyeonggi, and Seoul. The predominant circulating genotype was B3 type, which was identified in the Gyeongnam, northern Gyeonggi, and southern Gyeonggi outbreaks. The B3 type had not been in circulation in South Korea in the previous 3 years; virologic evidence suggests that these outbreaks were import-related. Most measles cases in South Korea have been associated with imported measles virus. Although Korea has maintained a high level of herd immunity, clustering of susceptible people can cause such measles outbreaks.

[Ab] Resumo:We investigated the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in community-dwelling diabetics. We analyzed data from 22,134 people with diabetes aged ≥19 years at the time of the nationwide 2015 Korean Community Health Survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between SES and screening for DR and DN both before and after adjustment for health behaviors, comorbidities, and educational level. Of all diabetic subjects, 33.9% and 38.1% underwent DR and DN screening, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, the extent of the DR and DN screening trended significantly lower as the educational level fell. Monthly household income was positively associated with DR screening, but a lower odds ratio (OR) for DN screening was evident only when the lowest and highest income groups were compared. Compared with managers/professionals, agricultural/forestry/fishery workers (OR 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.69-0.96) and mechanical/manual laborers (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.71-0.97) had lower ORs for DN screening. Residents in rural (compared with urban) areas and widows/widowers (compared with members of couples) were significantly less likely to undergo screening for DR and DN. Similar findings were obtained when the analysis was limited to those who had been educated about diabetes. In conclusion, socioeconomic inequalities were evident in terms of screening for DR and DN in community-dwelling Korean diabetics, regardless of whether they had reported receiving diabetes education. Tailored public health policies (and societal attention) are required to aid the socioeconomically disadvantaged.

[Ab] Resumo:Ocular setariases of cattle were reported but those of equine hosts have never been reported in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We found motile worms in the aqueous humor of 15 horses (Equus spp.) from 12 localities in southern parts of Korea between January 2004 and November 2017. After the affected animals were properly restrained under sedation and local anesthesia, 10 ml disposable syringe with a 16-gauge needle was inserted into the anterior chamber of the affected eye to successfully remove the parasites. The male worm that was found in 7 of the cases showed a pair of lateral appendages near the posterior terminal end of the body. The papillar arrangement was 3 pairs of precloacal, a pair of adcloacal, and 3 pairs of postcloacal papillae, plus a central papilla just in front of the cloaca. The female worms found in the eyes of 8 horses were characterized by the tapering posterior terminal end of the body with a smooth knob. Worms were all identified as Setaria digitata (von Linstow, 1906) by the morphologic characteristics using light and electron microscopic observations. This is the first blindness cases of 15 horses infected with S. digitata (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Korea.

[Ab] Resumo:Biliary ascariasis is still the leading cause of surgical complication of ascariasis, though its incidence has been dramatically reduced. Herein, we report a case of biliary ascariasis for the purpose of enhancing awareness of parasitic infections as a possible cause. A 72-year-old male visited the emergency room of Dankook University Hospital on 12 July 2015, complaining of right-upper-quadrant pain. By endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a tubular filling defect in the right hepatic duct was detected. The defect was endoscopically removed and diagnosed as an adult female of Ascaris lumbricoides worm, of 30 cm length. Upon removal of the worm, the pain subsided, and the patient was discharged without any complication. When treating cases of biliary colic, physicians should not neglect biliary ascariasis as the possible cause.

[Ab] Resumo:PURPOSE: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis. Both the etiology of KD and the erythema of Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) injection sites observed in the disease are poorly understood. We investigated the association between KD and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in two candidate genes: inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate 3-kinase (ITPKC), a well-studied KD-associated gene, and solute carrier 11a1 (SLC11A1), which is associated with the hypersensitive reaction to the BCG strain in Koreans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Associations between KD and SNPs in two genes were evaluated. Potential associations between BCG injection site erythema and SNPs in two genes were also evaluated. Gene-gene interactions between ITPKC and SLC11A1 in KD and BCG injection site erythema were also analyzed. RESULTS: Three tagging SNPs in ITPKC and five tagging SNPs in SLC11A1 were genotyped in 299 KD patients and 210 control children. SNP rs28493229 in ITPKC was associated with KD and coronary artery complications. SNP rs77624405 in SLC11A1 was associated with KD. Comparisons of KD patients with and without BCG injection site erythema revealed that SNP rs17235409 in SLC11A1 was associated with erythema; no erythema-associated SNPs in ITPKC were identified. Interactions between ITPKC rs28493229_GG and SLC11A1 rs17235409_GA and between ITPKC rs10420685_GG and SLC11A1 rs17235409_AA were strongly associated with BCG injection site erythema. CONCLUSION: This study identified several important polymorphisms in the ITPKC and SLC11A1 genes in Koreans. The genetic variants identified in this study affected KD and erythema of BCG injection sites independently and through gene-gene interactions. Also, the effects of the polymorphisms were age-dependent.

