[Ab] Resumo:A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated as P308H10 , was isolated from surface sediment of the Southern Indian Ocean. Growth occurred at 4-36 °C (optimum 20-25 °C), pH 6.0-8.5 (optimum 7.5-8.0) and in the presence of 1-8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2-3 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain P308H10 lies within the clade of members of the genus Arenibacter and is closely related to Arenibacterhampyeongensis HP12 (98.0 %), Arenibacterechinorum KMM 6032 (98.4 %), Arenibacterpalladensis LMG 21972 (97.9 %), Arenibactertroitsensis KMM 3674 (97.9 %) and 'Arenibacter algicola' TG409 (98.1 %). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain P308H10 and the five reference strains were 85.9-80.6 % and 30.2-23.6 %, respectively. The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain P308H10 were summed feature 3, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C15 : 0. The major polar lipids comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, five unidentified aminolipids and four unidentified lipids. The only respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The genomic DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data presented, strain P308H10 represents a novel species of the genus Arenibacter, for which the name Arenibacter catalasegens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is P308H10 (=GDMCC 1.1230 =KCTC 52983 ). An emended description of the genus Arenibacter is also proposed.

[Ab] Resumo:Understanding the drivers of variability in the composition of fish assemblages across the Indo-Pacific region is crucial to support coral reef ecosystem resilience. Whilst numerous relationships and feedback mechanisms between the functional roles of coral reef fishes and reef benthic composition have been investigated, certain key groups, such as the herbivores, are widely suggested to maintain reefs in a coral-dominated state. Examining links between fishes and reef benthos is complicated by the interactions between natural processes, disturbance events and anthropogenic impacts, particularly fishing pressure. This study examined fish assemblages and associated benthic variables across five atolls within the Chagos Archipelago, where fishing pressure is largely absent, to better understand these relationships. We found high variability in fish assemblages among atolls and sites across the archipelago, especially for key groups such as a suite of grazer-detritivore surgeonfish, and the parrotfishes which varied in density over 40-fold between sites. Differences in fish assemblages were significantly associated with variable levels of both live and recently dead coral cover and rugosity. We suggest these results reflect differing coral recovery trajectories following coral bleaching events and a strong influence of 'bottom-up' control mechanisms on fish assemblages. Species level analyses revealed that Scarus niger, Acanthurus nigrofuscus and Chlorurus strongylocephalos were key species driving differences in fish assemblage structure. Clarifying the trophic roles of herbivorous and detritivorous reef fishes will require species-level studies, which also examine feeding behaviour, to fully understand their contribution in maintaining reef resilience to climate change and fishing impacts.

[Ab] Resumo:Although weekly consumption of fish is recommended, the presence of contaminants in seafood has raised many concerns regarding the benefits of fish intake. In the present study microplastics (MPs) and metals' concentration in muscles of both benthic and pelagic fish species from northeast of Persian Gulf were investigated and the risk/benefit of their consumption was assessed. The results demonstrated that MPs and Hg in all species and Se in benthic species increase with size, while relationship between other metals, and fish size is not consistent. Consumption of a meal ration of 300 and < 100 g/week for adults and children, respectively, is recommended since it would provide the required essential elements with no human health risk. On the other hand, the estimated intake of MPs from fish muscles revealed that the mean intake of MPs for P. indicus, E. coioides, A. djedaba, and S. jello consumption is 555, 240, 233, and 169 items/300 g-week, respectively. Moreover, the relationship between MPs and metals in fish muscles were positive for A. djedaba, and negative for E. coioides. Considering the chemical toxicity of MPs and metals, and their good linear relationships in some species, consumption of high doses of the studied fish may pose a health threat to the consumers.

