Título: Diabetes mellitus juvenil: a experiência de familiares de adolescentes e pré-adolescentes / Juvenile diabetes: the family's experience with diabetic adolescents and pre-adolescents.
Fonte: Ciênc. saúde coletiva;14(3):947-960, maio-jun. 2009. tab.
Resumo: This study aimed at investigating the experience of taking care of adolescents and pre-adolescents with type 1 diabetes from the standpoint of their family members. A phenomenological approach, i.e. a type of qualitative analysis aimed at understanding the meaning of life experiences, was used. Ten parents (9 mothers and 1 father) were interviewed at a teaching hospital in the interior of São Paulo state. The experience of taking care of a child with diabetes emerged from the converging points reported under 3 main themes: the universe of the disease; personal relationships; reflections on the experience. The participants described their difficulties and the strategies they use for keeping the family together besides providing support to the children. They believe they have to accept and face the challenges, besides motivating their children in order to ensure their safety and quality of life. The data obtained show the need for professional support as well as for a space for discussing themes of interest, both for the children with diabetes and for their families.(AU).

Título: Anxiety and depression in parents of a Brazilian non-clinical sample of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) students.
Fonte: Braz. j. med. biol. res;42(5):465-469, May 2009. tab.
Resumo: Higher prevalence rates of anxiety and depression have been reported in parents of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The interaction between the burden of ADHD in offspring, a higher prevalence rate of this highly inherited disorder in parents, and comorbidities may explain this finding. Our objective was to investigate levels of ADHD, anxious and depressive symptomatology, and their relationship in parents of ADHD children from a non-clinical sample using a dimensional approach. The sample included 396 students enrolled in all eight grades of a public school who were screened for ADHD using the SNAP IV rating scale. Positive cases were confirmed through a semi-structured interview. Parents of all 26 ADHD students and 31 paired controls were enrolled. A sample of 36 parents of ADHD children (21 mothers, 15 fathers) and 30 parents of control children (18 mothers, 12 fathers) completed the Adult Self Report Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory in order to investigate anxious and depressive symptomatology. Probands' mothers presented a higher level of ADHD symptomatology (with only inattention being a significant cluster). Again, mothers of ADHD children presented higher depressive and anxiety levels; however, these did not correlate with their own ADHD symptomatology. Only trait-anxiety levels were higher in ADHD mothers. Our findings suggest that: 1) anxious and depressive symptoms might be more prevalent in mothers of ADHD students; 2) anxious and depressive symptomatology might be independent of impairment associated with ADHD symptoms; 3) anxious and depressive symptoms are independent of the presence of ADHD.(AU).

Título: Adolescer com deficiência mental: a ótica dos pais / Being adolescent with mental disability: the point of view of the parents
Fonte: Ciênc. saúde coletiva;14(1):79-87, jan.-fev. 2009.
The purpose of this paper was to understand the meaning adolescence has for parents of adolescents with mental disability. The methodology used was the narrative analysis according to the guidelines of Thompson (1998) and Byron-Good (1996). Although the parents identified some typical characteristics of adolescence in their children, not always they did in fact consider them adolescents due to their lack of autonomy. Quite often the parents did not meet the family life education needs of their disabled children helping them to become more independent. The lack of information about how to act in face of the behavioral changes involved in adolescence was a source of resentment. In view of the importance of greater autonomy, actions should be developed to help these adolescents recognize this stage of human development and to live this period the best way possible. When- mentally disabled adolescents are given the opportunity to improve their competences and abilities and to expand their " horizon" , they will be able to become more autonomous and able to live all stages of life in a satisfactory way.(AU).

Título: Factores de riesgo familiares asociados a la conducta suicida en adolescentes con trastorno depresivo. / [Familial risk factors for suicide among adolescents with depression].
Fonte: Rev. md. Chile;137(2):226-33, 2009 Feb. .
Resumo: BACKGROUND: Suicide is the second or third cause of death among Chilean teenagers aged 15 to 19 years. AIM: To evaluate familial risk factors associated to suicidal attempt in adolescents with a depressive disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty two teenagers with depression, aged between 13 and 18 years, receiving psychological treatment in six public Mental Health Centers in Santiago and 32 fathers, mothers or tutors were evaluated. Beck's Depression Inventory and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES III, family version) were applied to adolescents. Adults were evaluated by the Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire and the FACES III parents version. RESULTS: No meaningful statistical association between adolescents suicidal attempt and family risk factors (family order, presence of family stressors and parent's mental health), was observed. However, there was a significant association between suicidal ideation of teenagers, their familiar adaptability and suicidal ideation of close relatives. CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal attempt in this group of teenagers was associated with familial adaptability and suicidal ideation by close relatives. Therefore close relatives must be integrated to the prevention programs for adolescents' suicide..

