Abstract: |
The increasing penetration of internet access in the Caribbean renders the World Wide Web an increasingly important medium of communication in the region. Some studies (for example, Miller and Slater 2001; Fraser and Henry 2007) have examined the spread of Internet technologies and their impact in the Caribbean. Others (for example, DeBruin 2006; Voisin et al. 2006) have examined health communication strategies to combat HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. There is, however, little study of Web-based strategies to inform, educate, and motivate behavior change regarding HIV/AIDS in the region. The present study uses Web content analysis and interviews to examine the strategic use of this medium by Caribbean health communicators in HIV/AIDS prevention. The authors find varying Web-strategies by advocacy organizations in the region and continuing reservations about the medium among practitioners. Additionally, sites studied feature a wide range of content and are generally quite demanding in terms of readability.