[Ab] Resumo:The Mediterranean Sea is an invasion hotspot, with non-indigenous species suspected to be a major driver behind community changes. We used size spectra, a reliable index of food web structure, to examine how the influx of Red Sea fishes into the Mediterranean Sea has impacted the indigenous species community. This is the first attempt to use changes in the size spectra to reveal the effect of biological invasions. We used data from trawl catches along Israel's shoreline spanning 20 years to estimate changes in the community size spectra of both indigenous and non-indigenous species. We found that the relative biomass of non-indigenous species increased over the 20 years, especially for small and large species, leading to a convergence with the indigenous species size spectra. Hence, the biomass of indigenous and non-indigenous species has become identical for all size classes, suggesting similar energetic constraints and sensitivities to fishing. However, over this time period the size spectrum of indigenous species has remained remarkably constant. This suggests that the wide-scale invasion of non-indigenous species into the Mediterranean may have had little impact on the community structure of indigenous species.

[Ab] Resumo:INTRODUCTION: We investigated in a prospective, observational trial the feasibility of using the Eustachian tube function test (ETFT) to measure the effect of repetitive pressure exposure during open seawater dives on Eustachian tube function. METHODS: The study included 28 adult divers during six consecutive days of diving in the Red Sea. Participants underwent otoscopy and ETFT before the first dive, between each dive and after the last dive. ETFT included regular tympanometry (R-tymp), tympanometry after Valsalva (V-tymp) and after swallowing (S-tymp). The R-tymp was obtained as 'baseline' peak pressure. After a Valsalva, the peak pressure should shift (positively), revealing a positive shift of the tympanic membrane. This pressure shift is defined here as R-V . The changes in compliance and peak pressure were recorded and correlated with otoscopic findings and diving experience. Middle ear barotrauma was scored using the Edmonds modified TEED scale. RESULTS: The 28 participants performed 437 dives. Positive shift of pressure in the middle ear was evident with significant changes from day one to day three (P < 0.0001). Divers with barotrauma showed significantly lower values of R-tymp peak pressure and significantly higher negative R-V , compared to divers with normal otoscopic findings (P < 0.05). Diving experience significantly correlated with R-tymp peak pressure and prevalence of middle ear barotrauma. CONCLUSION: Significant changes in middle ear pressure and pressure equalization from repeated pressure exposure in saltwater were seen using ETFT. Repetitive, multi-day diving led to significantly decreased compliance and increased R-tymp peak pressure (overpressure) in the middle ear. Most profound changes were observed in less and intermediate experienced divers.

[Ab] Resumo:With globalization the Western honey bee has become a nearly cosmopolitan species, but it was originally restricted to the Old World. This renowned model of biodiversity has diverged into five evolutionary lineages and several geographic "subspecies." If Apis mellifera unicolor is indubitably an African subspecies endemic to Madagascar, its relationship with honey bees from three archipelagos in the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) hotspot of biodiversity is misunderstood. We compared recent mtDNA diversity data to an original characterization of the nuclear diversity from honey bees in the Mascarenes and Comoros archipelagos, using 14 microsatellites, but also additional mtDNA tRNALeu-cox2 analysis. Our sampling offers the most comprehensive dataset for the SWIO populations with a total of 3,270 colonies from 10 islands compared with 855 samples from Madagascar, 113 from Africa, and 138 from Europe. Comprehensive mitochondrial screening confirmed that honey bees from La Réunion, Mauritius, and Comoros archipelagos are mainly of African origin (88.1% out of 2,746 colonies) and that coexistence with European lineages occurs only in the Mascarenes. PCA, Bayesian, and genetic differentiation analysis showed that African colonies are not significantly distinct on each island, but have diversified among islands and archipelagos. FST levels progressively decreased in significance from European and African continental populations, to SWIO insular and continental populations, and finally among islands from the same archipelago. Among African populations, Madagascar shared a nuclear background with and was most closely related to SWIO island populations (except Rodrigues). Only Mauritius Island presented clear cytoplasmic disequilibrium and genetic structure characteristic of an admixed population undergoing hybridization, in this case, between A. m. unicolor and A. m. ligustica, A. m. carnica and A. m. mellifera-like individuals. Finally, global genetic clustering analysis helped to better depict the colonization and introduction pattern of honey bee populations in these archipelagos.