Título: Behavior and socioemotional functioning in 9-18-year-old children born after in vitro fertilization..
Fonte: Fertil Steril;92(6):1907-14, 2009 Dec. .
Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychosocial well-being of 9-18-year-old IVF children. IVF alters fetal programming, with consequences for physical functioning. This also may apply to behavior. Behavior and socioemotional functioning of children born after IVF and spontaneously from parents with former fertility problems were studied, to control for parental factors and investigate the role of IVF on the children's functioning. DESIGN: Child Behavior CheckList (CBCL) and Teacher Report Form (TRF) reports of 139 IVF and 143 control children. SETTING: VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam. SUBJECT(S): Children's age ranged from 9 to 18 years; mean age 13.60 (+/-2.12) years in IVF and 13.51 (+/-2.11) years in controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Child's behavior and socioemotional functioning reported by parents (CBCL) and teachers (TRF). RESULT(S): The CBCL and TRF mean scores were within the normal range. Scores of IVF parents versus controls were lower on the total problems scale, externalizing scale and syndrome scales thought problems, attention problems, aggressive and rule-breaking behavior. Less IVF children had scores in the borderline/clinical range on these scales. On the TRF, a tendency was found for lower scores on the externalizing scale in IVF children compared with controls. More IVF children scored in the borderline/clinical range on the syndrome scale withdrawn/depressed behavior. CONCLUSION(S): Overall, behavior, and socioemotional functioning of 9-18-year-old IVF children is normal. The reduced behavior of externalizing nature reported by the parents, and teacher ratings of more withdrawn/depressed behavior need further study..

Título: What research tells us about the intersecting streams of homelessness and foster care..
Fonte: Am J Orthopsychiatry;79(3):319-25, 2009 Jul. .
Resumo: This paper reviews mounting evidence linking foster care and homelessness and considers new approaches for intervention. Although there is no causal evidence that family homelessness leads to foster care or vice versa, the association no longer originates solely from samples of homeless people, but also from samples of people with childhood histories of foster care. Many programs work with families, children or youth based on their current living situations and limits imposed by funders. This results in discontinued services when the living situations change. Given the strong and consistent associations between homelessness and foster care, a better approach is to design programs that work with transient families regardless of their living situation. Parenting is key. Whether the parents are living with their children in homeless circumstances or are formerly homeless parents working to reunify with their children, coordinated, comprehensive, trauma-informed and family focused programs are needed to support parenting and family stability..

Título: Parent-adolescent violence and later behavioral health problems among homeless and housed youth..
Fonte: Am J Orthopsychiatry;79(3):305-18, 2009 Jul. .
Resumo: Parent-adolescent violence (i.e., violence between parents and adolescents) is an important pathway to homelessness and predicts poor behavioral health outcomes among youth. However, few studies have examined links between parent violence and outcomes among youth who are homeless. Existing research has also tended to ignore adolescent violence toward parents, despite evidence that mutual violence is common. The current study examines prospective links of parent-adolescent violence to outcomes among youth who were homeless and demographically matched youth, through two complementary substudies: (a) an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of items measuring parent and adolescent violence combined in the same analysis; and (b) an examination of predictive relationships between the factors identified in the EFA and behavioral health problems, including mental health and alcohol abuse problems. Predictive relationships were examined in the overall sample and by gender, ethnic, and housing status subgroups. Results of the EFA suggested that parent-adolescent violence includes intraindividual (i.e., separate parent and adolescent) physical components and a shared psychological component. Each of these components contributed uniquely to predicting later youth behavioral health. Implications for research and practice with youth who are homeless are discussed..

Título: Developing a coordinated school health approach to child obesity prevention in rural Appalachia: results of focus groups with teachers, parents, and students..
Fonte: Rural Remote Health;9(4):1157, 2009 Oct-Dec. .
Resumo: INTRODUCTION: High prevalence rates of obesity, particularly among those residing in US rural areas, and associated physical and psychosocial health consequences, direct attention to the need for effective prevention programs. The current study describes an initial step in developing a school-based obesity prevention program in rural Appalachia, USA. The program, modeled on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Coordinated School Health (CSH) Program, includes a community-based participatory research approach to addressing the health needs specific to this region. METHODS: Focus groups with teachers, parents, and 4th grade students were used to understand perceptions and school policy related to nutrition, physical activity, and the role of the school in obesity prevention. RESULTS: Results revealed that these community stakeholders were concerned about the problem of child obesity and supported the idea of their school doing more to improve the diet and physical activity of its students. Specifically, all groups thought that foods and drinks consumed by students at school should be healthier and that they should have more opportunities for physical activity. However, they cited limitations of the school environment, academic pressures, and lack of parental support as potential barriers to making such changes. Parents were most concerned that their children were not getting enough to eat and they and the teachers were not in favor of BMI screening at the school. Parents were in favor of increasing physical activity during school and thought that parent volunteers should help students select foods in the cafeteria. Students cited examples of how diet and physical activity affect their health and school performance, and thought that they should have more physical education time and recess. CONCLUSIONS: The data collected in the current study contributed to the limited knowledge base regarding rural populations as well as identified strengths and potential barriers to assist with the development of a pilot program based on the CSH model, Winning with Wellness..