[Ab] Resumo:This study identified factors associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in people with metabolic syndrome in South Korea. The sample consisted of 1,207 subjects with metabolic syndrome from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2014. High-risk alcohol consumption, smoking, aerobic physical activity, leisure physical activity, excessive carbohydrate intake, and fat intake were measured. A secondary data analysis was performed using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Gender was associated with all unhealthy behaviors. The number of metabolic syndrome components, a poor perceived health status, and attempts to control weight were associated with physical inactivity. Those findings may be helpful to develop a tailored lifestyle modification programs for people with metabolic syndrome.

[Ab] Resumo:A Gram-negative, motile by gliding, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated S7-3-19 , was isolated from apple orchard soil in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Republic of Korea, and characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that strain S7-3-19 belonged to the family Cytophagaceae and was most closely related to Spirosoma linguale DSM 74 (96.38 %), Spirosoma fluviale MSd3 (96.38 %), Spirosoma pulveris JSH5-14 (96.35 %) and Spirosoma radiotolerans DG5A (96.24 %). Chemotaxonomic characteristics supported the classification of strain S7-3-19 within the genus Spirosoma. Summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c; 46.7 %) and C16 : 1ω5c (23.8 %) were the major fatty acids. Phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, an unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified lipids were the major polar lipids. Menaquinone with seven isoprene units was the predominant respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain S7-3-19 was 48.6 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic properties, genotypic distinctiveness and chemotaxonomic features, strain S7-3-19 represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosomahorti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S7-3-19 (=KCTC 52728 =JCM 32131 ).

[Ab] Resumo:A Gram-stain-variable, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile and spore-forming bacterial strain, designated CJ11 , was isolated from a tidal flat sediment sample from Ganghwa-do, Republic of Korea. Strain CJ11 grew optimally on R2A at 30 °C and pH 7.0. Sequencing results of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that strain CJ11 possesses two copies of the 16S rRNA gene varying at five nucleotide positions. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CJ11 belonged to the genus Paenibacillus within the family Paenibacillaceae and was most closely related to Paenibacillus lacus KCTC 33691 (99.36-99.15 % similarity). DNA-DNA relatedness levels of strain CJ11 was 41.7 % (reciprocal, 57.8 %) to P. lacus KCTC 33691 . The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 51.0 mol%. Strain CJ11 contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids, an unidentified glycolipid and several unidentified lipids. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic study, strain CJ11 represents a novel species in the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillustranslucens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CJ11 (=KACC 19304 =JCM 32080 ).

[Ab] Resumo:A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile and short-rod-shaped actinobacterium, designated THG-T121 , was isolated from forest soil. Growth occurred at 10-40 °C (optimum 28-30 °C), at pH 6-8 (optimum 7) and at 0-4 % NaCl (optimum 1 %). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of strain THG-T121 were identified as Actinotalea ferrariae KCTC 29134 (97.9 %), Actinotalea fermentans KCTC 3251 (97.3 %), Cellulomonas carbonis KCTC 19824 (97.2 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities among strain THG-T121 and other recognized species were lower than 97.0 %. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two phosphatidylinositol mannosides, one unidentified phospholipid, three unidentified glycolipids and one unidentified lipid. The isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone (MK-10(H4)). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 1 A, C16 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. The whole-cell sugars of strain THG-T121 were rhamnose, ribose, mannose and glucose. The peptidoglycan type of strain THG-T121 is A4ß, containing l-Orn-D-Ser-L-Asp. The DNA G+C content of strain THG-T121 was 72.4 mol%. DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain THG-T121 and A. ferrariae KCTC 29134 , A. fermentans KCTC 3251 and C. carbonis KCTC 19824 were 30.2 % (27.3 %, reciprocal analysis), 28.4 %, (17.3 %) and 16.9 %, (9.3 %), respectively. On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis, chemotaxonomic data, physiological characteristics and DNA-DNA hybridization data, strain THG-T121 represents a novel species of the genus Actinotalea, for which the name Actinotaleasolisilvae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is THG-T121 (=KACC 19191 =CGMCC 4.7389 ).

[Ab] Resumo:Strain M1-21 is a Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and short-rod-shaped bacterium, motile by means of a single polar flagellum; it was isolated from freshwater sediment in Korea. It grew at 10-40 °C (optimum 25 °C), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0-0.75 % (w/v) NaCl (optimal growth occurred in the absence of NaCl) on R2A agar, and it accumulated poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate granules inside the cells. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain M1-21 showed highest sequence similarity with Uliginosibacterium gangwonense (94.7 %) and Uliginosibacterium paludis (94.4 %). Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain M1-21 belongs to the genus Uliginosibacterium. The DNA G+C content of strain M1-21 was 61.9 mol%. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total) were C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. Strain M1-21 showed distinct phenotypic characteristics that differentiated it from species of the genus Uliginosibacterium. Based on these results, strain M1-21 represents a novel species of the genus Uliginosibacterium, for which the name Uliginosibacterium sediminicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M1-21 (=KACC 19271 =JCM 32000 ).