[Ab] Resumo:Melioidosis is a disease caused by bacteria called B. pseudomallei. Infections can develop after contact with standing water. This disease can reach all the organs and especially the lungs. It is associated with a high mortality rate (up to 50%). Melioidosis is endemic in northern Australia and in Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, B. pseudomallei may be endemic in the Indian Ocean region and in Madagascar in particular, so clinicians and microbiologists should consider acute melioidosis as a differential diagnosis in the Indian Ocean region, in particular from Madagascar.

[Ab] Resumo:The photochemical fate of 16 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) found in the environment has been studied under controlled laboratory conditions applying a sunlight simulator. Aqueous samples containing PPCPs at environmentally relevant concentrations were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) after irradiation. The exposed extracts were subsequently analysed by liquid chromatography combined with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) for studying the kinetics of photolytic transformations. Almost all exposed PPCPs appeared to react with a half-life time (τ ) of less than 30 min. For ranitidine, sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac, warfarin, sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin, τ was found to be even less than 5 min. The structures of major photolysis products were determined using quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QToF) and spectroscopic data reported in the literature. For diclofenac, the transformation products carbazol-1-yl-acidic acid and 8-chloro-9H-carbazol-1-yl-acetic acid were identified based on the mass/charge ratio of protonated ions and their fragmentation pattern in negative electrospray ionization (ESI -QTOF). Irradiation of carbamazepine resulted in three known products: acridine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, and 10,11-dihydro-10,11-dihydroxy-carbamazepine, whereas acetaminophen was photolytically transformed to 1-(2-amino-5 hydroxyphenyl) ethenone. These photochemical products were subsequently identified in seawater or fish samples collected at sites exposed to wastewater effluents on the Saudi Arabian coast of the Red Sea.

[Ab] Resumo:A novel exopolysaccharide-producing strain, designated as 5.12 , was isolated from a sediment sample from the Southwest Indian Ridge, Indian Ocean. The strain was Gram-stain-negative, motile, strictly aerobic, and oxidase- and catalase-positive. It grew optimally at 35 °C, at pH 6.0 and in the presence of 3.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Its major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c were the major cellular fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 46.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis suggested that strain 5.12 is a member of the genus Alteromonas. Strain 5.12 exhibited close 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Alteromonas lipolytica JW12 (96.1 %), Alteromonas hispanica F-32 (95.9 %), Alteromonas confluentis DSSK2-12 (95.9 %), Alteromonas litorea TF-22 (95.6 %) and Alteromonas mediterranea DE (95.5 %). Strain 5.12 contained phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. Owing to significant differences in the 16S rRNA gene sequences, as well as the phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the novel isolate described here merits classification as a representative of a novel species of the genus Alteromonas, for which the name Alteromonas pelagimontana sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of this species is 5.12 (LMG 29661 = MCC 3250 ).

[Ab] Resumo:A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic bacterium designated BW11-2T was isolated from marine sediment of the south-west Indian Ocean. Cells of BW11-2T were rod-shaped, endospore-forming, 0.3-0.5 µm wide, 1.8-2.0 µm long, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The isolate was capable of growing at 15-45 °C (optimum 30 °C), pH 5-9 (optimum 7) and with 0.5-10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3 %). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, BW11-2T was shown to belong to the family Bacillaceae within the phylum Firmicutes and formed a distinct lineage, showing the highest sequence similarities to closely related genera: Bacillus(93.9-94.7 %), Gracilibacillus (93.3-93.7 %), Amphibacillus (93.5 %), Virgibacillus (92.9-93.1 %) and Anaerobacillus(92.6-93.0 %). BW11-2T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the species Bacillus oleronius (94.7 %). The predominant fatty acids (>10 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The major quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified aminolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BW11-2T was 43.3 mol%. On the basis of the morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics as well as genotypic data, strain BW11-2T represents a novel genus and species in the family Bacillaceae, for which the name Swionibacillus sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Strain BW11-2T (=CICC 24196T=JCM 31924T) is the type strain.
