Título: Some common eye diseases in British Guiana
Fonte: West Indian med. j;8(4):225-8, Dec. 1959.
Idioma: En.
Resumo: In this paper we attempt to give a "bird's eye view" of some common eye diseases in British Guiana, and some of their peculiarities. The greatest peculiarities are seen in senile and pre-senile cataracts which begin centrally. There is a racial predilection of glaucoma and optic atrophy due to avitaminosis of the B group and this predilection is confined to diseases in the negro or mixed negro races. (AU)

Título: Childhood blindness in Jamaica
Fonte: Br J Ophthalmol;72(1):65-7, Jan. 1988.
Idioma: En.
Resumo: Examinations were performed on the 108 blind Jamaican children (VA less than 6/60 in the better eye) in residential care. The congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) was the leading preventable cause of childhood blindness, accounting for 22 percent of children examined. Improvement of the surgical procedures constitute recent attempts to combat childhood blindness. (AU)

Título: The potential use of cannabis sativa in ophthalmology
Fonte: West Indian med. j;26(2):66-70, June 1977.
Idioma: En.
Resumo: Forty patients with glaucoma and forty with normal intraocular tension were examined for changes in intraocular pressure before and after smoking tobacco and cannabis cigarettes. Smoking of cannabis cigarettes decreased the intraocular pressure in glaucoma. Smoking of tobacco cigarettes produced an initial rise in pressure followed by a fall. There was no change in the patients with normal intraocular tension (AU)

Título: The treatment of glaucoma using a non-psychoactive preparation of cannabis sativa
Fonte: West Indian med. j;27(1):16-25, Mar. 1978.
Idioma: En.
Resumo: A non-psychotropic, ophthalmic preparation from cannabis sativa produced a significant fall in intraocular pressure both in the dog and in glaucoma patients. The preparation is non-toxic and compared favourably with pilocarpine in the dog. It is concluded, from our observations, that cannabis sativa contains an active principle which is non-psychotic and which has a significant effect in lowering the intraocular pressure (AU)

Título: Primary glaucoma: pathogenesis and Jamaican aspects
Fonte: West Indian med. j;1(2):178-94, Apr. 1952.
Idioma: En.
Resumo: The incidence of primary glaucoma in Jamaica has been compared with its reported incidence in other countries. The physiology of the intra-ocular pressure and the dynamics of the aqueous humour have been described, with emphasis on those aspects pertinent to the causation of glaucoma. A review of the pathology of the subject and a resume of gonioscopic work has been given. The ocurrent theories of the two schools of thought on the subject have been discussed, and reasons suggested for the possibly high incidence of the disease in tropical climates. Attention has been drawn to a few prevalent misconceptions regarding the clinical manifestations of glaucoma, which are responsible for late diagnosis (AU)
